Secure your World of Warcraft account as a system, not a single setting. Attach an authenticator (and a passkey if your current Battle.net settings offer one), use a password that exists nowhere else, protect the email address registered to Battle.net, and treat every unexpected login, link, or in-game message as a potential phishing attempt.
Blizzard’s account interfaces change by region and over time. Use the live Blizzard Support and Battle.net account-management pages for the labels and recovery options currently shown to you.
What you should secure first
Your Battle.net login, the email account attached to it, and the devices you use to sign in form one security chain. A stolen game password is serious; a stolen email account can also expose password-reset messages and other recovery steps. Blizzard’s account-security guidance therefore treats authentication, password uniqueness, email protection, phishing awareness, and recovery as connected practices rather than isolated tips.
- Turn on an authenticator. Blizzard recommends attaching one to the Battle.net account.
- Replace reused credentials. Your Battle.net password should not be used for any other service.
- Harden the registered email account. Use a unique email password and enable the provider’s two-factor authentication when available.
- Block social-engineering routes. Verify links and messages before entering credentials or installing files.
- Know the recovery path. If access is lost, start with Blizzard’s Account Recovery process and secure the computer as well as the account.
Blizzard explains the purpose of an authenticator this way: “Two-Factor Authentication such as this makes it much harder for someone to access your account as login required not only your password but a physical item such as a phone or a token.” That is a description of the additional step, not a quantified guarantee; Blizzard does not provide a current percentage improvement in the cited article.

How to add and use a Battle.net authenticator
Use the currently supported app flow
Blizzard’s account-security article describes a free mobile authenticator that sends a notification when a login is attempted and lets you approve or deny it. Open Battle.net account management, find the security or authenticator section, and follow the current on-screen pairing process. The exact labels and available methods can vary by region and account state, so do not rely on an old screenshot or a remembered menu name.
- Sign in by typing the Battle.net address yourself or by opening the official Battle.net app.
- Open Account Settings and select the current Security, Authenticator, or similarly named option.
- Install the official mobile authenticator requested by the setup screen and complete the pairing or verification prompts.
- Approve a test sign-in only when you initiated it. Deny unexpected prompts and change your password if one appears without your action.
- Save the recovery information or removal instructions shown during setup in a place you can reach if the phone is lost.
The cited Blizzard article says approval is generally requested once per week per device by default and that this behavior can be changed in account management. Treat that as the behavior described in that article, not as a promise that every current account has the same frequency. Check your live settings for prompt frequency and available approval methods.

Consider a passkey when Battle.net offers it
Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance also mentions adding a passkey. A passkey is managed through the devices or credential manager supported by your current account settings. Availability, enrollment steps, and recovery options are not universal, so use the option presented in Battle.net rather than assuming that every phone, browser, or hardware key is compatible.
Do not infer current availability from legacy token pages
Older Blizzard material refers to physical Battle.net authenticators. Those pages are historical references and do not establish current retail availability or compatibility. The presently described path is the mobile authenticator; a physical token or generic security key is not required by the guidance cited here.

How to create a Battle.net password that does not fail elsewhere
Choose a password that is unique to Battle.net. Credential reuse means a breach at another service can give an attacker a starting point for your game account. Blizzard’s security advice emphasizes uniqueness rather than a particular password product or required character formula.

A practical password process
- Change any password that has been used on another website, forum, game, or email account.
- Create a long, unpredictable password or passphrase that you have never shared.
- Do not base it on your character name, guild, server, birth date, real name, or publicly visible profile information.
- Store it in a reputable password manager if you use one, or in another private method that prevents reuse and casual disclosure. Blizzard does not name or endorse a specific manager.
- Enter the password only on the official Battle.net sign-in page or app. A page reached through an unsolicited message is not trustworthy merely because it uses Blizzard imagery.
If you suspect that the password was exposed, change it from a device you trust, then review the account’s security settings and email account. Changing only the game password while leaving a compromised email password or infected computer untouched can leave the recovery route open.

How to protect the email address registered to Battle.net
Blizzard describes the registered email address as the account name and a primary contact point. That makes the mailbox part of your Battle.net defense perimeter, not an unrelated inbox.
Apply these email controls
- Use an email address that is unique to your Battle.net account when practical, rather than one reused across many public services.
- Give the mailbox a password that is different from both your Battle.net password and every other password.
- Enable the email provider’s two-factor authentication if the provider offers it.
- Review recovery addresses, phone numbers, forwarding rules, and active sessions for changes you did not make.
- Keep recovery codes in a protected location that is available when your primary phone or browser is unavailable.
Blizzard’s guidance does not name a particular email provider. The decision point is whether your provider supports two-factor authentication and whether you have enabled it, not which brand supplies the mailbox.

How to recognize phishing in email, websites, and in-game messages
Blizzard defines phishing as messages or sites that imitate official correspondence to obtain login information or install harmful software. A message can look professional and still be malicious. Treat an unexpected warning, reward, suspension notice, trade offer, or request for “verification” as untrusted until you independently verify it.
Check a link before you use it
- Do not sign in from the message itself. Open the Battle.net app or type the known official address manually.
- Inspect the destination domain and spelling before opening a link. A familiar logo, HTTPS, or a page that copies the sign-in design does not prove authenticity.
- Never send a password, authenticator approval, recovery code, or one-time code to someone claiming to be support, a guild officer, or a trading partner.
- If a message asks you to run an executable, disable security software, or install an “addon” from an unknown site, stop. Use trusted addon sources and avoid executable files presented as addon installers.
- Report or delete the message after preserving enough information to identify the attempt.
Keep the computer and browser in the chain of defense
Blizzard’s guidance advises keeping browsers and security software up to date. Install operating-system and browser updates, use a security tool you trust, and scan after a suspected compromise. No particular antivirus product is required by the cited advice. Avoid signing in on a public or borrowed computer when you cannot assess its updates, malware status, browser extensions, or key-logging risk.
Why account sharing creates avoidable recovery problems
Do not share Battle.net credentials with guildmates, friends, paid helpers, or anyone who says access is needed to “fix” the account. Sharing makes it impossible to distinguish an authorized login from a takeover and can expose the email and authenticator recovery process. Blizzard’s account-safety recommendations also advise against signing in on computers whose security you cannot assess.

Instead, keep your own login private and use the game’s built-in social features for cooperation. An authenticator prompt is an approval for your account, not a way to delegate account access safely.

Start with Blizzard’s official Account Hacked recovery guidance. Blizzard’s current support text directs affected players to begin Account Recovery, secure both the Battle.net account and the computer, and continue through the support-ticket process.
- Stop entering credentials on the suspicious device. Disconnect it from sensitive sessions while you assess it.
- From a trusted, updated device, open the official recovery flow and follow the identity and contact prompts for your region.
- Change the Battle.net password to a new, unique value when the recovery process permits it.
- Secure the registered email account: change its password, enable provider two-factor authentication, and inspect recovery settings and forwarding rules.
- Reinstall or clean the affected computer as appropriate, update the operating system and browser, and remove suspicious software or extensions before signing in again.
- Review authenticator, passkey, phone-number, and other security settings. Remove methods or contact details you did not add.
- Use Blizzard Support’s account and login help if the recovery flow cannot resolve the issue. The support site includes issues involving authenticators and phone numbers: Blizzard Support.
Do not rely on old telephone numbers, regional instructions, or archived contact details. Blizzard’s live recovery flow is the authoritative route, and its options can change.
