WordPress.com is usually the better fit when you want hosting, updates, security work and support consolidated into one service. Self-hosted WordPress is the better fit when you need to choose the server environment, run custom code or manage the installation yourself. Neither is a different content-management system: both use the WordPress software. The practical difference is who operates the hosting and how much control you receive.
Choose by matching your required plugins and code, maintenance appetite, support expectations, backup needs and complete recurring cost—not by calling one option simply “free” or “paid.”

The difference in one sentence: who hosts the site
WordPress.com’s official comparison puts it plainly: “WordPress.com and WordPress.org both run on the same WordPress software—the main difference is hosting.” The comparison page was last reviewed August 11, 2026; see WordPress.com’s comparison guide.
With WordPress.com, you buy access to a hosted service. The provider supplies the underlying hosting and packages features, maintenance and support according to your plan. With self-hosted WordPress, you obtain the free WordPress software, select a separate hosting company, install the software there and remain responsible for more of the technical operation. “Self-hosted” does not mean you run a server in your home; it normally means renting server space from a third-party host.

The choice affects administration, not the basic publishing model. You can create posts, pages, menus and media with either route. What changes is the boundary between your work and the provider’s work.
WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress at a glance
| Decision area | WordPress.com | Self-hosted WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Included managed hosting; the service operates the hosting layer. | You choose and pay a third-party host, then install WordPress there. |
| Technical upkeep | The service handles many hosting tasks, including updates, security and other operational work described in its comparison material. | You or your host handle setup, updates, hardening, monitoring and maintenance; the exact division varies by host. |
| Control | Capabilities depend on the plan. Higher tiers document access to SFTP/SSH, database management, staging and custom code. | You generally choose the server stack and have broader freedom to change PHP settings, files, databases and code, subject to host limits. |
| Plugins and themes | Plugin installation is available on paid plans, with feature scope controlled by the selected tier. | You install extensions through your own WordPress installation, provided the host supports them. |
| Support | Free support resources are listed for every plan; paid plans list 24/7 Happiness Engineer support. | Support comes from the host you select, WordPress.org community resources and any support contract you purchase. |
| Backups | Automated backups are documented for Business and Commerce. Free, Personal and Premium users can export content and media. | Backup schedules, storage and one-click restoration depend on the host and any separate backup system. |
| Cost structure | Choose a plan and billing interval; currency, promotional terms and renewal prices must be checked live. | Pay for hosting separately, with possible additional charges for a domain, premium extensions, backups, security or help. |
| Portability | You retain ownership of your content and can export it or move the site. | You control the installation and host, but you must plan and execute migrations and backups. |
These are operating differences, not a quality ranking. A well-maintained self-hosted site can be excellent, and a poorly chosen plan or neglected installation can cause trouble in either model.
What WordPress.com includes
Managed hosting and routine operations
WordPress.com describes its service as managed hosting. Its plan documentation lists hosting and automatic updates among the included basics. That can remove routine server decisions from your launch checklist: you do not have to compare PHP configurations before publishing, create a database manually or arrange a separate update process for the hosting layer.
“Managed” does not mean every task is identical on every plan. Read the current plan feature list for limits, storage, staging, code access and backup behavior before subscribing. Plan names and included features can change; the guide was last reviewed September 4, 2026. Use the current plan-features page rather than an old price chart.
Plugin and theme access
WordPress.com’s plugin documentation says paid plans allow plugin installation. It describes more than 50,000 plugins in the WordPress.org repository, but that figure is a vendor-published description, not an independent market count. Plugin access still depends on the plan and on whether a particular extension is compatible with the service.
The comparison material describes more than 10,000 themes in the wider ecosystem, also a vendor-published count. A theme’s existence in that ecosystem does not guarantee that every plan exposes every customization option. Check the plan’s code, design and customization controls if your layout depends on template edits.

All plans list free support resources. Paid plans list 24/7 support from Happiness Engineers. That gives a WordPress.com customer a defined service channel, although the scope of help is still governed by the plan and the issue. If you require hands-on development, confirm whether you need a separate professional rather than assuming a support agent will build custom functionality.
What self-hosted WordPress requires
The software is free; the complete site is not
Self-hosted WordPress uses the freely available WordPress software, but a functioning public site needs somewhere to run. You pay a hosting provider for server resources and normally arrange a domain. Premium themes, commercial plugins, managed backups, security monitoring and developer assistance may add recurring or one-time costs.

There is no universal self-hosting price. Hosts package storage, traffic allowances, email, staging, backups and support differently. Compare what is actually included and what the renewal rate becomes after an introductory term.
Your operational checklist
Before launch, decide who will perform these tasks:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Register, connect or transfer the domain and configure DNS.
- Create the hosting account, database and WordPress installation.
- Set update policies for WordPress core, themes and plugins.
- Apply administrator security controls, HTTPS and account recovery.
- Schedule backups, store copies outside the server and test restoration.
- Monitor uptime, storage, error logs, malware alerts and compatibility issues.
- Coordinate migrations if the host, domain or site architecture changes.
Some hosts automate several items. Confirm the automation in the specific package instead of assuming that “WordPress hosting” provides the same service everywhere.
Where the extra control helps
Self-hosting is useful when an application needs a particular PHP version, server extension, cron schedule, database setting or deployment workflow. Developers can use SFTP, SSH, version control and custom code without waiting for a hosted plan to expose those functions. That freedom also means a bad code change, incompatible plugin or insecure credential can affect the live site, so technical control must be paired with a maintenance process.
How to choose: evaluate these needs in order
1. List non-negotiable plugins and code
Write down every plugin, integration and code requirement before comparing plans. Include payment, membership, multilingual, analytics, custom post types, API connections and any server-side job. On WordPress.com, confirm that your intended paid plan permits plugin installation and exposes the required integration. On a self-hosted account, confirm PHP, database, email and resource compatibility with the host.
If one requirement depends on editing files, changing server variables or running a background process, self-hosting—or a WordPress.com tier that explicitly documents those controls—may be necessary. Do not select a plan based only on the word “plugin”; installation permission does not guarantee that every plugin’s server assumptions are supported.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Decide how much maintenance you will own
Choose WordPress.com if you want a provider to absorb much of the hosting, update and security workload. Choose self-hosting if you are comfortable scheduling updates, checking compatibility and responding when an extension breaks a page. A small business without a technical operator should treat maintenance time as a real cost, even when the software itself is free.
3. Set your support expectation
WordPress.com offers a single service relationship, with free resources on all plans and 24/7 Happiness Engineer support on paid plans. Self-hosted users combine their host’s support policy with community documentation and, when needed, a paid developer. Ask whether support covers WordPress application errors, custom code and third-party plugins; many hosting agreements cover only the server.

4. Define backup and restoration requirements
Decide how quickly you must recover and what data must be restored together. A blog may need posts and media; a store or membership site also needs orders, accounts, settings and uploaded files. WordPress.com’s current backup guide documents automated backups for Business and Commerce. It says Free, Personal and Premium users can export WordPress XML content and their media library, but an export is not the same as an automatically restorable copy of the entire installation.
For self-hosting, inspect the host’s retention period, storage location, database coverage and restoration procedure. A backup that exists only on the same server is weaker protection against account loss or server failure. Use the WordPress.com backup guide to distinguish export from automated backup when evaluating that service.
5. Calculate the complete recurring cost
Compare like with like: plan or hosting renewal, domain renewal, premium themes and plugins, backup storage, security tools, email, staging and professional support. WordPress.com says prices can vary by currency and offers monthly and yearly payment choices. A discounted first term is not the same as a renewal price.
Self-hosting has the same issue in a different form. A low headline hosting fee may exclude backups, email, migration assistance or a domain. WordPress.com’s guidance notes that a site needs both a domain and hosting. Some annual and multi-year plans include a domain for the first year, while renewal terms still require checking; see the domain-versus-hosting guide.
6. Check portability before launch
Ask how you would leave. WordPress.com says users own their content and can move it, and its export tools provide a route for content and media. A complete migration may also require theme settings, plugin data, redirects, user accounts and database records, so document those dependencies before building a complex site.
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the installation, but portability is not automatic. Keep administrator credentials, DNS records, configuration notes and independent backups so another host can reproduce the site.
WordPress.com plan features that often decide the choice
| Feature or capability | What the official documentation establishes | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Plugin installation | Available on Personal, Premium, Business and Commerce paid plans according to the plan guide; the plugin guide says paid plans allow installation. | Free-plan users should not assume they can add arbitrary plugins. Verify the current tier before committing to a plugin-dependent design. |
| Automated backups | Documented for Business and Commerce in the guide reviewed October 5, 2026. | If automatic recovery is essential, budget for a tier that explicitly includes it or arrange an appropriate alternative. |
| Custom code and technical access | Business and Commerce documentation identifies custom code, SFTP/SSH, database management and staging features. | Projects requiring deployment access should compare those documented controls with the project’s exact workflow. |
| Support | Free support resources are listed for all plans; paid plans list 24/7 Happiness Engineer support. | Readers who want a defined first-line service channel may value the consolidated arrangement. |
These feature statements describe the documentation available in 2026, not a permanent promise. Recheck the live plan page immediately before purchase.
Step-by-step: choosing and launching WordPress.com
- Inventory the site. Record required plugins, integrations, custom code, storage, traffic expectations, user roles and recovery objectives.
- Match requirements to a plan. Use the current plan-features guide to verify plugin installation, staging, code access and backup coverage. Do not infer a feature from another plan’s description.
- Choose billing deliberately. Compare monthly and yearly options in your currency, then record the renewal price and domain terms shown at checkout.
- Set the domain. Register a new domain, connect one registered elsewhere or transfer an existing name. Keep a record of the registrar account and DNS settings.
- Build with a supported theme. Confirm that the theme’s required customization tools are available on your tier before designing around them.
- Add and test extensions. Install only the plugins you need, check their compatibility and test forms, logins, payments and email before launch.
- Configure recovery. If your plan includes automated backups, learn where restores are initiated. If it does not, schedule exports and preserve media separately; do not mistake an XML export for a full-site image.
- Publish and monitor. Verify HTTPS, redirects, search visibility, contact forms, analytics and mobile layouts. Keep an export and an inventory of the site’s dependencies.
Step-by-step: launching self-hosted WordPress
- Select the host by requirements. Compare supported PHP and database versions, resource limits, staging, backups, restore access, security controls, support hours and renewal pricing.
- Secure the accounts first. Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication where available for the host, registrar and WordPress administrators. Limit administrator accounts to people who need them.
- Attach the domain. Point DNS records as the host instructs, enable HTTPS and allow propagation before testing the public site.
- Install WordPress. Use the host’s installer or create the database and files according to its documented method. Remove default content and set the site URL correctly.
- Set updates and staging. Decide which updates can be automatic and which require a staging test. Keep a rollback path before changing core, themes or plugins.
- Install a minimal extension set. Add a theme and essential plugins from reputable sources, then test for conflicts, performance problems and broken editor functions.
- Implement backups independently. Confirm that backups include both the database and files, retain multiple restore points and store at least one copy outside the production account. Perform a test restoration before launch.
- Harden and monitor. Configure least-privilege users, malware and login monitoring, update alerts, error logging and an owner for each maintenance task.
- Document the installation. Record DNS, host credentials, versions, licenses, cron jobs, integrations and restore steps so another operator can take over.
Domains, hosting and ownership
A domain is the address people type; hosting is the server service that delivers the site. They are separate services even when a provider sells them together. WordPress.com’s domain guide explains that a site needs both and that a domain can be registered, connected or transferred. Some annual or multi-year plans include the first year of a domain, but the renewal price and eligibility need checking for the exact offer.

Self-hosted customers usually buy the domain from a registrar and hosting from a host, although one company may sell both. Keeping them separate can make a host migration easier because the domain account remains under your control. Whichever route you choose, use an account owned by the site or organization rather than by a temporary contractor.

Backups and migration: what “portable” really means
Content export versus disaster recovery
An export is useful when you are moving posts, pages and media or keeping an additional copy. Disaster recovery requires a restorable set that includes the data and configuration needed to recreate the working site. WordPress.com explicitly distinguishes the automated backup availability on Business and Commerce from XML and media exports available to Free, Personal and Premium users.
Moving from WordPress.com to self-hosting
Export the content and media, prepare the new WordPress installation, import and then rebuild any theme-specific settings or plugin data that did not travel with the export. Lower the risk of a broken launch by preserving the old site until the new domain, redirects, forms, accounts and media URLs have been tested.
Moving from self-hosting to WordPress.com
Collect a complete inventory first: database content, uploads, theme customizations, plugin data, redirects and scheduled jobs. Import what the selected plan supports, recreate unsupported functions and test the site before changing DNS. A content import can preserve publishing data without reproducing every server-side customization.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling self-hosted WordPress “free”
The software license may cost nothing, but hosting is required and domains, premium extensions, backups and support may be separate. Compare the total operating budget, including your time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Assuming every WordPress.com plan is equivalent to self-hosting
Plugin installation, automated backups, custom code and technical access are plan-dependent. Verify each requirement against current documentation instead of relying on the WordPress name alone.
Treating an export as a complete backup
XML content and a media-library export do not automatically preserve every setting, plugin table, user account or server configuration. Match the backup method to the recovery scenario.
Choosing a host on headline price
Promotional rates, renewal pricing, backup retention and support scope can differ substantially. Record the price and included services for the billing term you will actually use.

Installing more extensions than the site needs
Every plugin adds an update and compatibility responsibility. Keep a dependency list, remove abandoned extensions and test changes before applying them to production.
Leaving migration until an emergency
Export a small test site or document the move before the business depends on it. Knowing which data and settings can be recreated is safer than discovering the limitations during an outage.
Which option fits common site profiles?
A personal blog or portfolio
WordPress.com is often practical when the owner wants to publish without administering hosting. Self-hosting makes sense when the portfolio needs unusual integrations, custom deployment or a developer already maintains the environment.
A small business site
Prioritize reliable support, tested backups, forms and renewal costs. A consolidated WordPress.com plan can reduce the number of vendors to manage; a self-hosted arrangement can work well when the business has a responsible operator and a documented recovery plan.
A membership, store or application-heavy site
Start with the plugin, payment, database, email and background-job requirements. If the application needs server-level changes or detailed performance tuning, self-hosting may provide the necessary control. If the required functions are supported on a WordPress.com tier, the managed operations may reduce maintenance effort.
A developer-led project
Compare deployment tools, SSH or SFTP access, staging, database management, version-control workflow and observability. Self-hosting usually offers the broadest choice of environment; WordPress.com Business or Commerce may satisfy teams whose required controls are explicitly documented there.
A site with no technical owner
A managed service is generally easier to operate, but appoint someone to own domains, billing, content exports and recovery decisions. “Managed” does not eliminate the need for an accountable site owner.
A practical decision framework
Use this sequence rather than asking which platform is universally better:
- Reject any option that cannot run a required plugin, integration or code path.
- Between viable options, choose the maintenance model your team can consistently support.
- Check whether the support channel matches the severity and hours of your site’s work.
- Verify that the backup and restoration method meets your recovery objective.
- Calculate first-term and renewal costs for hosting, domain, extensions, backups and help.
- Document how you would export or migrate before the site becomes business-critical.
WordPress.com itself cautions that provider comparisons depend on included features and third-party packages. There is therefore no evidence-based rule that one route is always cheaper or faster. The right answer is the one whose responsibilities, controls and costs fit your site.
