Work-life balance is whether a job’s hours, workload, schedule and expectations leave room for the life you need and want to sustain. A job title, remote-work option or written flexibility policy cannot tell you by itself whether the role will be workable: ask how the team operates in practice and compare that reality with your own priorities.
What work-life balance depends on
Balance is not just the number of hours worked. It also depends on when those hours occur, how predictable they are, whether you can influence your schedule, and whether work routinely spills into personal time. The International Labour Organization (ILO) reports that over one-third of workers globally regularly work more than 48 hours per week; its 2023 review also finds that working longer hours than desired has negative effects on reported work-life balance. The ILO recommends wider use of reduced hours and flexible arrangements, including flexitime and telework. ILO, Working Time and Work-Life Balance Around the World (2023).
Work design matters too: workload, staffing, role clarity, autonomy and control over work methods and schedule can all shape the experience. The U.S. Surgeon General’s workplace framework says that increasing worker control over how, when and where work is done can help avoid conflicts between work and life. It also states: “When workplace leaders set, respect, and model clear boundaries between time on and off the job, workers report a greater sense of well-being.” U.S. Surgeon General, Workplace Mental Health & Well-Being.

Remote work can reduce a commute for some people, but it does not by itself establish manageable hours or healthy boundaries.

How to compare jobs for balance
Use the same questions for each role you are considering. Look for concrete examples rather than relying only on the job description or a general statement that the employer is flexible.
| Dimension | What to find out |
|---|---|
| Hours and overtime | Expected weekly hours, busy periods, how often overtime occurs, how much notice workers get, and whether actual hours differ from the advertised schedule. |
| Schedule control | Whether shifts are fixed or flexible, whether start and finish times can change, how predictable schedules are, and who decides when work is done. |
| Workload and staffing | Typical volume and deadlines, available resources, role clarity, and what happens when the work exceeds available time or staffing. |
| Boundaries | Whether messages, calls or unfinished tasks regularly enter personal time, and whether anyone expects a response outside agreed hours. |
| Location and travel | Whether remote or hybrid work is genuinely available in this role, the commute involved, and the frequency and predictability of travel. |
| Leave and security | How leave is requested and covered, job security, and whether using leave or flexibility carries a practical penalty. |
| Personal fit | How the role fits your care responsibilities, health, commute tolerance, preferred hours and the nonwork commitments you want to protect. |
These factors align with working-time and work-life measures discussed by the ILO, the U.S. Surgeon General and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH’s Quality of Worklife Questionnaire covers work organization, health, satisfaction and well-being. NIOSH, Quality of Worklife Questionnaire (updated March 9, 2026).
Questions to ask in an interview
Ask for recent examples and details about the particular team and role. These questions can reveal the gap between a policy and how work is handled day to day:
- “What does a typical week look like in this role, and when are the busiest periods?”
- “How often has the team worked beyond scheduled hours in the last few months?”
- “How much notice is normally given for extra hours or schedule changes?”
- “What flexibility is available to someone in this particular role, and how is it used in practice?”
- “How are after-hours messages handled? Is a response expected outside agreed working hours?”
- “What happens when the workload exceeds the time or staffing available?”
- “How much travel is typical, and how predictable is it?”
- “How do employees request leave, and how does the team cover the work?”
Listen for specific answers: frequency, notice, who makes decisions, and what the team does when capacity is exceeded. A policy description without a practical example may not tell you whether the arrangement is usable in this job.
What survey figures can—and cannot—tell you
Statistics can identify patterns, but their population, date and question matter. In Employment and Social Development Canada’s 2022 survey of employees under federal jurisdiction, 28.5% said they were “always” or “often” stressed by their volume of work in a typical week. That result is specific to the surveyed population; it is not a measure of all Canadian workers or a forecast for a particular employer. Employment and Social Development Canada, Mental and psychological health, work-life balance, and job satisfaction in federally regulated workplaces.
In the same survey, 25.7% selected fewer or shorter weekly hours and 20.2% selected more flexible scheduling as ways their work-life balance could improve. Respondents could select multiple options, so the figures are not mutually exclusive. The survey also asked, “How could your work-life balance have been improved?” Its answer choices included more notice for extra hours, less take-home work or no employer contact outside agreed hours, remote work or telework, easier leave or vacation access, and less travel. These responses illustrate concerns reported by employees in that survey, not a universal ranking of what every worker needs.

There is no universal weekly-hour threshold that defines a balanced job for everyone. Consider which conditions are essential for you—such as predictable shifts, limited travel, the ability to leave work at a set time, or flexibility for caregiving—and which are preferences you could trade off. Then compare those needs with the job’s actual arrangements, not just its title or location.

Treat the decision as a fit assessment: identify what you need to sustain, ask how the role operates, and decide whether the available control and boundaries are credible for this team. Official workplace frameworks also emphasize demands, role clarity, workload, autonomy and working-time arrangements as factors in the psychosocial work environment.
