WordPress serialized data is structured PHP text stored in places such as options, post metadata, user metadata, and plugin tables. It includes the length of each string, so a plain SQL search-and-replace can make an otherwise valid value unreadable. The safe fix is to back up the database, work on a staging copy, and use a PHP-aware tool that unserializes the value, changes the target text, and serializes it again with corrected lengths.
This guide explains what serialization is, why migrations make settings disappear, how to repair URLs and other strings with WP-CLI or a graphical tool, and how to recover when a replacement has already damaged stored values.

What WordPress serialized data is
PHP serialization converts a PHP value into a storable string while preserving its type and structure. An array, for example, can be stored as a string beginning with a:; a string begins with s:; an integer begins with i:; and an object has its own class and property representation. PHP’s manual describes this as a way to store or pass PHP values without losing their type and structure. Calling unserialize() reconstructs the PHP value.
WordPress uses two core helpers around this format. maybe_serialize() serializes arrays and objects before they are written to the database. maybe_unserialize() checks whether a value has the serialized format and, when it does, reconstructs the original PHP value. Code that reads an option or metadata field therefore often receives an array or object even though the database column contains one text blob.

What the length markers mean
A serialized string contains metadata for every string value. In a fragment such as s:23:"https://old.example";, the number after s: is the string length in bytes. Nested arrays and objects carry their own keys, values, and lengths. The database is not storing a collection of independently searchable fields; it is storing one encoded representation of a complete PHP value.
Length counts are especially important with non-ASCII text. PHP’s serialized length is byte-based, so changing characters can affect the count differently from changing the number of visible characters. A repair routine must calculate the value again rather than editing the number by hand.
Where WordPress stores serialized values
wp_options: plugin settings, theme settings, transients, and other site-wide values commonly live in theoption_valuecolumn.wp_postmeta: custom fields and builder or plugin configuration may be stored inmeta_value.wp_usermeta: user preferences, capabilities, and profile-related data can be serialized.- Plugin-owned tables: a plugin can create its own columns containing serialized arrays or objects. The table and column names vary by plugin.
- Multisite tables: each site has its own options and metadata tables, while network-wide settings may be in network options. A replacement must target the intended sites and tables.
Why a URL replacement breaks serialized data
Suppose a serialized setting contains a URL whose stored length is 23 bytes. Replacing it with a longer URL while leaving the prefix as s:23 creates an invalid stream. When WordPress later calls maybe_unserialize(), PHP can no longer parse the value reliably. The result may be a failed read, a default value, an empty-looking setting, or a plugin that behaves as though it has never been configured.
The common migration mistake
A database administrator often runs a statement like:
UPDATE wp_options
SET option_value = REPLACE(option_value, 'https://old.example', 'https://new.example');That operation treats the column as ordinary text. It changes the visible URL but does not walk the serialized structure or recalculate any length markers. The same problem occurs when a serialized blob is opened in a text editor and a URL, path, domain, or email address is changed manually.
Symptoms that point to serialization damage

Not every missing setting is a serialization problem. A plugin may have changed its option name, a cache may be serving stale data, or the migration may have omitted a table. Confirm the owning plugin, table, column, and exact error before changing anything.
Prepare before repairing a serialized value
Repair is database maintenance, not a cosmetic text edit. The safest process makes a reversible copy and limits the scope of the change.

- Make and verify a backup. Export the database and confirm that the SQL file can be read and restored in a separate environment. Keep the original untouched.
- Create a staging clone. Use the same WordPress, PHP, theme, and plugin versions as production when possible. Disable indexing or password-protect the clone so it cannot be mistaken for the live site.
- Record the target. Write down the old and new strings, the affected site in a multisite network, the plugin or theme, the table and column, and the observed error. Similar URLs can occur in unrelated settings.
- Locate the owning row. Search for the option name, meta key, or plugin table rather than replacing every occurrence in every table. Inspect a copy of the value; do not edit the production blob in place.
- Choose a structure-aware tool. The tool must read serialized values, modify the underlying PHP value, and serialize it again. A command that only performs SQL text replacement is not sufficient.
Repair with WP-CLI search-replace
WP-CLI’s search-replace command is designed for WordPress migrations. Its documented behavior handles PHP serialized data and does not change primary-key values. The command can preview changes, process complex values in PHP, and limit the operation to selected tables or columns.
1. Confirm the environment and backup
Run commands against the staging clone first, from the WordPress installation directory. Export a fresh copy before each production attempt:
wp db export before-serialized-repair.sqlUse the site’s normal database credentials and verify that the export completed. If the site is multisite, identify whether the value belongs to one site or to network-wide settings before choosing a scope.
2. Start with a dry run
A broad preview can show how many rows would change without writing them:
wp search-replace 'https://old.example' 'https://new.example' --dry-runUse the exact URL forms that actually occur, including protocol, trailing slash, and any path. A dry run is a report, not proof that every match is appropriate; review the tables, columns, and row counts it reports.
3. Restrict tables and columns
Once you know the owner, limit the command. For example, an options and post-metadata repair can be scoped as follows:
wp search-replace 'https://old.example' 'https://new.example' wp_options wp_postmeta --include-columns=option_value,meta_value --dry-runColumn names differ by table, so confirm that each listed column exists. If a URL appears in a primary-key or identifier column, do not replace it; WP-CLI is documented not to alter primary-key values, but explicit scope still reduces risk. Many migrations also exclude guid deliberately because a post’s GUID has semantics beyond the visible site URL; decide that policy before running the command rather than changing it accidentally.

4. Use precise PHP processing for difficult values
For complex or deeply nested serialized values, add --precise to force PHP processing:
wp search-replace 'https://old.example' 'https://new.example' wp_options wp_postmeta --precise --dry-runPrecise processing can take longer because values are interpreted rather than handled by a faster database path. That trade-off is appropriate when correctness matters more than speed, especially for plugin settings containing nested arrays or objects.
5. Execute only after reviewing the preview
Remove --dry-run after the preview matches your intended scope:
wp search-replace 'https://old.example' 'https://new.example' wp_options wp_postmeta --preciseRecord the command, date, environment, old and new values, and reported changes. Preserve the backup and the dry-run output with the maintenance record.

For a network-wide operation, use WP-CLI’s network mode only after confirming that every site should change:
wp search-replace 'https://old.example' 'https://new.example' --network --precise --dry-runReview the network preview site by site. A domain migration that affects only one mapped site should be scoped to that site’s tables instead of applying a network-wide replacement.
Graphical tools and how to evaluate them
A graphical WordPress migration plugin can be useful when you need a preview and do not want to work at the shell. The important question is not whether the interface has a “replace” button; it is whether the implementation unserializes and reserializes values safely.

Regardless of interface, export first, preview second, scope third, and test on staging. A polished interface cannot repair a value if the plugin only runs a raw SQL REPLACE().

Restore the smallest safe unit
If the failure began immediately after a replacement, the cleanest recovery is usually to restore the affected row or table from the pre-change backup, then rerun the migration with a serialized-aware tool. Restoring the entire production database may discard legitimate orders, comments, users, or content created since the backup, so choose the smallest recoverable unit and coordinate the change window.
Compare before editing
Export the damaged row and its backup counterpart. Compare the option name or meta key, the serialized prefix, the URL, and the length markers. Do not “fix” a number by counting characters manually; nested values and byte lengths make that approach fragile.
Use a plugin export/import path
If the affected plugin provides an export and import function, use it on staging. WP Engine identifies export/import as a fallback when serialized settings remain problematic. The plugin can often validate its own schema and recreate the value instead of exposing an opaque blob to manual editing.
Check caches after the data is valid
Once the row unserializes correctly, clear object, page, and opcode caches as appropriate for the host, then retest. Caches can preserve old settings, but clearing them cannot repair malformed serialization; data validity comes first.

Security: never unserialize untrusted input
PHP’s manual warns that unserialize() can instantiate objects and invoke object lifecycle methods. It specifically advises against passing untrusted user input to unserialize(), regardless of the allowed_classes option, and suggests safer formats such as JSON for user-supplied structured data.
A controlled database repair is different from deserializing a request parameter. Run maintenance from an authenticated shell or a restricted administrative process, use a known backup, and do not build a public endpoint that accepts an arbitrary blob and calls unserialize(). When designing new application data that users submit, prefer a format and parser intended for untrusted input, with validation and an explicit schema.

Verify the repair on staging and production
Do not stop when the command reports changed rows. Exercise every part of the site that could read the value.
- Open the affected plugin or theme settings screen and confirm that saved values are present.
- Load representative front-end pages, including pages whose layouts or widgets were stored in post metadata.
- Save one setting through the normal WordPress interface, reload it, and confirm that it persists.
- Check media, menus, widgets, forms, and other features known to use the migrated URL.
- Run scheduled tasks and queue workers that read the changed options or metadata.
- Search the intended tables for the old URL and inspect any remaining matches; some may be intentional, such as historical content or an excluded identifier.
- Review PHP and WordPress logs for unserialize warnings, fatal errors, or plugin-specific notices.
- Take a new backup after staging passes and keep the original pre-repair backup until production has been stable for the required retention period.
Preventing serialization problems in future migrations
Document URL and data ownership
Before a migration, inventory the domains, paths, protocols, and table prefixes that will change. Record which plugin owns important options and which tables contain builder, widget, or user data. This turns a global replacement into a set of deliberate, reviewable changes.
Make structure-aware replacement the default
Use WP-CLI search-replace or a GUI tool that explicitly supports PHP serialization. Treat raw SQL replacement as unsuitable for columns that may contain serialized arrays or objects, even if a small test appears to work.
Keep reversible artifacts
Retain a verified database export, the exact command or GUI settings, dry-run results, changed-row counts, and the staging test checklist. A log makes it possible to identify the first damaging operation and restore only what is necessary.
Prefer plugin-native migrations when available
An export/import feature can understand versioned settings and migrate them through the plugin’s own validation code. Use it when it is available and tested, especially for large nested configurations.
Use safer formats for new user-controlled data
Serialization remains useful for trusted, internal WordPress values, but new features that accept structured data from users should consider JSON or another parser with explicit validation. The format choice does not remove the need for access control, input validation, backups, and testing.

A concise decision path
- Settings vanished after a URL change? Stop making replacements and preserve the current database.
- Can you identify the owning row? If not, inspect plugin documentation, option names, meta keys, and staging copies before editing.
- Do you have a verified backup and staging clone? If not, create them first.
- Does the chosen tool parse PHP serialization? Require documented support, a preview, and table or column scope.
- Did the preview show only intended matches? Execute with precise processing when values are complex.
- Do settings, front-end output, and scheduled tasks pass after the change? Keep the backup until those checks are complete.
