The first decision in World of Warcraft is not your class. It is whether you are playing the current retail game or a Classic version, because realm rules, grouping and the opening route differ. Ask friends which version and realm they use before creating a character. On retail, faction boundaries are much less restrictive for organized play than they once were; on Classic, realm coordination remains fundamental.

Retail or Classic: which rules are you using?

“WoW” now covers the live retail game and several Classic versions. A rule that is correct for one may be wrong for the other, so identify the version before choosing a realm or promising that you can group with a friend.

Retail WoW

Retail characters use the current live systems, including account-wide Warbands. Blizzard’s April 2024 Warband preview describes Warbands as spanning characters across realms and factions within one region. That makes many collections and account-level progress available to more than one character, but it does not mean every character can join every activity together or share character-specific quest progress.

WoW Classic

Blizzard’s New Players Starter Guide gives a direct warning for Classic: choose the same realm your friends play on, because Classic characters can group only with other characters on that realm. Classic modes can also have different realm types and rules from retail. The official Classic primer lists Normal, PvP, RP and RP PvP realms, but that primer was published in 2019; the exact menu can vary by the Classic version currently available.

Which realm should I choose if my friends already play?

  1. Ask for the exact game version. “Retail,” “Classic Era,” and other Classic releases are not interchangeable for realm or progression purposes.
  2. Ask for the realm name and region. In Classic, create your character on the same realm if you intend to group regularly. A different realm can leave you unable to form the groups you expect.
  3. Check the realm ruleset. The current starter guide distinguishes Normal realms from RP realms. RP realms are intended for role-play while using the Normal ruleset. Classic’s additional PvP and RP-PvP choices may impose different outdoor combat expectations.
  4. Confirm the social home you need. If your friends belong to a guild or community, ask whether new members must be on a particular realm or faction. Do this before investing time in a character.
  5. Create the character only after those checks. Realm transfers or starting over can be inconvenient, especially in Classic where the same-realm grouping rule is central.

On retail, realm choice still affects practical social arrangements, but do not treat it as a universal barrier to playing with friends. Cross-realm and cross-faction systems vary by activity, guild configuration and current restrictions.

What do Normal, RP, PvP and RP-PvP mean?

Realm label What the cited guidance establishes Beginner decision
Normal The standard ruleset described in the current starter guide. Choose this when you want ordinary questing without role-play expectations.
RP Intended for role-play and using the Normal ruleset. Choose it when you want to participate in a role-playing community and will respect its conventions.
PvP Listed by the 2019 Classic primer as a Classic realm type. Check the rules for your specific Classic release before assuming how outdoor combat works.
RP PvP Also listed by the 2019 Classic primer. Expect both role-play culture and version-specific PvP rules; verify the current realm description.

The table is a decision aid, not a promise that every current Classic mode presents all four choices. Blizzard can change realm menus between releases.

Does my faction stop me from grouping with friends?

Not universally on retail. Horde and Alliance remain meaningful for outdoor interaction, quests and some queues, but Blizzard supports several forms of organized cross-faction play.

Premade groups and instances

Blizzard’s cross-faction instance explanation allows opposite-faction players to be invited when they are BattleTag or Real ID friends or members of a cross-faction WoW Community. The listed premade Group Finder activities include dungeons, raids, rated arenas, rated battlegrounds and Torghast. A group leader can restrict applicants by faction, so a listing being technically cross-faction does not guarantee that every leader will accept both factions.

Random matchmaking is a separate case

Blizzard’s May 2022 update notes said random matchmade activities such as Heroic dungeons, Skirmishes and Random Battlegrounds remained same-faction in that rollout, and listed excluded instances. Those are historical patch notes rather than a complete current activity matrix. If a friend cannot join a particular queue, inspect the activity’s current tooltip or Blizzard’s current support article instead of assuming that all instances follow the premade-group rule.

What cross-faction guild membership changes

Blizzard’s cross-faction guild announcement says opposite-faction guildmates can use shared guild chat and conveniences and play together inside instances. Outdoors, they remain Unfriendly, or Hostile while in War Mode. The announcement described invitations based on Battle.net friendship or membership in the same Battle.net community. It also discussed same-realm conditions in the context of that publication; because guild interfaces and requirements can change, check the current in-game invitation options before creating characters around an old rule.

Classic faction expectations

Do not carry retail assumptions into Classic. Realm, faction and version-specific rules can be stricter, and the starter guide’s same-realm warning applies specifically to Classic grouping.

How should I coordinate a character with friends?

  1. Write down the three identifiers: game version, region and realm.
  2. Record each friend’s faction and activity. “We want to quest together,” “we want rated PvP,” and “we want random dungeons” can have different requirements.
  3. Use a BattleTag, Real ID or WoW Community connection where required. These relationships are part of Blizzard’s stated eligibility for cross-faction premade invitations.
  4. Test the intended activity at low stakes. Form a party and inspect the activity or queue. If it is unavailable, use a premade listing or choose an activity whose rules allow your group.
  5. Keep outdoor expectations realistic. Cross-faction guildmates can cooperate in instances but do not become friendly neutral characters in the open world.

Where should I go after I make my character?

Start with Exile’s Reach

Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 New Players Starter Guide says new characters begin in Exile’s Reach. This introductory area teaches movement, interacting with non-player characters, using starter class abilities and managing inventory. Treat it as a tutorial: read the prompts, try each ability and learn how to accept, track and turn in quests.

Follow the live quest tracker

Expansion routes change. The cited guide discusses Dragonflight story content in its publication context, but a future update can redirect new characters elsewhere. Follow the current quest tracker, map markers and instructions shown by the game rather than searching for a fixed expansion sequence from an older guide.

  1. Accept the highlighted introductory quest and read its objective.
  2. Open the quest tracker or map when you lose the route; the marker normally identifies the next area or non-player character.
  3. Complete the tutorial objectives instead of abandoning them to chase a distant zone.
  4. Use the inventory lesson to equip upgrades, learn what can be sold and identify quest items.
  5. When a quest offers a choice, compare the item’s usable statistics with your class and current equipment.

What to learn before leaving the tutorial

  • How to move, jump and interact with objects and characters.
  • Where your basic class abilities appear and how resource costs work.
  • How to open your bags, equip items and make room for quest rewards.
  • How to read an objective, locate a map marker and return a completed quest.
  • How to recognize a group request and communicate before joining.

How do I find someone to help me?

Use Newcomer Chat

Blizzard says new players are automatically added to Newcomer Chat. You can ask experienced players who serve as guides about quests, controls, classes and social play. The current guide says access continues until level 50, so use the channel while it is available rather than waiting until you are stuck.

Ask a useful question

Include your game version, realm, level and the exact objective or error. “I cannot find the next quest after Exile’s Reach on retail” is easier to answer than “Where do I go?” Do not share passwords, authentication codes or payment information in chat.

When chat is quiet

  • Read the quest tracker and map marker again; many apparent dead ends are a missed interaction.
  • Check whether the quest is for a different phase, level or expansion route.
  • Ask a guild or WoW Community member who plays the same version.
  • For an activity problem, state whether you are trying to form a premade group or enter random matchmaking.

Can I try WoW for free?

Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 starter guide says the Free Trial covers playable content through level 20. A subscription or game time is required to continue beyond level 20; the guide describes access up to level 80 in that publication context. Because access terms, account eligibility and regional availability can change, check Blizzard’s current trial page before relying on those limits.

Question What the February 25, 2026 guide says
Who can use the trial? New or existing Battle.net accounts, including accounts with an inactive subscription or game time.
Free level limit Playable content through level 20.
Beyond level 20 Subscription or game time is required; the guide describes the then-current game access through level 80.
Classic games The Free Trial does not apply to WoW Classic games.

No physical product is needed for these choices. You need a supported Battle.net account and the digital game access appropriate to the version you select.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Choosing a realm before asking friends

Symptom: You cannot find the expected guild or cannot group in Classic. Fix: Confirm the version and realm with friends first; in Classic, same-realm grouping is the decisive rule stated by Blizzard’s guide.

Assuming faction rules are all-or-nothing

Symptom: You either abandon a friend’s faction or expect every queue to work cross-faction. Fix: Separate premade instances, guild play, outdoor interaction and random matchmaking. Their requirements differ.

Following an old expansion route

Symptom: A guide sends you to a zone that your quest tracker does not mention. Fix: Trust the current in-game objective and map; expansion onboarding is version-specific.

Ignoring the help channel

Symptom: You spend a long time searching for a basic answer alone. Fix: Ask a precise question in Newcomer Chat while your account remains eligible, which the cited guide places through level 50.

A practical first-session checklist

  • Identify retail or the exact Classic release.
  • Ask friends for region, realm, faction and intended activities.
  • Choose Normal or RP on retail according to your preferred community; verify Classic realm labels in the current client.
  • Create the character only after confirming the realm.
  • Complete Exile’s Reach and learn movement, abilities, interaction and inventory basics.
  • Follow the live quest tracker instead of a fixed expansion route.
  • Use Newcomer Chat for questions and include your version, realm and objective.
  • For group plans, distinguish premade instances from random queues and check current faction requirements.
  • If using the Free Trial, treat level 20 and Classic exclusions as dated guidance and verify the live account terms.
