A WordPress launch is ready when the production URL, HTTPS, content, forms, email, backups, security, performance, accessibility, SEO, analytics, redirects, and monitoring have all been tested in the live configuration—not merely when the pages look finished.
What a WordPress go-live actually includes
Going live changes more than the appearance of a website. It changes DNS, the public URL, crawlability, HTTPS behavior, email delivery, scheduled jobs, analytics data, permissions, integrations, and the rollback options available to your team. A site can pass a visual review and still lose search traffic, send contact leads nowhere, expose an administrator account, or lack a recoverable backup.

Choose the right launch plan for your project
The risk profile depends on whether URLs and domains change. The same technical checks apply to every project, but migration work becomes more demanding when existing addresses must continue to work.

1. Confirm ownership, access, and the release decision
Before technical testing, write down who can make and reverse the change. Store this information in the launch record rather than relying on one person’s password manager or memory.
- Registrar and DNS account owner
- Hosting, CDN, proxy, and server administrator
- WordPress administrator accounts and emergency access
- Analytics and Search Console property owners
- Email or transactional-mail provider owner
- Backup storage owner and retention policy
- Billing owner and an escalation contact for the launch window
Name the person who approves launch and the person who can authorize rollback. Confirm that at least two trusted people can reach the required systems, and remove access that was granted only for development.
2. Verify production URLs, DNS, and HTTPS
Set one canonical address
Confirm the final hostname, including whether the site uses www or a bare domain. In WordPress, check Settings > General and verify both WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL). They should use the intended production scheme and hostname, not a staging address.
Do not point DNS at an unprepared server. The production host must already contain the final files, database, environment variables, media, and integrations before the DNS change.

Test HTTPS and host variants
- Open the canonical HTTPS homepage and several deep pages in a private browser window.
- Request the HTTP version and confirm it redirects to HTTPS.
- Test the non-canonical hostname and confirm it redirects to the chosen canonical hostname without a redirect loop.
- Inspect pages for mixed-content warnings, especially images, fonts, scripts, downloads, and embedded media.
- Check the certificate name, validity, renewal method, CDN or proxy mode, and origin connection.
WordPress documentation notes that HTTPS improves website security. Treat a certificate that is valid only on the homepage, or a proxy configuration that loops between HTTP and HTTPS, as a launch blocker.
Remove staging controls
At the planned cutover, remove maintenance mode, password gates, staging banners, test users, and staging-only integrations. Search the database and rendered HTML for the staging hostname. It must not remain in page copy, media URLs, canonical tags, structured data, feeds, downloadable files, or email templates.
3. Complete content and editorial QA
Proofread the pages that represent the business and the pages visitors use to contact it. Search for placeholder text such as “test,” then inspect the final rendered page rather than only the editor.
Review the important content
- Homepage, service or product pages, pricing, contact, about, posts, author details, navigation, footer, and legal pages
- Headings in logical order, dates, captions, image alt text, downloads, and calls to action
- Phone numbers, addresses, opening hours, prices, currency, and other location-sensitive details
- Cookie, privacy, terms, accessibility, and consent language required for your operation
Exercise links and media
Open important internal and external links, not just the navigation. Check that buttons reach the intended destination, PDFs download, images load at their intended dimensions, and no image is missing an informative alternative description. Correct broken destinations before launch. A link checker can find obvious failures, but manually test the journeys that produce leads, registrations, bookings, or purchases.
4. Submit every form and test email delivery
A form that displays a success message is not proven until the submission reaches the intended system. Use the final production configuration and a controlled test address.

- Submit contact, newsletter, login, registration, search, booking, payment, and checkout forms where they exist.
- Test required-field validation, invalid formats, spam controls, success messages, error messages, and duplicate-submission behavior.
- Confirm autoresponders and notification messages arrive at the correct recipients, with the right subject, reply-to address, branding, and links.
- Verify CRM, help-desk, marketing, booking, or payment hand-offs and confirm the record contains the expected fields.
- Check configured sender authentication such as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, or the equivalent requirements of your mail provider.
- Mark or delete test submissions so they do not contaminate production reporting, customer lists, or financial records.
Also test password-reset, account-verification, order-confirmation, and other system emails. A contact form can work while transactional messages fail because they use a different sender or queue.

5. Create a backup you can actually restore
Take a full database and file backup immediately before cutover. Include uploads, configuration needed to rebuild the site, and any custom code that is not stored elsewhere. Keep a copy outside the production host when the backup service supports it.
Record the backup timestamp, storage location, retention period, owner, and exact restoration procedure. WordPress update documentation recommends backing up before updating; for a launch, that backup must also have a known restore route.
Run a restore check
Restore the backup in a separate environment when possible. Verify that the database connects, media loads, administrator access works, forms can be configured, and the restored site is not publicly exposed. If a full drill is impractical, at minimum retrieve the archive, verify its contents and integrity, and document who would perform the recovery and how DNS would be returned to the previous system.

6. Review WordPress core, themes, plugins, and security
Update safely
Update WordPress core, themes, and plugins in staging first. Test the resulting site, then confirm the same compatible versions in production. Do not introduce an untested update during the DNS cutover itself.

Remove unnecessary exposure
- Delete unused themes, plugins, sample content, test users, and obsolete administrator accounts.
- Give each person the least-privilege role required for their work and use strong, unique passwords.
- Enable multi-factor authentication where your hosting or security tooling supports it.
- Review file permissions, firewall and CDN rules, security headers, XML-RPC or API exposure where relevant, and malware monitoring.
- Disable debug output and development logging that could reveal paths, credentials, or stack traces to visitors.
Use Site Health as a release gate
Open Tools > Site Health > Status. Resolve critical issues and investigate recommended improvements before launch. Site Health checks configuration, security, updates, and performance, including whether the site uses HTTPS. A critical issue can indicate a security vulnerability or serious performance problem; do not dismiss it without recording the reason and owner.
7. Test performance on real devices and browsers
Run performance checks while logged out and in the final hosting, CDN, and caching configuration. Test representative pages, not only the homepage.
- Server response time, redirects, cache headers, and cache invalidation after a content change
- Page rendering, image dimensions and compression, font loading, and layout shifts
- JavaScript errors, failed network requests, blocked resources, and third-party scripts
- Current desktop and mobile browsers, touch interactions, menus, search, media controls, and checkout
- Core Web Vitals or another agreed performance measurement, recorded with the page, device, date, and test conditions
Do not publish a speed score unless you measured it. A score from staging, an authenticated session, or a warm cache does not describe the visitor experience after launch.

8. Check accessibility basics manually
Automated scanners are useful for finding patterns, but they do not prove that key journeys are usable. Test the main navigation, search, forms, account flow, and checkout with a keyboard and a narrow viewport.
- Every interactive control can receive focus, and the focus indicator is visible.
- Headings follow a meaningful hierarchy and landmarks make sense.
- Form controls have usable labels, instructions, and error messages.
- Text and controls have sufficient color contrast, and information is not conveyed by color alone.
- Informative images have meaningful alt text; decorative images are not announced unnecessarily.
- Videos and other essential media have captions or transcripts where needed.
- Links describe their destination rather than relying on repeated “click here” text.
- Zooming and narrow screens do not hide content or make controls impossible to use.
9. Protect SEO, indexing, and analytics
Make production crawlable
For important pages, confirm unique titles and meta descriptions, readable URL structure, canonical URLs, open-graph sharing data, and appropriate structured data. Open /robots.txt and the XML sitemap on the production hostname. Remove staging noindex directives and accidental disallow rules. The sitemap should contain the canonical, indexable URLs you intend search engines to discover.
Configure measurement on the production property
Connect the production site to its analytics property and Search Console property. Test a page view, key events, consent behavior, and conversions in a controlled session. Confirm that the tracking code is not still sending data to a staging property and that consent choices prevent or allow tags as intended.
10. Build migration and redirect controls
If the domain or paths change, export the old URL inventory, including high-traffic pages, pages with external links, feeds, images, and downloadable files. Map every valuable old URL to the closest relevant live destination. Implement one-hop permanent redirects rather than chains.
Test the redirect map
- Request old HTTP and HTTPS URLs and old-domain variants.
- Test trailing-slash, capitalization, and common query-string variants where they matter.
- Confirm that destination pages return the intended status and canonical tag.
- Search the new site for internal links that still point to old URLs.
- Check feeds, media files, PDFs, hreflang or other alternate references, and structured data.
- Submit the new sitemap and monitor indexing and coverage in Search Console after launch.
For an unchanged-domain redesign, compare the new release with the previous site for content parity, metadata, canonicals, links, forms, tracking, and indexation even when no redirects are required.
11. Follow a controlled launch sequence
- Freeze changes. Set a time when content and code edits stop, and tell every contributor.
- Capture the release state. Take the final full backup and record the current DNS, redirect, cache, and proxy configuration.
- Switch the launch control. Change DNS or the approved deployment setting only after the production server is ready.
- Purge caches deliberately. Clear application, CDN, and browser-facing caches where required, then confirm that the new release is served.
- Run an external smoke test. From a network outside the hosting environment, check the homepage, top landing pages, login, forms, checkout, email, HTTPS, redirects,
robots.txt, the sitemap, analytics, and error logs. - Decide quickly on rollback. Keep the rollback owner and decision threshold visible. If core journeys fail and cannot be corrected safely, restore the previous release or DNS configuration rather than improvising production fixes.
12. Monitor the first hours and weeks
Launch is the start of observation, not the end of testing. Check the following immediately after cutover and at intervals agreed by the team:
- Uptime, TLS certificate expiry, server and PHP errors, and unusual response times
- Broken links, redirect failures, forms, email queues, and payment or booking hand-offs
- Analytics page views, key events, consent behavior, and conversion continuity
- Search Console coverage, crawl errors, indexing changes, and unexpected noindex or canonical signals
- Scheduled tasks, queue workers, cache behavior, security alerts, and malware monitoring
- Completion and storage of the next automated backup
Recheck high-value pages from real desktop and mobile devices. Keep the staging copy private, log each issue with its impact and fix, and update the launch record so the next release has a reliable starting point.
