A WordPress site is a collection of core PHP files, site-owned content, configuration, and (usually) an Apache rewrite file. The three directories that matter most are wp-admin (the dashboard), wp-content (your themes, plugins, uploads, and custom data), and wp-includes (shared WordPress core code). At the installation root, wp-config.php controls the database and other settings, while .htaccess can control Apache rewrite rules and pretty permalinks.
Knowing this layout lets you locate an image, identify which files are safe to replace, make a complete backup, and recover from common access or permalink problems without guessing.
The WordPress directory map
WordPress is normally installed in a directory such as the web root, a subdirectory, or a directory assigned to a particular domain. The exact parent path depends on your host. Once you have found the directory containing wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes, you are looking at the WordPress installation root.
| Location | Primary role | Usually replaceable? | Main risk when editing |
|---|---|---|---|
wp-admin/ |
Dashboard and administration code | Yes, from a matching clean WordPress package | Breaking the administration interface or update process |
wp-content/ |
Themes, plugins, uploads, and plugin-created data | No: preserve site-specific contents | Removing the active theme, plugins, media, or custom files |
wp-includes/ |
Shared WordPress PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and APIs | Yes, from a matching clean package | Changing core behavior or introducing a version mismatch |
wp-config.php |
Database credentials and installation constants | No: back up before any change | Database connection failures or a site-wide fatal error |
.htaccess |
Per-directory Apache rules, including rewrite rules | Usually can be regenerated, but preserve custom rules | Redirect loops, 404 errors, or an inaccessible site |
Core files can generally be restored from a fresh WordPress download. Your uploads, custom theme changes, plugins, configuration, and server-specific rules cannot be recreated reliably that way, so they deserve priority in every backup.

How to find the installation root
Use your hosting control panel’s file manager, an SFTP or FTP client, or an SSH shell. Open the directory assigned to the site and look for all three of these folders together:
wp-adminwp-contentwp-includes
The same directory normally contains wp-config.php, index.php, and other root-level WordPress files. If you see only one of the folders, you may be inside a subdirectory such as wp-content/themes, or the host may use a nonstandard layout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the folders are not where you expect
WordPress permits custom locations. Constants in wp-config.php can move the content directory, plugin directory, and upload directory. A host can also place the public entry point in one directory while keeping core files elsewhere. Do not infer a path from another installation: confirm the values used by this site.
wp-admin: the dashboard code
wp-admin contains the PHP files that render the WordPress administration area, process dashboard requests, and provide administrative screens. Files such as admin.php, admin-ajax.php, and the files behind Posts, Pages, Settings, Users, and Updates are part of this core directory.
Do not put themes, plugins, or uploads in wp-admin. Those are site-owned files and belong under wp-content. Editing a file in wp-admin is rarely a durable customization: a WordPress update can replace it, and a small syntax error can prevent the dashboard from loading.
When to replace wp-admin
If core files are reported as missing or modified, replacing wp-admin with files from the same WordPress release can repair them. Preserve a backup first and avoid overwriting the entire installation with files from an unrelated release. A clean package restores core code; it does not restore a missing plugin, theme, upload, or database record.

wp-content: the site-specific directory
wp-content is the directory you should treat as irreplaceable. It contains the material that makes one WordPress site different from another:
themes/contains installed themes, including the active theme and any child themes.plugins/contains installed plugins and their PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and assets.uploads/normally contains Media Library files.- Additional directories may be created by plugins for caches, logs, backups, generated assets, or application data.
Do not assume every item under wp-content is disposable. A plugin may store custom files outside its own directory, and a security, cache, or e-commerce plugin may create data that the site needs. Back up the whole directory before maintenance.
Themes
The active theme is usually under wp-content/themes/. A child theme may contain the custom templates, styles, and functions that must survive a parent-theme update. If a site displays correctly only with a particular child theme, preserve both the child and its parent.
Editing a theme file directly can be useful for an emergency fix, but it is vulnerable to updates and syntax mistakes. Keep a copy of the original file, make one change at a time, and test the front end and dashboard after saving. For durable customizations, use a child theme or a controlled deployment process.
Plugins
Installed plugins are normally in wp-content/plugins/. Disabling a plugin from the dashboard changes its state in the database; renaming its directory through the file manager is a recovery technique when the dashboard is unavailable. Rename only the suspected plugin directory, test the site, and restore the original name once you have identified the cause.
Some plugins create their own directories directly inside wp-content. Removing such a directory may delete caches that can be rebuilt, or it may delete uploads, logs, or other data that cannot. Check the plugin’s documentation and take a backup before deleting anything.

Where WordPress images and uploads are stored
Files uploaded through the Media Library are stored on the server under the configured uploads directory. In a conventional installation this is wp-content/uploads; WordPress commonly organizes files into date-based subdirectories. The actual location is not universal because the UPLOADS setting and other content-directory constants can change it.
Finding the real uploads path
- Open
wp-config.phpand look for anUPLOADSdefinition or custom content-directory settings. - In the dashboard, open Settings and inspect the Media settings if the installation exposes a custom upload location.
- Compare a known Media Library URL with the server directories. The URL may be rewritten or served from a separate storage system, so a URL alone is not proof of the physical path.
- Use the host’s file manager or SFTP to verify that the directory contains the expected image, video, document, and generated-size files.
Deleting an attachment in the Media Library and deleting a file over SFTP are different operations. The former updates WordPress records and may remove associated files; the latter can leave a database entry pointing to a missing file. When moving uploads, preserve filenames, directory structure, and permissions unless you also update the references that use them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Permissions for uploads
The web server must be able to create and read files in the uploads directory. If new images fail to upload, check directory ownership and permissions with the host rather than applying a broad, world-writable permission. The correct values depend on the server’s user, group, operating system, and security policy.
wp-includes: shared WordPress core
wp-includes holds much of WordPress’s common code: database APIs, formatting functions, HTTP handling, localization, JavaScript libraries, CSS assets, and the functions that themes and plugins call. Despite its name, it is not a place for third-party extensions; those belong in wp-content.
Never edit wp-includes to customize a site. Core updates replace these files, and a modification can create subtle incompatibilities. If files are corrupt, restore the directory from a clean package that matches the site’s WordPress release, then investigate why the corruption occurred.
Important files in the installation root
wp-config.php
WordPress documentation describes wp-config.php as one of the most important files in an installation. It contains the database name, username, password, host, table prefix, authentication keys, and optional constants that alter paths, debugging, caching, and other behavior.

A typical database connection section resembles this pattern, but the actual values are unique to your host:
define( 'DB_NAME', 'database_name' );
define( 'DB_USER', 'database_user' );
define( 'DB_PASSWORD', 'database_password' );
define( 'DB_HOST', 'database_host' );
Do not copy these values from another site. A wrong password, host, or table prefix can produce a database connection error even when every core file is intact. Keep the file outside public sharing, protect it with the host’s permissions, and never paste real credentials into a support forum or ticket that does not require them.
Before editing, download a private backup and make a second copy with a date in its filename. Use a syntax-aware editor, preserve the opening PHP tag, and avoid adding whitespace or characters before it. A single missing quote or semicolon can cause a parse error across the site.
index.php and other entry points
The root index.php is the front controller that loads WordPress for normal web requests. Other root files handle login, cron, feeds, XML-RPC, and the bootstrap process. They are core files, not templates for site content. Replace them only with files from the same WordPress release, and do not delete a file merely because you do not recognize its name.
.htaccess
.htaccess is an Apache per-directory configuration file. WordPress uses rewrite rules in it to turn human-readable permalink URLs into requests that WordPress can resolve. Because its name begins with a dot, many file-transfer clients hide it by default; enable “show hidden files” before deciding it is missing.
Only Apache-compatible servers read .htaccess. A site running on another web server may use a different configuration mechanism. If the file exists but pretty permalinks return 404 errors, open Settings > Permalinks in the dashboard and save the current structure once. WordPress can display the rewrite rules that need to be placed in .htaccess when it cannot write the file automatically.

Preserve custom redirects, security rules, and caching directives before replacing the file. A minimal WordPress block is not necessarily a complete site configuration. Test the home page, an internal post, the login screen, and any important redirects after changing it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ways to access WordPress files
| Method | Best use | What you need | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting control-panel file manager | Small edits, downloads, renaming a plugin, viewing hidden files | Hosting account login and the correct site directory | Large transfers and repeated operations can be slow |
| SFTP | Secure file transfers and local backups | Host, port, username, authentication key or password | Requires an SFTP account and correct ownership |
| FTP | Legacy transfers where SFTP is unavailable | FTP credentials and an FTP client | Plain FTP does not protect credentials or content in transit |
| SSH | Bulk backups, searches, permissions, and scripted maintenance | Shell access and command-line familiarity | A destructive command can affect the whole site quickly |
| WordPress Filesystem API | Plugin and theme operations inside WordPress | A method supported by the host, sometimes with credentials | Availability varies by filesystem and server configuration |
The WordPress Filesystem API abstracts secure read and write operations across host types. Plugins and themes should use it instead of assuming they can write directly to arbitrary paths. Whether direct access works depends on filesystem ownership, permissions, and the connection method made available by the host.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Permission symptoms
- “Could not create directory” or failed uploads: the web-server user may not own the target directory, or the directory may not be writable under the host’s policy.
- Files appear but cannot be edited: your SFTP user and the web-server user may have different ownership or group permissions.
- 403 errors after changing permissions: a security policy, ownership mismatch, or server rule may be blocking access.
- Changes do not appear: a cache or content-delivery layer may be serving an older copy; confirm the file’s timestamp and test after clearing the appropriate cache.
Ask the host to correct ownership rather than setting every directory to unrestricted write access. Record the original permission and ownership state before making a change.
What to back up before maintenance
A file backup should include the configuration and all site-owned files. WordPress’s backup guidance prioritizes the following:
wp-config.php: database connection details and installation constants.wp-content/and everything inside it: themes, plugins, uploads, and plugin-created directories..htaccess: Apache rewrite rules and custom directives, when present.- The remaining WordPress files: core files provide a known-good replacement if they become damaged or incomplete.
Files alone are not a complete WordPress backup. Posts, pages, users, settings, menus, and many plugin records live in the database. Export the database through the host’s backup system or database tool as part of the same backup job, and verify that both the file archive and database export can be read.
A practical backup sequence
- Put the site into a maintenance window if a large transfer or risky change is planned.
- Record the WordPress version, active theme, active plugins, PHP version, and server type. This information helps you choose compatible replacement files.
- Download
wp-config.php,.htaccessif present, and the completewp-contentdirectory. - Download the remaining root,
wp-admin, andwp-includesfiles, or create a server-side archive that preserves paths and permissions. - Export the database separately.
- Store the archive and database export away from the server, restrict access to credentials, and label them with the date and site.
- Test the backup by opening the archive, checking that uploads and theme files are present, and confirming that the database export is not empty.
Safe repair and recovery procedures
The dashboard will not open after a file edit
- Use SFTP, SSH, or the host’s file manager to return the edited file to its previous copy.
- If you do not have the original, restore the affected core directory from a clean package matching the installed release.
- If the error mentions a plugin or theme, rename only that extension’s directory to disable it temporarily.
- Check the server’s PHP error log for the exact file and line, then correct the syntax or restore the last known-good version.
Pretty permalinks suddenly return 404
- Confirm that the web server is Apache or that its equivalent rewrite configuration is enabled.
- Check whether
.htaccessis hidden in your client and whether its ownership allows WordPress to update it. - Open Settings > Permalinks and save the existing structure to regenerate or display the required rules.
- Restore any custom redirects or security directives that were omitted from a replacement file.
- Test a post, page, category, and the login URL before declaring the problem fixed.
Media files are missing
- Locate the configured uploads directory rather than assuming it is
wp-content/uploads. - Search for the original filename and check whether a plugin moved files to its own storage directory.
- Compare the attachment record’s URL with the server path and check ownership and read permissions.
- Restore the missing directory from backup. Do not bulk-edit database URLs unless you have a tested recovery plan.
Rules for editing WordPress files
- Make a backup before every configuration, rewrite, theme, or plugin-file change.
- Change one file or setting at a time, then test both the public site and the dashboard.
- Use SFTP or SSH instead of unencrypted FTP whenever the host supports it.
- Keep core files untouched for customization; use themes, child themes, plugins, and supported hooks.
- Do not expose
wp-config.php, database credentials, salts, or backup archives through a public URL. - Preserve hidden files and directory structure when downloading or restoring.
- When a host uses unusual paths, document the actual constants and mount points so the next administrator does not rely on defaults.
The useful distinction is simple: core code can be replaced, while site-owned content and configuration must be preserved. Treat wp-admin and wp-includes as replaceable components, wp-content as the site’s working data, wp-config.php as sensitive configuration, and .htaccess as a server-dependent rule set. That model gives you a reliable way to find files, choose the right access method, and recover without destroying the parts that make the site yours.
