To download a WordPress database, identify the database named by DB_NAME in your site’s wp-config.php, open that database in your host’s phpMyAdmin, choose Export, keep SQL as the format, and save the resulting file. Use Quick when the database belongs only to WordPress; use Custom when other applications share it or you need table-selection and compression options.
What a phpMyAdmin download contains
A phpMyAdmin export is a database dump: a file containing the WordPress database structure and content as SQL commands. It can preserve posts, pages, settings, users, comments, and other data stored in the database.
It is not a complete site backup. A normal WordPress installation keeps its database separately from its files. The dump does not include WordPress core, themes, plugins, media uploads, or other files in the site directory. A recoverable full-site backup therefore pairs the database export with a matching copy of the WordPress files.

Do not confuse this process with WordPress dashboard → Tools → Export. That dashboard feature creates a WXR XML content export. phpMyAdmin’s SQL export is the database-level dump used for database backup and database restoration.

Before opening phpMyAdmin
Have the right access
You need access to the hosting control panel or other host-provided route that opens phpMyAdmin. The exact login location is controlled by the hosting provider, so the link may appear under a database, hosting, or site-management section rather than at a universal URL.
Know which database belongs to the site
Do not guess from a list of database names. Open the WordPress installation’s wp-config.php and read the value assigned to DB_NAME. That value is the database you should select in phpMyAdmin.
define( 'DB_NAME', 'example_database' );
$table_prefix = 'wp_';
The example values above are placeholders showing the settings’ locations, not values to copy into your own file. Your installation may use a different database name and a custom table prefix.
Check whether the database is shared
Some hosting accounts place more than one application in a single database. The $table_prefix setting identifies the beginning of this WordPress installation’s table names. A common prefix is wp_, but it can be changed for an individual site. If other applications share the database, you will need that prefix when choosing tables during a Custom export.
Prepare a protected destination
Database dumps can contain account details, site settings, email addresses, and other private information. Decide where the file will be stored before you click the download button. Keep it with the matching WordPress file backup and restrict access to anyone who needs to perform a restore. A portable external drive is one possible storage category; WordPress does not require a particular device or brand.
Step 1: Read DB_NAME from wp-config.php
- Open the file manager, SFTP connection, or other file access method for the WordPress installation.
- Locate
wp-config.phpin the site’s main WordPress directory. - Find the line that defines
DB_NAME. - Copy the database name exactly, including underscores, hyphens, and any hosting-account prefix.
- Also note
$table_prefixif the hosting account contains multiple applications or multiple WordPress installations.
Database names shown by a host may be longer than the name you expected because the provider adds an account prefix. The value in DB_NAME is the authoritative identifier for this installation.
Step 2: Open phpMyAdmin and select the database
- Sign in to the hosting control panel.
- Open the provider’s phpMyAdmin link. If you cannot find it, use the host’s documentation or support channel to confirm the login location.
- In phpMyAdmin, look at the navigation area on the left.
- Select the database whose name exactly matches
DB_NAME. - Wait for the database view to load. Its tables should appear in the main pane.
Select the database itself before exporting. Remaining at a server-level view can expose export choices for several databases and makes it easier to download the wrong data. The goal is one WordPress database, not an indiscriminate server export.
Step 3: Choose Quick or Custom export
After selecting the database, open the Export tab. phpMyAdmin versions and host configurations can arrange these controls differently, but the central sequence remains the same: select the database, open Export, choose an export mode and format, and download the file.
| Export mode | Use it when | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Quick | The database is dedicated to the WordPress installation and you need a straightforward export of all tables. | There are fewer decisions; the guide’s Quick path exports all tables. |
| Custom | The database contains another application, you need to select tables, or you want compression and other output choices. | Confirm the table selection carefully. Custom options can change how a later restore behaves. |
Use Quick for a WordPress-only database
- On the Export screen, select Quick.
- Leave the format set to SQL.
- Start the export.
- When the browser offers a file, choose a known, protected location and save it.
Quick is the least complicated choice when every table in the selected database belongs to this WordPress site. It avoids manually checking a long table list and is the normal route for a dedicated WordPress database.

Use Custom for a shared database or special output
- Select Custom on the Export screen.
- Review the table list before changing anything.
- If the database is shared, select only the tables beginning with the WordPress installation’s configured
$table_prefix. - Keep SQL as the export format.
- Choose a compression option if you want a smaller packaged download. WordPress’s database guidance gives zipped and gzipped output as examples.
- Review any option that adds
DROPstatements. Such statements are relevant to an overwrite-style restore and can remove existing tables when the dump is executed, so do not enable them casually. - Run the export and save the file locally when the browser prompts you.
A Custom export is not automatically better. It is useful because it gives you control over table scope and packaging, but that control creates a responsibility to verify every selected table and restore-related option.
Quick or Custom: a practical decision
Use Quick when you have confirmed that the selected database is dedicated to this WordPress installation. It exports all tables in that database with minimal choices, which reduces the chance of accidentally omitting a WordPress table.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Use Custom when scope matters. In a shared database, selecting every table can copy unrelated application data and create a dump that is larger and harder to restore selectively. Custom also makes sense when you want a compressed package or need to review restore-related settings. The important comparison is not which mode is more advanced; it is whether you need control over table scope, compression, or restore behavior.
If the hosting account contains several WordPress installations, treat each configured database or table prefix as a separate backup scope. Record which site and prefix each export represents so a later restore does not use the wrong dump.
Step 4: Keep SQL as the format
SQL is the database-dump format to use when you need a restorable export. The resulting file contains a sequence of SQL commands that can recreate tables and insert their data in a compatible database environment.
Compression changes how the dump is packaged, not what the dump is for. Depending on the options and phpMyAdmin configuration, the downloaded filename may end in .sql, .gz, or .bz2. An uncompressed export normally uses .sql; compressed exports package the SQL dump to reduce download and storage size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Filename ending | What it indicates |
|---|---|
.sql |
An SQL database dump in an uncompressed package. |
.gz |
A compressed package containing the SQL export. |
.bz2 |
A compressed package containing the SQL export. |
Do not select a non-SQL content export when your objective is a database dump. The WordPress dashboard’s WXR XML file serves a different purpose and does not replace the phpMyAdmin SQL export.
Step 5: Save and identify the downloaded file
- When phpMyAdmin finishes, confirm that the browser presented a download rather than merely displaying a page.
- Save the file outside the live web directory, such as a protected backup folder.
- Use a filename that identifies the site and date without changing the extension. For example, a date-based name can distinguish several exports of the same database.
- Store the dump with the corresponding WordPress files backup so you know which versions belong together.
- Protect the file because it may contain sensitive site and user information.
Keep the original extension. Renaming an export from .sql to a different extension does not convert its format and can make later handling confusing.
How to tell whether you selected the right tables
For a dedicated WordPress database, the selected database should contain the site’s WordPress tables and no unrelated application tables. In a shared database, compare the table names with the prefix in wp-config.php. If the prefix is site1_, tables beginning with site1_ are the ones associated with that installation; do not assume that every table in the database belongs to it.

Do not change the prefix merely because it is unfamiliar. WordPress installations often use a prefix other than wp_. The value configured in the site’s file is the one to use when filtering a Custom export.

Exporting from the server-level view
Symptom: The export screen offers multiple databases or a broad server selection.
Fix: Return to the left navigation, select the database named by DB_NAME, and open that database’s Export tab. A site-specific download should begin from the database, not from the server overview.
Choosing a database with a similar name
Symptom: The downloaded file contains tables that do not match the site, or the expected WordPress tables are missing.
Fix: Reopen wp-config.php, copy DB_NAME exactly, and repeat the selection. Hosting account prefixes and multiple staging or development databases commonly make visual guessing unreliable.

Fix: Use Custom export and select only the tables beginning with the WordPress installation’s $table_prefix. If you need a backup of the other application too, export it separately rather than mixing its tables into the WordPress dump.
Using Tools → Export in the WordPress dashboard
Symptom: You receive an XML file and expected an SQL dump.
Fix: The dashboard export is WXR content export, not a phpMyAdmin database dump. Return to the host’s phpMyAdmin, select the correct database, and export in SQL format.

Assuming a copy of the WordPress directory includes the database
Symptom: You have downloaded themes, plugins, and uploads but cannot find posts or settings in the file backup.
Fix: Download the database separately through phpMyAdmin. WordPress normally stores its files and database in separate places, so both components are required for a complete site backup.
Looking for labels that are not present
Symptom: The buttons or tab arrangement differs from a tutorial screenshot.
Fix: Look for the same functions under the database navigation: select the database, open an export function, choose Quick or Custom, retain SQL, and download. Host-provided phpMyAdmin versions and configurations can change labels and screen arrangement.

Protecting and organizing the dump
Because the export can include users, email addresses, settings, and other private records, treat it like a confidential backup rather than an ordinary download. Keep it outside the public web directory and limit access to people who may need to perform a restore. A portable external hard drive can hold the database dump alongside the matching file backup, but it is only an optional storage category; no particular device is required.
Use a consistent site-and-date filename while preserving the .sql, .gz, or .bz2 ending. This makes several exports easier to distinguish without pretending that a renamed file has a different format. Pairing the dump with files from the same point in time also avoids confusion over which themes, plugins, uploads, and settings belong together.
What to do if phpMyAdmin is unavailable
phpMyAdmin access is provided by the host, so its location and availability are host-specific. If the control panel has no phpMyAdmin link, verify that you are in the correct account and that the site’s database service is active. Then consult the host’s documentation or support channel for the approved access route. Do not substitute the WordPress dashboard’s WXR export when you specifically need an SQL database dump.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Restore-related choices to treat carefully
Most downloads require no restore-specific options. The main setting that deserves caution is the option to add DROP statements in a Custom export. Those statements are intended for an overwrite-style restoration scenario and can delete existing tables when the SQL is run. If your immediate goal is only to keep a backup, leave restore-impacting options at their ordinary defaults unless you have a documented restoration plan.
Keep the database dump and file backup associated with the same site state. A database from one point in time combined with files from a substantially different point can produce mismatched plugins, themes, uploads, or settings during recovery.

Version differences you should expect
The WordPress database instructions were tested with phpMyAdmin 4.4.13 connected to MySQL 5.6.28 on Linux. Those version numbers describe the guide’s test environment, not a requirement that your host run those exact versions. Current phpMyAdmin installations may use different wording, layouts, or additional options. The reliable workflow is still database selection, Export, an appropriate mode, SQL format, and a saved download.
Final download checklist
- Database identity: You read
DB_NAMEfrom the site’swp-config.php. - Table scope: You noted
$table_prefixand will filter tables if the database is shared. - Correct location: You selected the database in phpMyAdmin’s left navigation before opening Export.
- Export mode: You chose Quick for a dedicated WordPress database or Custom when table selection and options are needed.
- Format: You retained SQL; any
.gzor.bz2extension reflects compression of the SQL package. - Restore caution: You reviewed any option that adds
DROPstatements. - Storage: You saved the file somewhere protected and kept it with the matching WordPress file backup.
- Scope awareness: You understand that this file is a database backup, not a copy of WordPress core, themes, plugins, or uploads.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my WordPress database name?
Open the site’s wp-config.php and read the value assigned to DB_NAME. Copy it exactly, including any hosting-account prefix. That is the database to select in phpMyAdmin.
Where is my WordPress database in phpMyAdmin?
Open phpMyAdmin from your hosting control panel and look in the left navigation. Select the database whose name exactly matches DB_NAME; its tables will then appear in the main pane.
Should I use Quick or Custom export?
Use Quick when the database is dedicated to one WordPress installation and you want all of its tables. Use Custom when the database is shared, when you need to select tables, or when you want compression or other output choices.
What format should I choose for a restorable backup?
Choose SQL. An SQL export is a sequence of commands for recreating tables and inserting data. A .gz or .bz2 ending indicates that the SQL package is compressed, not that it is a different kind of backup.
Can WordPress Tools → Export replace a phpMyAdmin download?
No. Tools → Export creates a WXR XML content export. A phpMyAdmin SQL export is the database-level dump used for database backup and restoration.
Should I add DROP statements to the export?
Only when you have a documented overwrite-style restoration plan. DROP statements can remove existing tables when the SQL is executed. For an ordinary backup download, leave restore-impacting options at their normal defaults.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why can’t I find phpMyAdmin?
The hosting provider controls where phpMyAdmin is exposed. Check the database or site-management area of the control panel, then consult the provider’s documentation or support channel if the link is absent. Availability and labels vary by host.
Does downloading the WordPress directory include the database?
No. WordPress normally stores its database separately from core files, themes, plugins, and uploads. A complete site backup needs both the database dump and a matching copy of the site files.
How do I export only one site from a shared database?
Choose Custom export and select only tables beginning with that installation’s configured $table_prefix from wp-config.php. Do not assume that every table in the shared database belongs to WordPress.
The Bottom Line
Read DB_NAME and, when necessary, $table_prefix from wp-config.php. Select that database in phpMyAdmin, choose Quick for a dedicated database or Custom for table control, retain SQL, and save the download securely with the matching WordPress files. Remember that the dump is a database backup, not a full copy of the site.
