In World of Warcraft, changing your character’s appearance and changing the way the game is rendered are different jobs. Character creation and the Barber Shop control race-dependent cosmetic features such as hair, face, eyes, skin tone and other details. Graphics settings control how those choices are displayed on your computer. Transmog is a third system: it assigns an appearance to an equipment slot, so replacing the item in that slot does not automatically remove the look.
This guide explains where each change is made, what is known about current transmog costs and outfits, why a replacement item can keep its appearance, and what to do when you want automatic outfit changes. Blizzard’s current sources do not establish a universal list of graphics-menu labels or recommended values, so graphics advice below deliberately avoids inventing settings that may differ by client version or hardware.
Which WoW system changes which part of your character?

These systems can be used together, but they do not replace one another. A higher render setting will not give your character a different face, and choosing a new hairstyle will not improve texture resolution or frame rate.
How to change your character’s appearance
Choose features during character creation
Character creation is the first official customization interface Blizzard identifies. You select a race and class, then choose the cosmetic options exposed for that race. The available controls are not identical across races, so two characters may show different categories or different values in the same part of the interface.

Blizzard’s Shadowlands preview described broad categories including skin tones, hairstyles and eye colors. It also gave race-specific examples such as tattoos, jewelry, beards, scars and hair ornaments. That 2020 preview is useful for understanding the range of the system, but it is not a promise that every named option is still present, unchanged or available to every race in the current game.
- Start a new character and select a race.
- Move through the appearance controls shown for that race.
- Rotate and zoom the preview so you can inspect the face, hair and other details from more than one angle.
- Confirm the character only after checking the race-specific choices you care about; the list of controls is determined by the selected race.
Use the Barber Shop after creation
The Barber Shop uses the same underlying customization interface as character creation. Blizzard’s engineering explanation for the Shadowlands rebuild says features such as eyes, face, beard and moustache were separated instead of being stored in a few generic slots, and that the system procedurally generates player textures. In practical terms, the Barber is the place to revisit the cosmetic controls that your character’s race supports after the character already exists.
- Find a Barber Shop in a capital city or another location where the service is available in your current client.
- Open the Barber interface and review the controls presented for your character’s race.
- Change the desired features, then inspect the preview from several angles.
- Accept the changes using the confirmation control shown by the current interface.
Because the interface is race-dependent, do not assume that a feature seen on another race can be added to your character. Blizzard’s 9.1.5 coverage, for example, documented new options for Highmountain Tauren, Lightforged Draenei, Nightborne and Void Elves specifically in character creation and at a Barber. That was a dated, bounded update rather than a guarantee of a permanent, universal option list.

What “models” means in WoW customization
A character model is more than a single texture. Blizzard’s art and engineering articles describe separate work for geometry, textures and animation, especially when facial choices are added to updated models. The 2020 engineering article also notes that the customization user interface had to be rewritten from scratch for Shadowlands because the number of options increased.

This explains two common observations. First, a new face or beard can alter the silhouette, surface details or animation behavior rather than merely recoloring the existing face. Second, a customization option can be released for one race before another because each race’s geometry, textures and animations require their own implementation. Do not treat an old preview, a screenshot or an option on a different race as evidence that every race has the same current controls.
How graphics settings affect the look on screen
Graphics settings are render-quality controls, not character-customization controls. They determine how the client draws the character, armor, environment and effects on your display. The official material available for this topic does not provide a current authoritative list of menu labels, setting behavior or recommended values, and labels can change between game versions and platforms.
For that reason, use the Graphics menu in your installed client rather than copying a fixed list from an older guide. If you need a performance or quality recommendation, consult a current Blizzard guide or the documentation for your client version and hardware. A setting should not be described as changing model detail, texture quality, lighting or frame rate unless its current in-game description and your hardware context support that conclusion.

- Open the game’s current Settings interface and enter the Graphics section.
- Record your existing values or take screenshots so you can undo a change.
- Change one control at a time, then test the same location, character and camera angle.
- Watch both image quality and frame-rate behavior; a visually attractive value can still cause stutter on your system.
- Keep the change only if it improves the result you want, and restore the previous value if it introduces hitching, overheating or instability.
If your character looks different after a graphics change, that is a rendering difference. It does not mean the Barber or transmog selection was overwritten.

How transmog works in the current system
Looks are assigned to gear slots
Blizzard’s September 2, 2025 transmog announcement describes applying and saving an appearance to a gear slot rather than to one individual item. The practical result is important: when you equip a replacement item in that slot, the configured appearance remains. A new chest piece, helmet or weapon therefore does not automatically erase the look you selected for that slot.
This is separate from your character’s face, hair or body customization. Transmog changes the visible equipment style; it does not modify race-dependent features in the Barber interface.
Setting a slot’s look costs gold
The 2025 announcement says that setting a slot to a specific appearance costs gold. Treat that as the cost of updating the slot’s configured look, not as a claim that every later outfit action has the same fee.

The Midnight pre-expansion content notes provide the implementation-oriented summary. Characters start with two free outfit slots. Additional outfit slots can be purchased with gold, and those slots are account-wide for the warband. Changes to already saved outfits can be switched for free, without paying the slot-update cost each time. The notes also say saved outfits can be placed on the action bar.

Blizzard describes “dozens of outfits” in the 2025 announcement. That is a qualitative description, not a guaranteed exact count of slots for every account, edition or future update.
Older transmog sets and Custom Sets
The pre-expansion notes say prior transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets. If an older saved look appears under that name, it is part of the conversion described in those notes rather than evidence that your character lost the underlying appearance.
How to save and activate an outfit
- Open the transmog interface using the current in-game wardrobe or transmog entry point.
- Configure the appearances you want assigned to the relevant equipment slots.
- Save the configuration as an outfit when the interface offers that action.
- Repeat for additional looks, staying within your available free or purchased outfit slots.
- Activate a saved outfit from the transmog interface or use its action-bar entry.
Updating a slot’s appearance is the gold-costing operation described by Blizzard. Once the look is saved, switching among those saved configurations is described as free and does not require a trip to a transmog vendor.

How automatic outfit changes work
Situations can switch outfits automatically according to activity. Blizzard’s examples include entering a dungeon or changing specialization. This is different from manually pressing an outfit button: the game evaluates the condition and applies the saved configuration associated with it.

- Create and save the outfits you want to use for different activities.
- Open the current Situations controls in the transmog or outfit interface.
- Choose the activity or condition offered by your client, such as a dungeon entry or specialization change.
- Assign the saved outfit to that condition and verify the preview or summary.
- Test the rule in the real activity, then adjust or remove it if another condition takes precedence.
The exact labels and ordering of Situations may change with the client. Use the conditions displayed in your current interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Why a transmog can appear to disappear

If a look is not what you expect, check the slot assignment and active outfit before paying to update anything. The system can preserve a slot appearance while a Situation simultaneously switches the active saved outfit, which makes the result seem inconsistent until both settings are inspected.
Choosing the right tool for a specific goal
- Want a different face, hair, eyes, beard or race-specific detail? Use the Barber Shop, or make the choice during character creation.
- Want armor or weapon pieces to keep a preferred style when replaced? Set the appearance for the equipment slot through transmog.
- Want several complete looks for different activities? Save outfits, then switch among them manually or assign them to Situations.
- Want better image quality or smoother performance? Use the current Graphics menu and test changes on your own hardware; graphics settings do not add cosmetic character options.
The safest mental model is “model customization, rendering, and equipment appearance are three layers.” Keeping those layers separate prevents unnecessary Barber visits, avoids paying to reapply a look that is already saved, and makes graphics troubleshooting much easier.
