Choose the Classic version and realm ruleset first; treat transfers as a service-specific exception, not a way to merge characters. Blizzard separates Classic into several versions, and progress stays with the version where the character was created. Realm type (Normal PvE, PvP, or Hardcore), the destination of that version’s progression, and the current eligibility shown in the game client determine whether a move is possible. The free Anniversary-to-Classic Era transfer ended on January 12, 2026; characters left on Anniversary realms were announced to continue into Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary.

What “WoW Classic” includes now

“Classic” is a family of separately selectable game versions rather than one shared character pool. Blizzard’s current Classic landing page lists WoW Classic, WoW Classic Hardcore, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, Mists of Pandaria Classic, and Season of Discovery as available with a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. The exact list and service options can change, so use the versions displayed in your current client.

Version or mode What it represents Progression or transfer point
WoW Classic The non-expansion Classic path, commonly associated with Classic Era realms. Progress does not carry into another Classic version.
WoW Classic Hardcore Classic rules with permanent-death consequences. Hardcore Anniversary characters can move to eligible non-Hardcore Normal PvE Anniversary realms; they do not simply become characters in every Classic version.
Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition The Anniversary progression path into the first expansion. Anniversary characters remaining after the Era-transfer window were announced to continue here.
Mists of Pandaria Classic A separate later-expansion Classic version. The supplied official material does not establish a general transfer route from other Classic versions.
Season of Discovery A separate seasonal Classic ruleset. The supplied official material does not establish a general transfer route from other Classic versions.

Blizzard’s Classic Game Modes FAQ gives the governing rule: “Will my progress in WoW: Classic carry over to any other version of Classic? No. In WoW Classic, your character’s story remains on this iteration of WoW.” A level, quest history, items, professions, achievements, or gold therefore should not be assumed to follow a character into another version.

How to choose a realm

Realm choice is a decision about rules and long-term destination, not a universal ranking. Current population and faction-balance figures are not established by the official material covered here, so no realm can responsibly be called “the best” from those sources alone. Use the following order when several realms are available.

1. Pick the ruleset you actually want

  • Normal PvE: The intended environment for players who want open-world play without the normal PvP-realm expectation of enemy-faction attacks. Anniversary PvE progression realms were intended to advance toward Burning Crusade Classic.
  • PvP: Choose this when contested-world combat and a faction-based environment are part of the appeal. The Anniversary announcement described faction-balanced PvP realms progressing toward Burning Crusade Classic.
  • Hardcore: Choose this only if the permanent-death challenge is acceptable. Anniversary Hardcore realms progress through Classic Era phases and do not progress into Burning Crusade Classic.

2. Match the realm to your friends or guild

Social compatibility is often more important than a speculative population label. Confirm the exact version, realm name, realm type, and faction used by the people you intend to play with. A character in another version or on a different realm type may be unable to join them even when the names look similar.

3. Check the progression destination

Ask whether you want a non-expansion Era experience or a realm that is moving through an expansion. Anniversary Normal PvE and PvP characters were placed on progression paths toward Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. Anniversary Hardcore characters remain on the Classic Era-style progression path. That destination is part of the initial choice; a later transfer is not guaranteed to reverse it.

4. Treat population and faction balance as live information

Population, queues, guild recruitment, and faction balance can change. The official material used for this guide supplies no current figures, so check the realm list and your community’s current activity immediately before creating a character. Do not infer today’s population from an old launch article or from a realm’s historical reputation.

Anniversary realm rules and movement

Blizzard’s November 21, 2024 Anniversary announcement separates the realm types and places limits on movement between them.

Character’s Anniversary realm Published movement rule Progression described by Blizzard
Normal PvE Remains within Normal PvE realms; it cannot move to a different realm type under the stated rule. PvE progression realms were intended to advance to Burning Crusade Classic.
PvP Remains within PvP realms; it cannot move to a different realm type under the stated rule. Faction-balanced PvP progression toward Burning Crusade Classic.
Hardcore Can transfer to a non-Hardcore Normal PvE Anniversary realm. Continues through Classic Era phases rather than into Burning Crusade Classic.

The announcement says PvE and PvP characters cannot transfer between those different rule sets. That restriction is separate from any later service terms such as cooldowns, level requirements, destination availability, or cost. A service that exists for one Anniversary route should not be treated as proof that every other route exists.

Does Classic progress carry to another version?

No. Classic versions maintain separate progression. A character made in one version does not automatically appear in another with its level and possessions. This applies to the major versions listed on Blizzard’s current Classic page, not only to the Anniversary realms.

There are two practical consequences:

  • Creating a character in the wrong version is not corrected by choosing another realm later; the other version has its own character and progression records.
  • A transfer, when offered, is a service within the rules Blizzard publishes for that specific character and destination. It is not a general account-wide migration or a merge of versions.

Can an Anniversary character move to Classic Era?

The free Anniversary-to-Classic Era transfer window ended January 12, 2026. Blizzard’s February 5, 2026 announcement for Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary stated that characters left on Anniversary realms would continue into Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. Do not present the former free transfer as an open option after that deadline.

If you are checking a character now, use the service information displayed for that character in the current game client. Blizzard can change availability, and the published deadline does not establish that a paid or alternate Era route exists today. If the client does not offer the destination, assume the move is unavailable unless a current Blizzard notice says otherwise.

How to check a transfer before you act

Because transfer rules are version- and service-specific, verify the actual character rather than relying on an old guide.

  1. Identify the source: On the character-selection screen, note the exact Classic version and the realm type shown for the character.
  2. Identify the destination: Write down the target version, realm, and realm type. A similar realm name in another version is not an equivalent destination.
  3. Open the current service details: Use the character’s in-game Shop or Services option, or the current Blizzard support page linked from the client. Read the eligibility, restrictions, price, cooldown, and destination list presented for that character.
  4. Check rule-set compatibility: Confirm that the source and destination satisfy the published PvE, PvP, or Hardcore rules. Do not assume a normal paid transfer overrides a realm-type restriction.
  5. Review the confirmation screen: Before accepting, verify the character name, source realm, destination realm, and any consequences shown by the service. Save a screenshot or note of the terms if you may need support later.
  6. Stop if the option is absent: An unavailable destination is evidence that the current service does not offer that route for the character. Do not purchase a different service expecting it to create the missing route.

Why older transfer numbers can mislead you

Blizzard’s December 17, 2019 announcement for paid Classic character transfers documented terms that were specific to that service at that time. It stated a 90-day cooldown and these level-based gold limits:

Character level in the 2019 announcement Maximum gold carried
10–30 100 gold
31–50 500 gold
51–60 2,000 gold

Those figures are historical terms, not universal current policy. The same caution applies to old prices, destination restrictions, faction rules, and cooldowns. Use them only to understand what Blizzard described in 2019; use the current service screen to decide what applies to your character in 2026.

What the 2021 “clone” system does—and does not—prove

Blizzard’s May 6, 2021 article, “Playing Ahead: Making Choices in WoW Classic,” described the character-activation choice used when Burning Crusade Classic launched. Players could activate a character for the expansion path or keep a Classic Era version, with an optional clone-style approach described for that transition.

That article documents the 2021 transition only. It does not establish that the same clone service, pricing, deadline, or activation workflow is available for Anniversary characters or for another current Classic version. If a modern screen offers a similarly named service, read its current terms rather than importing the 2021 rules.

Decision checklist for common situations

You are starting a new character

  • Select the intended Classic version before choosing a realm.
  • Choose Normal PvE, PvP, or Hardcore based on the playstyle you can maintain for the entire character.
  • Confirm your friends’ exact version, realm, and faction.
  • Check current realm activity instead of relying on a historical ranking.

You want to leave an Anniversary realm

  • Record whether the character is Normal PvE, PvP, or Hardcore.
  • Check the current service screen for eligible destinations.
  • For a Classic Era destination, remember that the published free window ended January 12, 2026.
  • If the character remained on an Anniversary progression realm, account for Blizzard’s announcement that it would continue into Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary.

You are trying to join a friend

  • Compare version first, then realm type, then realm and faction.
  • If any of those differ, determine whether a current service explicitly supports the move.
  • Do not transfer solely because two realms have similar names or because an older guide lists a route.

Troubleshooting transfer problems

The destination realm is not listed

Recheck the version and realm type. The destination may be incompatible, unavailable for that service, or no longer offered. A missing listing cannot be solved by applying historical 2019 or 2021 instructions.

The character is Hardcore

Use the Anniversary rule as the starting point: Hardcore characters were allowed to move to non-Hardcore Normal PvE Anniversary realms. That does not imply eligibility for PvP, Burning Crusade, Mists of Pandaria, Season of Discovery, or every Classic Era destination.

You expected a free Era move

The announced free Anniversary-to-Era period ended January 12, 2026. Check for a current notice or an active service in the client; do not assume the former window was extended.

You found conflicting forum advice

Prefer the current in-game service terms and recent Blizzard announcements. Realm populations, faction balance, prices, cooldowns, and destinations are all changeable. Date any older advice before using it.

Bottom line for choosing and transferring

Pick the Classic version and realm ruleset that match your intended playstyle and progression destination, then coordinate the exact realm with your friends or guild. Classic progress is not shared across versions. Anniversary PvE and PvP characters were placed on expansion-progression paths, while Anniversary Hardcore followed Classic Era phases and had a published route to non-Hardcore Normal PvE Anniversary realms. The free move from Anniversary to Classic Era ended January 12, 2026, and every other transfer should be judged only by the current service terms shown for that character.
