A WordPress migration can fail even when the finished site would fit on the destination. The process may need room for the compressed backup, an extracted copy of every file, the database export and import, and temporary working files. The full condition may be in the hosting account quota, database storage, or a temporary directory such as /tmp.

Keep the old site online, preserve a complete backup of both files and database somewhere else, identify which storage limit is blocking the job, then either remove disposable temporary data, add capacity, or transfer the files and SQL separately. Do not change DNS or shut down the source until the restored site has passed testing.

What “not enough space” means during a WordPress migration

The destination server is short of usable working space at some stage of the move. WordPress describes its disk_full condition as “There is not enough free disk space to complete the update.” A migration has similar requirements, but the constraint can occur outside the visible web-root folder.

A complete WordPress site consists of two different assets:

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

  • The file tree: WordPress core, wp-content/uploads, plugins, themes, custom files and wp-config.php.
  • The database: posts, pages, settings, users, comments, plugin data and other records exported as SQL.

A database export by itself is not a site backup. WordPress’s migration guidance says to back up the WordPress directory, images, plugins and other files as well as the database, then upload the files and import the database on the new server.

Migration software commonly creates an archive, writes it to the destination, extracts it, and imports the database. That means the destination can temporarily hold several representations of the same site. A server with just enough room for the final extracted files can still fail while the archive or SQL import is being staged.

Where the missing space may be

Check each storage boundary instead of looking only at the size shown for the website folder.

Storage area What can fill it What to inspect
Web-account filesystem or quota The uploaded archive, extracted WordPress files, old copies and other account data The hosting panel’s disk-usage and quota view, or filesystem usage over SSH
Database volume The imported database, an existing database, temporary import files or a database quota Database storage and the destination database’s available allocation
Temporary directory Archive extraction, upload fragments, control-panel work files and abandoned temporary files The migration tool’s configured temporary path and the server’s temporary directory, often /tmp

WordPress’s common-errors guidance notes that operations can fail when /tmp contains too many files even if another filesystem has free capacity. A quota can also be exhausted by mail, logs or unrelated sites under the same hosting account.

Measure before deleting anything

Use the host’s file manager or quota screen first. On a host that allows SSH, commands such as df -h (filesystem capacity), du -sh /path/to/wordpress (site-tree usage) and du -sh /tmp/* (temporary entries) can show different limits; your host may restrict access or use a different temporary path. Ask support for the account quota, database-volume usage and temporary-directory limit when those figures are not exposed.

Record the size of the source file tree, the database export and any migration archive. Those measurements let you plan a transfer instead of relying on a universal multiplier. No WordPress guidance establishes a rule that the destination must have exactly twice the backup size.

Safe recovery runbook

  1. Leave the old site available. Do not delete files, databases or hosting space on the source until the destination is verified. It is your rollback path if the retry is incomplete.
  2. Create an independent full backup. Store the file tree and a database export away from the constrained destination. Keep uploads, plugins, themes and wp-config.php with the SQL file; the SQL export does not contain those files. An external drive or another server can hold the set if the destination account is full.
  3. Confirm the backup can be used. Check that the archive opens or the files are readable and that the SQL export is complete enough to import. Do not treat an abandoned, partially uploaded archive on the new server as your only backup.
  4. Measure all three capacity points. Check account quota, database storage and the temporary directory used by the migration tool or control panel. Note which one reaches its limit during the failed attempt.
  5. Remove only disposable destination data. After the independent backup is safe, delete stale migration archives, caches and temporary extraction directories that are no longer needed. Remove only items you can identify; do not delete the active site tree to make a number fit.
  6. Increase capacity when the data itself is too large. Choose a larger storage allocation or hosting plan if the measured files, database, temporary working copy and operational headroom cannot fit together. The required amount is site-specific.
  7. Retry with a lower-space path. Instead of creating a second full archive on the destination, transfer the WordPress files and SQL export separately, or stage the archive on another machine or server and stream or copy from there.
  8. Configure the destination. Create or select an empty destination database, edit wp-config.php with its database name, user, password and host, then import the SQL. Ensure the copied files have the permissions expected by the hosting environment.
  9. Test before cutover. Check the restored site privately, fix any migration errors, and change DNS only after the destination is working.

What you can safely remove—and what you must keep

Item on the new server Action Reason
Abandoned migration archives from failed attempts Delete after an independent backup exists and the archive is no longer needed They can duplicate the site and consume quota without contributing to the restored copy
Temporary extraction directories and upload fragments Delete only when you can identify them as leftovers from the failed job They are working data, not part of the final site
Caches Clear through the relevant application or hosting control, then verify the site Cache files are disposable, but removing the wrong directory can damage an application
Only copy of wp-content/uploads Keep It contains the media that the database references
Only database export Keep It is required to recreate the site’s content and settings
Live source site Keep until cutover is complete It is the rollback copy if the destination fails

If you cannot distinguish a cache or temporary folder from a live directory, stop and ask the host or the migration-tool vendor. Freeing space is not worth deleting the only usable copy of site data.

Manual migration when a plugin runs out of space

A manual move is often the most transparent low-space workflow because you control when each component is present. It still requires a complete backup and enough room for the final files and database.

1. Export the database separately

Use the source host’s database export tool or an approved command-line utility to produce an SQL file. Save it off the destination. If the export tool offers compression, a compressed transfer can reduce network traffic, but the destination still needs room for the uncompressed import process and database data.

2. Copy the WordPress files without a second full archive

Transfer the source file tree directly with the host’s file manager, SFTP or another method available to both servers. Prioritize wp-content/uploads, plugins, themes and configuration files, while preserving paths and file names. If a direct server-to-server copy is unavailable, stage the files on a separate machine or storage device rather than filling the destination with multiple failed archives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Prepare an empty destination database

Create the destination database and database user using the host’s control panel or documented database tools. Import the SQL into that empty database. Importing into a clean target makes it easier to tell whether a failure is caused by capacity or by leftover tables from a previous attempt.

4. Point WordPress at the new database

Edit the copied wp-config.php with the destination credentials and database host. Confirm the file is in the WordPress root and that the web server can read it. A database connection error at this stage usually indicates credentials, host name or permissions rather than missing disk space.

5. Correct domain values only when necessary

If the domain changes, update the home and siteurl values and perform a serialization-safe search-and-replace for the old URL. WordPress warns that a naïve replacement across the entire database can break serialized values used by settings and plugin data. Use a tool that understands serialized data, and keep the original SQL export so you can restore if the replacement is wrong.

Choosing the right remedy

Use the option that matches both the capacity problem and the access you have to the destination.

Remedy Best fit Trade-off
Clean leftovers and retry the automated migration The quota is blocked by abandoned archives, caches or temporary extraction files Fastest path, but the same archive-and-extract space requirement remains
Upgrade destination storage The measured file tree, database and working copies genuinely exceed the allocation Costs more, but preserves the automated workflow and provides headroom
Manual file and SQL transfer You can access files and database tools but cannot hold another full archive More hands-on configuration and testing; fewer hidden temporary copies
Stage off-server, then restore The destination is too constrained to receive and unpack the archive safely Requires separate storage and an additional transfer step

Evaluate each choice by available working space, the path data will take, recovery safety, access to quotas and temporary directories, and how much control you want over automation. A migration tool can be convenient, but its temporary-space behavior is not identical across hosts; confirm where it writes working files before retrying.

  • the complete WordPress file tree, including uploads, plugins and themes;
  • the database’s imported size and the SQL export;
  • the archive, if your method creates one;
  • temporary extraction and import files;
  • headroom for logs, caches and normal operation during the move.

The destination needs enough simultaneous working room for the stages your chosen method performs. A direct file copy plus SQL import may avoid retaining a second compressed archive, while an all-in-one package may require the archive and extracted tree at the same time. Measure the source and ask the host how quota and database limits are counted before selecting an allocation.

Troubleshooting after space is freed

The retry fails immediately

Recheck the account quota and temporary directory. If /tmp or the tool’s configured work path is full, deleting files in the web root will not help. Have the host clear orphaned temporary files if you cannot identify them safely.

The archive uploads but extraction stops

The destination may have room for the compressed upload but not for the extracted tree. Remove the archive and leftovers only after preserving the off-server backup, then use a direct file transfer, a staged restore or more storage.

The files are present but the site shows a database error

Check the database name, user, password, host and permissions in wp-config.php, and verify that the SQL was imported into the intended empty database. This symptom is distinct from a filesystem quota failure.

The site loads but media or settings are missing

Confirm that wp-content/uploads and plugin and theme directories were copied. A database-only restore cannot recreate those files. Review URL replacement carefully if the domain changed, because damaged serialized values can affect settings and widgets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the destination before changing DNS

Use a hosts-file override, a staging URL or another private check so visitors continue using the old site while you verify the copy. Walk through this checklist:

  • Front-end pages, navigation and search
  • Administrator login and permissions
  • Database connection and recently published content
  • Media-library items and images in posts
  • Active themes and plugins
  • Permalinks and representative 404 handling
  • Forms, email delivery and other integrations
  • Scheduled jobs and maintenance tasks
  • HTTPS certificate, redirects and mixed-content behavior

Only after these checks pass should you point DNS at the new server. Keep the old site and the independent backup until DNS has propagated and you have confirmed the destination remains stable.
