Blizzard has announced a Classic-rooted continuation of World of Warcraft built around original Azeroth, leveling and social play, with more than a thousand new quests, nine dungeons, two raids and a battleground. Developers describe a level-60 cap and horizontal progression, but the specific claim that the project began with an internal pitch for four dungeons—and the story of how its scope grew—cannot be firmly attributed from the available published accounts.
What is World of Warcraft: Forever?
Blizzard describes World of Warcraft: Forever as a continuing exploration of original Azeroth informed by lessons from WoW Classic and Season of Discovery. Its four stated design pillars are approachability and familiarity, making the world the main character, valuing the journey, and protecting social play. The company says leveling, effort, preparation, communication and cooperation should remain central to the experience. Blizzard’s official panel recap sets out those goals and the announced content.
Those are Blizzard’s aims, not independent evidence of how the finished game will play. The recap frames Forever as an expansion of the original-world experience rather than a departure from its Classic roots.

Dungeons, raids and battleground
The announced PvE and PvP content includes nine new dungeons, two raids and a battleground:
- Dungeons: Hall of Thanes; Ruins of Lordaeron; an excavation site above Whelgar’s Excavation; City of Dalaran; Blackmaw Hold; the Drowned City; Krol’dok Stronghold; Alcaz Prison; and Shaper’s Terrace.
- Raids: Hyjal Summit, with 20-player encounters, and Barrow Deeps, planned as a maximum-level 10-player challenge.
- Battleground: Darkspear Islands, described as a 15-versus-15 encounter.
These are announced features and formats in Blizzard’s recap, not independently audited counts or a guarantee that development plans cannot change.

Progression and other features
Blizzard also lists Legacy progression for alternate characters, outdoor Camping, opt-in transmog, visual presets, high-definition and standard-definition character-model options, and official gamepad support. The recap’s roadmap says global launch is planned for November 4, 2026, beta for September 17, and new raids for December 9, followed by further updates. Those dates are roadmap details announced by Blizzard and may change.
What do developers say about the design?
In a September 22, 2026 interview with Windows Central, lead game designer Tim Jones and lead software engineer Nora Valleta describe a level-60 cap and horizontal progression. The reporting says the Legacy system is intended to reward play on alternate characters, while Blizzard wants content to matter across character levels instead of concentrating exclusively on level 60.

Jones told Windows Central: “Every single one of our 27 talent trees is now viable for all content in WoW: Forever.” He also said the trees are not equal and retain different strengths and weaknesses. That is a developer’s statement of intended class viability, not proof that every build will perform identically or remain balanced at release.
Valleta describes Classic play as more social and world-focused, including exploring and physically traveling to dungeons. In a separate September 2026 interview, lead software engineer Ana Resendez and associate production director Clayton Stone told But Why Tho? that the team’s initial approach was comparatively conservative after player feedback on Season of Discovery. They said they want encounters to feel challenging while staying grounded in Classic. That interview also reported fixed raid sizes rather than flexible scaling at the time; these are development comments and plans, which can evolve.

Did the project grow from a four-dungeon pitch?
The title’s quoted line—“Our original pitch internally was: We’ll do 4 new dungeons”—cannot be independently verified from the cited published accounts. The available official recap establishes that Blizzard announced nine dungeons, but it does not establish who made that earlier statement, when it was made, what surrounded it, or why the project’s scope changed.
Accordingly, it is not possible to give a reliable causal account of the alleged expansion from four dungeons to the announced package. The interviews do offer broader context: developers discuss player feedback on Season of Discovery and a desire to preserve Classic’s grounded, social character. That context should not be treated as proof that either factor caused the specific scope change.

What the announcement means for players
The clearest way to understand Forever’s direction is through the features Blizzard has announced and the design goals developers have described: a level-60 journey through an expanded original Azeroth, horizontal progression, support for alternate-character play, and content intended to encourage travel and social cooperation. The scale is substantially broader than a small dungeon-only update, but the announced plans and developer intentions are not a substitute for seeing how the released game implements them.
