Choose WordPress-specific hosting if you want a service designed for WordPress and prefer a simpler starting point; choose dedicated hosting when you need physical server capacity reserved for your use or broader configuration control. The labels describe different things: WordPress hosting describes the application focus, while dedicated hosting describes how server resources are assigned. Either can be managed or unmanaged, so compare the actual work the provider will do before deciding.
What each hosting label means
WordPress-specific hosting
WordPress.org describes WordPress-specific hosting as a platform designed for installing WordPress, sometimes with WordPress pre-installed. Providers may also offer backups, updates, or developer tools, but those extras vary by provider and plan. The label alone does not promise that the host will maintain WordPress, plugins, or server security. See WordPress.org’s Hosting WordPress documentation.
Dedicated hosting
Dedicated hosting assigns physical server capacity to one customer. It can provide more configuration control, but the hosting arrangement does not say who maintains the operating system or application. An unmanaged server may leave configuration, security patches, monitoring, and backups to you; a managed offer may include some or all of that work. Confirm the scope in the contract.

Compare the practical trade-offs
| Decision | WordPress-specific hosting | Dedicated hosting |
|---|---|---|
| What you are choosing | A service oriented around WordPress; preinstallation and WordPress-related conveniences may be included. | Physical server capacity reserved for one customer; management may be managed or unmanaged. |
| Maintenance | Check whether the plan handles core or plugin updates, backups, security, and support. | Establish who configures the server, applies operating-system updates and patches, monitors it, and maintains backups. |
| Control | Access depends on the provider and plan; the label does not define what you can configure. | Dedicated infrastructure can allow configuration control, but verify the actual access granted by the host. |
| Cost and expertise | Compare price and support with the work the provider takes on. | Dedicated hosting is generally characterized as high-cost, and unmanaged service requires technical operations. Obtain current quotes and assess maintenance needs. |
| Performance and security | The WordPress label does not establish speed or security; evaluate plan specifications for your workload. | Exclusive resources do not by themselves guarantee application speed or security. Configuration, workload, maintenance, and provider controls matter. |
There is no established universal traffic cutoff, price, or performance winner for these categories. The available sources do not provide neutral, workload-matched benchmarks or plan comparisons. Compare providers using the same workload assumptions and current plan terms rather than treating either label as a shortcut to a result.

Which option fits your situation?
Start with WordPress-specific hosting if…
- You are launching a first WordPress site or want to focus on publishing rather than server operations.
- You value WordPress-oriented setup or support, after confirming which updates, backups, and security tasks are actually included.
- You do not have a specific requirement for exclusive physical server capacity or server-level configuration access.
Consider dedicated hosting if…
- You specifically need physical capacity assigned to your account or configuration control that other plans do not provide.
- You have the expertise and time to maintain the server, or you are budgeting for a managed service.
- You have verified that the provider’s resource allocation and configuration permissions fit your application.
A managed dedicated plan can combine dedicated infrastructure with provider operations, but “managed” is not a standardized promise. Ask which tasks are covered, what support response entails, and what remains your responsibility.

WordPress technical requirements to check
As of October 7, 2026, WordPress.org’s Requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. It recommends Apache or Nginx, while noting that other servers supporting PHP and MySQL may work. These are the page’s stated requirements guidance, not proof that every plan with those versions is equally suitable. See WordPress.org’s Requirements page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe WordPress Hosting Handbook separately recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production environments and advises hosts to test their full stack before making a new PHP version the production default. That is host guidance about production practice, distinct from the Requirements page’s stated baseline. For memory, the handbook gives starting points of 128M minimum for a vanilla WordPress installation, 256M as a recommended default for a typical production site, and 512M or more for resource-intensive sites; it explicitly says these are not guarantees. See Make WordPress Hosting’s Server Environment guidance.
