There is no single best combination of safety eyewear and hearing protection for every job. Choose each device for the specific hazard, confirm its markings and coverage meet the applicable workplace requirements, and make sure it fits and works with the rest of your personal protective equipment (PPE). A comfortable device that workers can wear correctly is more useful than one that interferes with vision, communication, or other required gear.
Start with the hazards, not the product
Identify what could reach the eyes and what noise exposure workers face. Eye hazards may include flying particles, dust, liquid or chemical splash, molten material, and potentially injurious light radiation. Noise protection should be selected for the measured workplace exposure, not simply by choosing the package with the largest attenuation number.
Consider hazards that occur together. A protector that covers one exposure may not address another, and additional PPE can change fit or coverage. OSHA’s eye-protection rule says employers must ensure affected employees use appropriate eye or face protection for listed hazards, including flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, and potentially injurious light radiation. The wording is reproduced in NIOSH’s 2022 bulletin on workplace eye protection.

What safety glasses should I wear for work?
Choose eyewear whose coverage and markings match the hazard and the requirements that apply to your workplace. OSHA describes ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 as a consensus standard addressing occupational and educational eye and face protectors, including requirements, testing, marking, selection, care, and use. OSHA regulations and consensus standards are not interchangeable: check the applicable workplace rule, then verify the product marking and protection for the task.
OSHA’s selection manual cites ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020. Product markings can vary across editions, so check current labeling and applicable requirements rather than assuming every item uses the same notation. NIOSH notes that industrial eyewear may carry markings such as Z87 or Z87+ and prescription variants; ordinary prescription-glasses markings alone do not establish industrial protection. See OSHA’s eye and face protection selection guidance, the OSHA eye and face protection standard, and NIOSH’s eyewear bulletin.
Safety glasses for impact hazards
Safety spectacles with side protection or wraparound coverage may suit impact hazards when the product’s marking and coverage are appropriate. Coverage matters: lenses that protect the front of the eyes may leave side exposure, so select a design that addresses how particles could reach the wearer.

Goggles for dust or splash
Goggles can provide closer coverage than spectacles and may be appropriate for dust or liquid splash when selected for that hazard. For splash and droplets, OSHA’s guidance discusses indirect-ventilation goggles and emphasizes a tight fit. A restricted-ventilation design or demanding work conditions can contribute to fogging, so consider visibility and cleaning while preserving the required protection.
Face shields are an additional layer, not a substitute
A face shield does not provide standalone impact protection. OSHA advises combining a face shield with safety spectacles or goggles when impact protection is needed. Select the underlying eye protection for the hazard rather than treating a shield as a replacement.
Welding, lasers, and electrical arcs need task-specific protection
Ordinary safety-glasses selection guidance does not cover every optical-radiation or electrical-arc hazard. Follow the standards and qualified safety guidance that apply to the specific operation; do not infer suitability from general Z87.1 eyewear selection alone.

Do I need safety goggles or safety glasses?
Choose based on the route and type of exposure, then check that the device does not leave gaps when worn with other PPE.
| Work condition | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Flying particles or impact | Safety spectacles with suitable side protection or wraparound coverage | Markings and coverage match the impact hazard; eyewear stays aligned during movement |
| Dust | Goggles selected for dust protection | Fit and coverage address the exposure without unacceptable visibility problems |
| Liquid splash or droplets | Indirect-ventilation goggles may be appropriate | Tight fit, hazard-appropriate coverage, and usable visibility |
| Impact hazard plus face exposure | Face shield worn with safety spectacles or goggles | The underlying eyewear provides the needed impact protection |
| Welding, lasers, or electrical arcs | Task-specific eye or face protection | Applicable task standards and qualified safety guidance; ordinary selection charts may not cover the hazard |
Can I wear safety glasses over prescription glasses?
Prescription users should use protective prescription eyewear or an over-glasses design intended for the hazard. Check that the protective device covers the eyes adequately and does not shift or disturb the prescription glasses’ alignment. A device that presses glasses out of position or moves during work may compromise vision and usability. Verify the protective eyewear’s industrial markings; prescription lenses by themselves are not a substitute for protective eyewear.
What hearing protection is best for work?
The right protector depends on measured noise exposure, individual fit, comfort, communication needs, and compatibility with other PPE. OSHA says a general-industry hearing conservation program applies when workers are exposed to an eight-hour time-weighted average of 85 dBA or higher. Its guidance calls for workplace noise monitoring, selection based on individual fit and manufacturers’ quality testing, evaluation of attenuation for the specific workplace, and training in correct use. The package rating alone does not establish how much protection a particular worker receives. See OSHA’s occupational noise exposure standard.

NIOSH’s 2025 update recommends individual fit-testing for hearing protection devices. That is NIOSH guidance, not a universal legal mandate. Fit-testing can help assess the protection a worker actually receives and whether the device is being worn correctly. See NIOSH guidance on hearing protection.
Earplugs
Earplugs fit in the ear canal. Their suitability depends on a correct, repeatable fit and whether the worker can use them consistently. Consider communication and comfort demands as well as the exposure-specific attenuation.

Earmuffs
Earmuffs cover the ears and may be easier for some workers to put on and remove. Their seal can be affected by other equipment or anything between the cushion and the head, so assess them with the worker’s actual PPE setup.

Canal caps
Canal caps rest at the entrance to the ear canal and may be convenient for intermittent use. Confirm they are suitable for the exposure and remain comfortable and compatible with other gear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are earmuffs or earplugs more comfortable with a hard hat?
There is no universal answer: the interaction depends on the worker, the protector, and the specific helmet or hard hat. NIOSH warns that earmuffs and canal caps may interfere with hard hats, helmets, respirators, eye protection, and some eyeglasses. Check the entire PPE combination while it is being worn, including whether eye protection remains in place, the hearing protector seals or fits correctly, and the worker can move and communicate as required. NIOSH recommends that employers provide a selection of hearing protectors so workers can find a suitable option.
Check fit, comfort, and care before relying on the equipment
- Fit: Confirm eyewear stays aligned and provides the required coverage; assess hearing protection for the individual wearer.
- Compatibility: Try the full PPE combination, including hard hats, helmets, respirators, prescription eyewear, and communication equipment.
- Visibility and usability: Check for fogging, clear vision, freedom of movement, and whether the device can be worn correctly for the duration of the task.
- Care: Inspect and clean protectors as directed by the manufacturer and workplace policy; replace damaged or unsuitable equipment according to those instructions.
For eyewear, OSHA’s selection guidance notes that protector styles and sizes vary and that comfort, vision, movement, and other PPE affect selection. See OSHA’s selection guidance.
