Workday co-founder and CEO Aneel Bhusri has described Oracle and SAP as “dinosaurs” in the enterprise-AI race, arguing that their older technology foundations make it harder to deliver reliable AI-driven workflows. The remark, reported by Digit.in on October 14, 2026, is competitive rhetoric rather than an independently measured verdict—and it does not mean either rival lacks AI products.
What Bhusri said
Digit.in attributed this statement to Bhusri: “I have a lot of respect for SAP and Oracle, but I do think they’re dinosaurs. So I’ll just leave it there. I mean, they’ve built their businesses, but their technology is outdated.”
His wording targets the architecture and history of large enterprise-software portfolios, not the existence of Oracle or SAP AI features. The available reporting does not include a direct response from either company, so the characterization should be understood as Workday’s competitive position rather than an agreed industry assessment.

Workday announced on February 9, 2026 that Bhusri, its co-founder and executive chair, had returned as CEO effective immediately, succeeding Carl Eschenbach. The company framed the leadership change around its next phase in the rapidly changing AI era. In that announcement, Bhusri said, “AI is a bigger transformation than SaaS — and it will define the next generation of market leaders.”

That context helps explain the sharper language. Workday is presenting the transition from conventional cloud applications to AI agents as a strategic contest over architecture, data access and workflow control—not simply a race to add a chatbot to existing products.
Bhusri’s technical argument: deterministic systems plus probabilistic reasoning
In an ITPro report dated March 18, 2026, Bhusri said, “AI only works in the enterprise when it’s connected to trusted, deterministic systems, and that hybrid architecture is exactly what Workday is building.”
His distinction is central to Workday’s case:
- Deterministic systems enforce business rules, permissions, calculations and repeatable workflows. Payroll, expense approval and schedule changes must produce the correct result every time.
- Probabilistic AI interprets language, reasons over context and suggests what to do next. It is powerful but can produce uncertain or variable answers.
Bhusri put the operational requirement bluntly: “You can’t get it mostly right, you have to get it right every time. AI, for all of its power, is really a probabilistic and reasoning engine, and it will help to come up with solutions and answers on what step to take next.”

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWorkday’s argument is that an AI agent should be allowed to reason conversationally while the underlying enterprise platform remains the authority for data, policy and execution. In this framing, a unified data model and centrally managed permissions reduce the risk that an agent acts on stale information, violates access rules or completes a transaction outside an approved process.
What Workday says its AI can do
Sana Self-Service Agent
ITPro reported that Workday’s Sana Self-Service Agent can use live data to automate tasks including filing expenses, verifying pay cheques and changing worker schedules. These are examples of action-oriented assistance: the system is not merely generating an answer, but helping complete a governed HR or finance process.
Sana Enterprise
Sana Enterprise extends the conversational layer to third-party applications, including Salesforce, ServiceNow, Slack and Zoom. That broader connection is important because employee and finance work rarely stays inside one application. A useful agent must retrieve context and initiate approved actions across the systems an organization already operates.
Acquisition behind Sana
ITPro reported that Workday announced an acquisition of Sana Labs worth approximately $1.1 billion in November 2025. The deal forms part of Workday’s effort to build a natural-language interface and agent layer on top of its enterprise applications.

Workday’s reported adoption figures
On its Q2 fiscal 2027 earnings call transcript dated August 27, 2026, Bhusri said Workday’s AI products generated more than $100 million in new annual contract value (ACV), representing over 25% of all new ACV in that quarter. He also said more than 5,500 customers were using one or more “organic agents.”
Those figures are company-reported indicators of sales and usage, not independent validation of production outcomes, accuracy or return on investment. ACV measures contracted recurring value, while the customer count does not specify how frequently each agent is used, which workflows are live or whether deployments are broad across an organization.

Is Workday actually ahead of Oracle and SAP?
The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Workday has a clear AI narrative and reports substantial early adoption, but it does not establish that Workday has broadly displaced Oracle or SAP or objectively leads them across enterprise AI.
| Comparison area | Workday’s stated position | What can be concluded |
|---|---|---|
| Data and application architecture | A unified context and data model connected to governed workflows | This is Workday’s architectural claim; the material does not provide a neutral benchmark against each rival’s current deployments. |
| AI operating model | Agents combine probabilistic reasoning with deterministic rules, permissions and policies | It explains Workday’s safety and reliability thesis, but does not prove superior accuracy. |
| Adoption evidence | More than $100 million of AI-product new ACV, over 25% of quarterly new ACV and more than 5,500 customers using an organic agent | All are Workday-reported figures from the August 2026 earnings call. |
| Workflow scope | HR, finance, payroll, recruiting, procurement, legal and case-resolution scenarios are part of the broader agent vision | Reported examples demonstrate direction and capability; they do not quantify results for every function. |
| Market position | Workday says it serves more than 11,000 organizations and over 65% of the Fortune 500 | These are figures from Workday’s February 2026 release and do not show that it has replaced Oracle or SAP. |
Oracle and SAP remain major enterprise platforms. Organizations often run multiple systems, and replacing a core HR or finance platform involves data migration, integrations, controls, retraining and contractual commitments. Nothing in the cited material demonstrates broad displacement.

What the “dinosaurs” metaphor gets right—and leaves out
The metaphor captures a real strategic tension: established vendors may have years of application versions, customizations and acquired products to reconcile before an agent can access a consistent source of truth. Workday argues that a more unified cloud model gives it a cleaner foundation for agentic workflows.
Best Value
But age alone does not determine whether an enterprise platform can deliver useful AI. Legacy vendors can modernize interfaces, expose data through APIs, apply governance layers and connect models to transactional systems. The relevant questions for buyers are whether an agent has current data, respects permissions, produces auditable actions, handles exceptions and integrates with the organization’s existing landscape.
What enterprise buyers should evaluate
- Authority: Can the agent read the system of record and execute only approved transactions?
- Controls: Are role permissions, segregation of duties and policy checks enforced at action time?
- Auditability: Can administrators see what the agent retrieved, recommended and changed?
- Reliability: Which tasks require an exact result, and what happens when confidence is low?
- Integration: Can it work across HR, finance and third-party systems without creating duplicate records?
- Evidence: Are adoption numbers accompanied by measurable cycle-time, error-rate or service outcomes?
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Bhusri say Oracle and SAP have no AI?
No. His “dinosaurs” comment criticized what he described as outdated technology foundations. The available report does not say that Oracle or SAP lack AI products.
How many Workday customers were reportedly using AI agents?
Bhusri said on Workday’s August 27, 2026 Q2 fiscal 2027 earnings call that more than 5,500 customers were using one or more organic agents. That is a company-reported figure.
Does the evidence prove Workday is ahead of Oracle and SAP?
No. It shows Workday reporting significant AI sales and usage, but it does not provide independent benchmarks or evidence of broad displacement of either rival.
The Bottom Line
Bhusri’s “dinosaurs” line is a forceful claim about enterprise architecture: Workday believes trusted, deterministic data and workflows give its AI agents an advantage over older, more fragmented environments. Workday’s reported ACV and customer figures indicate momentum, but they are not independent proof that it leads Oracle or SAP across enterprise AI.
