Workers who believe artificial intelligence could make their occupation obsolete are more likely to justify harmful conduct and report counterproductive behavior at work, according to a Washington State University-led study published in Occupational Health Science. The finding describes an association—not proof that anxiety causes misconduct or that every worried employee will behave badly.

What the study found

The study, titled “In the Shadow of AI: How Industry Exposure to AI and Occupation Insecurity Fuel Moral Disengagement and Counterproductive Work Behaviors,” examined workers across 18 industries. Researchers combined employee survey responses with an objective index estimating how much artificial intelligence could affect each industry’s tasks.

Workers reporting greater occupation insecurity—fear that their occupation itself could become obsolete—also reported more moral disengagement and more counterproductive workplace behavior. Examples described by Washington State University include surfing the web during work, arriving late, cutting corners and undermining colleagues.

The release does not report an effect size, prevalence estimate, sample-size figure or confidence interval. The result therefore supports a directional relationship in this study, not a precise estimate of how many workers will misbehave or by how much.

How fear can translate into misconduct

1. Occupation insecurity

This is broader than worrying that one employer might fail or eliminate a position. It is the perception that the occupation’s underlying work may no longer be needed as AI takes over tasks.

2. Moral disengagement

Moral disengagement is the proposed psychological bridge between insecurity and behavior. Tahira M. Probst, a WSU Vancouver psychology professor and the study’s lead author, described it as “basically a way of justifying bad behavior.” A worker may reinterpret cutting corners, withholding help or violating a norm as acceptable self-protection, compensation for unfair treatment or a response to an uncertain future.

3. Counterproductive workplace behavior

Once conduct is mentally recast as justified, actions that damage productivity or relationships can become easier to perform. Probst said such behaviors are harmful to interpersonal relationships within an organization. The study relies on worker reports, so it does not establish that insecurity directly caused independently verified incidents.

Why industry exposure matters

The researchers compared industries using the AI exposure index rather than relying only on workers’ impressions. Finance and insurance were described as among the highest-exposure industries. Agriculture and forestry were among the least exposed, and effects were less pronounced in forestry and construction. The pattern was stronger in settings where the expected potential for AI-driven task displacement was higher.

Comparison What the study indicates Important qualification
Finance and insurance High expected AI exposure; stronger reported relationship between insecurity, moral disengagement and counterproductive behavior. “High exposure” refers to the industry index, not a prediction that every job will disappear.
Forestry and agriculture Lower expected exposure; weaker pattern reported in lower-exposure fields. Lower exposure does not mean workers face no automation or job insecurity.
Forestry and construction Effects were described as less pronounced than in high-exposure industries. The release does not provide industry-specific effect sizes.

What employers should do about AI-replacement anxiety

The authors’ recommendation is not to dismiss fears or treat misconduct as an individual character problem alone. They say employers should pay attention to how AI is discussed and implemented so employees remain engaged and supported.

Explain the change, not just the technology

Communicate which tasks may change, which responsibilities remain human-led and how decisions will be made. Avoid implying that adoption automatically means mass layoffs when no such decision has been made.

Give workers a credible path forward

Offer training, reskilling or redeployment information tied to actual roles. Employees need to know what skills will be valued, when training starts and how performance will be assessed during the transition.

Invite questions and surface risks

Provide channels for employees to ask about monitoring, workload, evaluation and job security. Managers should be prepared to acknowledge uncertainty rather than make guarantees they cannot keep.

Maintain fair standards

Supportive communication does not require tolerating sabotage, harassment or deliberate corner-cutting. Employers should state behavioral expectations clearly, investigate incidents consistently and distinguish legitimate workload or safety concerns from intentional misconduct.

How to interpret the evidence

  • The study spans 18 industries and combines worker reports with an industry-level AI exposure measure.
  • It identifies a proposed pathway: occupation insecurity, then moral disengagement, then counterproductive behavior.
  • It does not show that AI exposure alone causes misconduct.
  • It does not show that all anxious workers will act improperly.
  • The available publication release does not provide enough statistics to calculate an individual worker’s risk.

The peer-reviewed article was listed as published September 9, 2026, while Washington State University’s authoritative news release appeared October 14, 2026. Because the release summarizes the design and direction of results rather than the full statistical tables, readers should treat the findings as evidence of a workplace risk pattern that merits management attention, not as a deterministic prediction.
