Blizzard has introduced a Temporary Economy Hold in the beta for World of Warcraft: Forever to stop suspected real-money-trading gold from moving through the game. The hold can affect both the account selling illicit gold and the account receiving it, temporarily disabling major economy features while Blizzard investigates.

What a Temporary Economy Hold does

A Temporary Economy Hold is an account restriction triggered when Blizzard detects activity it believes may involve real-money trading (RMT)—the buying or selling of in-game gold for money outside the game’s normal systems.

While the hold is active, the account cannot use several channels through which gold and items normally circulate:

  • Player-to-player trade
  • In-game mail
  • Guild banks
  • The Auction House

Blizzard’s stated objective is to freeze suspicious funds before they are transferred onward or mixed into the wider economy. Community manager Kaivax described the goal as to “aggressively shut down the flow of suspicious gold before it has been transferred or put into circulation into the economy, while providing us the time needed to investigate more thoroughly.”

Who can be restricted?

The system is not limited to suspected sellers. An account that receives illicit proceeds can also be placed on hold. That means a player may lose access to trading, mail, guild-bank and Auction House functions even if Blizzard’s investigation is focused on the source of the gold rather than the recipient’s own sales activity.

Blizzard says players who are simply playing normally are unlikely to see the restriction. However, the company also acknowledges that the new detection system can produce false positives while it is being tuned.

What happens during the investigation?

  1. Detection: Blizzard identifies activity that appears consistent with suspicious gold movement or another RMT-related pattern.
  2. Immediate economy restriction: The account’s trade, mail, guild-bank and Auction House functions are limited by the Temporary Economy Hold.
  3. Review: Blizzard investigates the activity while preventing the potentially suspicious gold from circulating further.
  4. Resolution: If the activity is determined to be legitimate, Blizzard says the hold is removed automatically. If the investigation confirms RMT, the account may receive additional account action.

The announcement does not establish a guaranteed duration for an individual hold. It also does not publish a false-positive rate or a measured success rate, so players should not assume that every case will be resolved within a particular number of hours or days.

Does a hold permanently mark the account?

Not by itself. Blizzard says that merely receiving a Temporary Economy Hold creates no permanent strike against the account. A lasting account consequence can follow only if the later investigation proves the activity was RMT-motivated.

This distinction separates an investigative restriction from a final enforcement decision. The hold is designed to preserve the integrity of the economy while Blizzard examines the evidence; it is not presented as an automatic permanent ban or permanent warning.

Can Blizzard restrict Auction House or mail access for buying gold?

Yes. If Blizzard suspects an account of buying illicit gold—or of receiving gold connected to an RMT transaction—it can restrict Auction House access along with trade, mail and guild-bank functions during the investigation. The policy therefore affects the practical ways a player can move currency and items, not just the ability to list or purchase an Auction House item.

Receiving gold does not automatically prove wrongdoing under Blizzard’s stated process. The account can be cleared and the hold removed if the triggering activity is found to be false. Nevertheless, players should understand that accepting suspicious funds can interrupt normal economic play while the transaction is reviewed.

How this differs from a conventional post-investigation ban

Blizzard’s approach intervenes before suspected gold has time to move through the economy. Its main characteristics are:

  • Discover a Lost Continent - Explore the ancient kingdoms of Pandaria and mount your defense against a newly awakened evil stirring in the continent's dark corners.
Comparison point Temporary Economy Hold
Timing Restriction can begin while suspicious activity is being investigated, before the gold circulates further.
Scope Trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House are limited.
Resolution path Automatic removal if suspicion is disproved; further account action if RMT is confirmed.
False-positive handling Blizzard says false positives may occur while the system is fine-tuned and that a hold alone leaves no permanent strike.
Deployment Initially discussed for WoW: Forever’s beta, with broader rollout dependent on the system proving successful.

The available announcement describes Blizzard’s own process but does not provide comparable measurements for other massively multiplayer online games, so claims that it is more effective than another game’s anti-RMT system would be premature.

Will the system reach retail World of Warcraft?

Blizzard says the same systems will be deployed to all versions of World of Warcraft if the approach proves successful in WoW: Forever. That is a conditional plan, not a confirmed retail launch date. The announcement does not specify which retail version would receive it first, when deployment would occur, or what performance threshold would count as success.

What players should do if a hold appears

  • Stop attempting to move the potentially affected gold through other characters, mail or guild storage; those actions could complicate the review.
  • Do not assume the restriction is permanent solely because it appeared.
  • Watch for Blizzard’s account communication and follow the official appeal or support process if the activity was legitimate.
  • Keep records of unusual transfers or trades that may help explain a legitimate transaction.

The safest way to avoid the restriction is to avoid buying or selling gold for real money and to be cautious about accepting unexplained large transfers from other players.
