Choose Retail if you want the current World of Warcraft expansion, modern systems, and the live game most players mean when they say “WoW today.” Choose Classic only after deciding which Classic mode you mean: Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, or Mists of Pandaria Classic. They are separate experiences with different eras, rules, and progression.
Your subscription or game time provides access to Retail and the listed Classic modes, but the latest Retail expansion is a separate purchase. Classic progress does not carry between Classic versions, so select the intended mode and realm before you invest serious time in a character.
WoW Classic vs. Retail: the short answer
Retail is the modern, continuously updated version of World of Warcraft. It includes access to the game’s previous expansion content through the current product, while the newest expansion must be bought separately. Its systems, class design, interface, endgame activities, and progression are built around the current expansion.

A character, class, or activity that exists in one of those versions should not be assumed to work the same way in another.

If you want the current story and expansion, start with Retail. If you want a particular historical era, slower deliberate advancement, a high-stakes death system, or experimental class changes, choose the Classic mode that supplies that feature.
What is the difference between WoW Classic and Retail?

This means “Should I play WoW Classic or Retail?” is really two questions: do you want the modern game or an older era, and which ruleset matches how you want to play?
What “Classic” means in 2026
Classic Era
Classic Era is the original-era experience. Select it when the appeal is the earliest version of Azeroth rather than a later expansion or a redesigned rule set. It is the closest fit for someone specifically seeking the original-world setting and progression model.

Classic Hardcore
Hardcore adds permanent-death stakes. A death is not an ordinary setback followed by a normal resurrection loop, so every pull, route, and escape decision carries more weight. Pick it only if losing a character permanently is part of the appeal, not merely an inconvenience you hope to tolerate.
Season of Discovery
Season of Discovery changes class possibilities with runes and other seasonal systems. It is for players who want an older-world foundation with new combinations and discoveries rather than a strict recreation of the original rules. Because seasonal designs can change, check the current in-game and Blizzard announcements before planning a long-term character around a particular ability.
Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition
Blizzard announced this edition as live on February 5, 2026. It moves the game into Outland and raises the level cap to 70. The edition includes Blood Elves and Draenei, flying mounts, the Karazhan, Gruul’s Lair, and Magtheridon’s Lair raids, Arena play, Jewelcrafting, and a guild bank.
Those features identify this edition; they are not features shared automatically by every Classic mode. Choose it when the Burning Crusade era, its zones and races, and its expansion-specific progression are the reason you are returning.

Mists of Pandaria Classic
Blizzard announced Mists of Pandaria Classic for summer 2025. It represents a later expansion era than Burning Crusade Classic and should be treated as its own product with its own progression and rules. The announcement is historical context; current patch, realm, and availability details can change, so confirm them in the current Classic launcher and Blizzard notices.

Why Retail is the better default for most new or returning players
Retail is the straightforward recommendation when your goal is “the current World of Warcraft.” You do not have to choose among several historical timelines, and your decision is not constrained by a permanent-death rule or a seasonal rune system. The newest expansion is where Blizzard concentrates its current story, endgame updates, class adjustments, and live-service support.
Retail is also the safer choice if you are joining friends who are already playing the current expansion, want current group activities, or do not have a specific older era in mind. You still receive access to past expansion content through the modern product, although the latest expansion requires a separate purchase.
Do not select Retail merely because it is newer if your actual goal is a particular old-world experience. Retail’s access to older content does not make it identical to an era-specific Classic realm; the surrounding systems and progression belong to the current game.

You want a specific historical setting
Classic is a better fit when the destination matters more than the modern feature set: original-era Azeroth, Outland in Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, or the later Mists of Pandaria era. Decide on the setting first, then select the corresponding mode.
You prefer deliberate progression
Many players choose Classic for a more measured journey in which route planning, class roles, group composition, and resource management are central to advancement. Treat that as a preference for a style of play, not as a promise of a particular leveling time or population; official product information does not establish comparative completion times or player counts.
You want unusual class possibilities
Season of Discovery is the clear Classic option when rune-enabled abilities and experimentation are the attraction. The system changes what classes can do, so it is not the correct choice for someone who wants an untouched historical ruleset.
You enjoy meaningful risk
Hardcore is appropriate only when permanent death creates the tension you want. If you would rather recover a dead character normally, choose a non-Hardcore mode.

- Ask whether you want the current expansion. If yes, choose Retail. The latest expansion is purchased separately from the subscription or game time.
- Name the era you want. Choose Classic Era for the original period, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary for Outland and its level-70 systems, or Mists of Pandaria Classic for that later expansion era.
- Choose your risk level. Select Hardcore only if permanent death is acceptable. Otherwise use a normal mode.
- Decide whether new class mechanics are a feature. Pick Season of Discovery for rune-based experimentation; avoid it if historical fidelity is your priority.
- Check where your friends play. Retail and each Classic mode use separate character environments. Coordinate the exact game version and realm, not just “WoW.”
- Confirm the current mode list and realm rules. Blizzard’s Classic hub and launcher are the authoritative places to verify availability before creating a character.
Progression, realms, and the cost of choosing the wrong mode
Blizzard states that Classic progress does not carry over to another Classic version. A character developed in one Classic environment is not a universal character you can move into every other Classic timeline. This is the most important practical difference for a new player: mode selection is a commitment to that version’s progression.

Do not spend weeks leveling before discovering that your friends are on a different Classic product. Confirm all three labels at character creation:
- The game version, such as Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, or Mists of Pandaria Classic.
- The realm type and name.
- Whether your friends’ characters are eligible to group with yours.
Blizzard’s 20th Anniversary announcement described specific launch-era realm rules. It said Hardcore characters could transfer to non-Hardcore Normal PvE Anniversary realms, while normal PvE and PvP characters were restricted by realm type. Those were rules for the Anniversary realm arrangement and transfer availability can change, so verify the current transfer screen before relying on a transfer as a safety plan.
Progression style: what you are actually signing up for
Retail and Classic differ less by a single feature than by the rhythm they encourage. Retail asks you to follow the current product and its ongoing updates. That makes it the logical home for players who want the present-day storyline, current class tuning, and the expansion Blizzard is actively supporting.
Classic asks you to commit to a defined era or experiment. In Era, the historical setting is the point. In Hardcore, survival changes ordinary travel and combat decisions because death is permanent. In Season of Discovery, runes make experimentation part of the appeal. In Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, Outland, level 70, flying, Arena, Jewelcrafting, guild banks, and the named raids define the destination. These are different reasons to play, not interchangeable difficulty settings.
Before choosing, write down the feature you would miss most. If the answer is “the current expansion,” select Retail. If it is “the original world,” choose Era. If it is “permanent stakes,” choose Hardcore. If it is “new class combinations,” choose Season of Discovery. If it is a named expansion such as Burning Crusade or Mists of Pandaria, use that edition rather than assuming another Classic mode will eventually provide the same progression.
Playing with friends and choosing a realm
“We play WoW together” is not precise enough to organize a group. Ask your friends whether they mean Retail, Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, or Mists of Pandaria Classic, then confirm the realm name and type. Characters in separate products do not become compatible simply because both players call the game Classic.
Realm rules matter as well. The 20th Anniversary announcement documented one arrangement in which Hardcore characters could transfer to non-Hardcore Normal PvE Anniversary realms, while normal PvE and PvP characters were constrained by realm type. That example is useful for understanding why realm labels matter, but it is not a guarantee that the same transfer is available now. Treat the live transfer interface as the final authority.
If a group is undecided, create no long-term character until everyone agrees on the exact mode. A short test session can help you compare the feel, but do not assume that levels, professions, gear, or achievements earned in one Classic version will follow you to another.

Access, purchases, and requirements
Subscription and expansion access
One active subscription or game time gives access to Retail and the Classic modes listed by Blizzard. The newest Retail expansion is a separate purchase. The official details cited here do not establish a current subscription price, expansion price, regional discount, or promotion, so check the account store for your country rather than relying on an old figure.
PC input requirements
Blizzard’s World of Warcraft requirements text says PC play requires a keyboard and mouse and that other input devices are unsupported. You do not need premium hardware to choose either version; a basic keyboard and mouse are sufficient under that requirement. Requirements can change, so check the current product page if you are installing on a new machine.

Assuming “Classic” is one game
It is not. Ask a friend or guide to identify the exact mode. “Classic” without a suffix is not enough information to establish the rules, era, or character destination.
Picking a mode because its name sounds familiar
Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary and Mists of Pandaria Classic are expansion-era products, while Classic Era and Hardcore represent different rule goals. Read the mode description in the launcher before confirming a realm.
Starting Hardcore casually
Permanent death changes how you evaluate every fight and travel route. If that pressure is not what you want, use a normal mode from the start rather than treating Hardcore as a test character.
Expecting characters to follow you between versions
They will not. Blizzard’s FAQ specifically says Classic progress does not carry between Classic versions. Make the mode decision before investing in professions, gear, or a long leveling plan.
Using an old announcement as a current availability list
Announcements provide dated context. The current Classic hub and launcher should decide what is live, which realms exist, and what transfers are offered at the moment you play.
Assuming every expansion feature appears everywhere
Flying mounts, Blood Elves, Draenei, Arena, Jewelcrafting, guild banks, and the named raids belong to the Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary description. Do not use those features to describe Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery, or Mists of Pandaria Classic unless Blizzard’s current product information explicitly lists them there.
