A free .wordpress.com address is the lowest-cost way to start a WordPress.com site, but it remains tied to the platform. A custom domain gives you a distinct web address and can become the site’s primary address on a paid plan. You can register that domain through WordPress.com or connect one that stays registered elsewhere. The right choice depends on whether you value zero separate domain cost, a professional identity, registrar control, or one-account management.
What is the difference between a WordPress.com address and a custom domain?
Every WordPress.com site can start with a free address such as yoursite.wordpress.com. WordPress.com describes this as an included site address for people who are not ready to add a custom domain. On a free site, that address remains the primary domain.
A custom domain is an address you choose, such as yourname.com, rather than a subdomain under wordpress.com. A paid WordPress.com plan can make the custom domain the site’s primary address. Visitors then use the custom address while the site continues to be hosted on WordPress.com.
The distinction is not only cosmetic. A domain is a registered internet name, while a WordPress.com plan is a hosting and feature subscription. They can be owned, billed, renewed, transferred, or cancelled separately. Treating those as separate decisions prevents surprises when a plan or domain reaches its renewal date.

This table compares address and registration choices, not the full cost of operating a website. A paid plan may be necessary for a custom primary domain, and its price is separate from domain registration.
What does a WordPress.com address offer compared with a custom domain?
Advantages of the free address
- No separate domain purchase to get started: the site can launch with its included
.wordpress.comaddress. - Simple setup: there is no outside registrar account, transfer authorization, or DNS change to handle.
- Low commitment: it suits a trial site, temporary project, classroom exercise, or private experiment where a permanent brand address is unnecessary.
Tradeoffs of the free address
- Platform branding: the address visibly identifies the site as a WordPress.com site.
- Less naming flexibility: you select an available subdomain rather than any available domain extension.
- Rebranding friction: changing to a custom domain later requires a paid plan and domain setup, and printed or shared links using the old address may continue circulating.
The free address is therefore a legitimate long-term choice for a site whose audience accepts the platform name. It is not a hidden trial that automatically converts into a custom domain.
Why choose a custom domain?
Brand and credibility
A custom address is easier to put on business cards, resumes, packaging, advertising, and email signatures. It gives a project a stable name that is not dependent on the visible branding of a hosting platform.

The registered domain can remain yours even if you later change hosting providers. That portability is about the domain registration, not the site’s pages, posts, media, or other content. A domain transfer alone does not migrate website content.
More control over registration
You can keep the registrar relationship outside WordPress.com while pointing the domain at the WordPress.com site, or move registration into WordPress.com. Those are different control choices, described below.

Costs that continue after year one
A custom domain is not permanently free because a first-year promotion or plan credit covered its initial registration. The domain must be renewed at its applicable rate to remain active.
How much does a custom domain cost?
WordPress.com’s U.S.-dollar pricing page reviewed on August 27, 2026 listed these standard one-year prices:

WordPress.com says the listed standard rate for a standard-priced top-level domain applies to new registrations and renewals. However, an existing domain’s renewal rate may differ according to the price in effect when it was originally registered or transferred. Check the extension, currency, and renewal amount shown in your own account before treating any figure as a quote.
The domain charge is separate from the WordPress.com plan price. A useful comparison is therefore:
- First year: plan cost, plus any domain amount not covered by an eligible credit.
- Later years: plan renewal cost plus the domain’s recurring renewal price.
- External registration: WordPress.com plan cost plus the registrar’s domain renewal price and any registrar-specific services.
Do not calculate a custom domain as “free forever” merely because the checkout shows a first-year credit.

How the first-year domain credit works
WordPress.com says a new annual, two-year, or three-year plan may include one free year for a new domain registration. The credit can also be used to transfer an existing domain and add one year to that domain’s registration period.

- After the credited year, renewal is charged at the applicable standard price.
- A credit cannot be used to renew a domain that is already registered at WordPress.com.
Before selecting a plan, confirm whether the checkout labels the domain as a new registration or a transfer and note the date on which the first paid renewal will occur.
Should you connect your domain or transfer it?
WordPress.com summarizes the distinction this way: “Connect to keep your current registrar; transfer to consolidate everything in one place.” Connecting changes where the domain points. Transferring changes where the domain registration is managed.
Connect: keep the registrar where it is
When you connect a domain, it stays registered with the provider you already use, while its DNS or nameserver settings point visitors to the WordPress.com site. WordPress.com says a domain from another provider can be connected for free with any paid plan.
Choose connection when:
- you already paid for a registration period and do not want to move it;
- your organization has a central registrar account that must remain in control;
- you want to use the WordPress.com site quickly without waiting for a transfer;
- you prefer to keep domain billing and hosting billing separate.
Depending on the domain’s current nameserver setup, you may need to change DNS records or nameservers at the existing registrar. The exact records depend on that provider’s configuration, so copy the values WordPress.com displays for your site rather than guessing.

Transfer: move registration to WordPress.com
A transfer moves the domain registration and its management relationship to WordPress.com. Domain billing, renewal settings, and the site plan can then be administered in one WordPress.com account, subject to the account’s ownership permissions.
Choose transfer when:
- you want one dashboard for domain and WordPress.com plan administration;
- you are comfortable moving renewal responsibility away from the current registrar;
- an eligible annual, two-year, or three-year plan credit can cover the transfer and an added year;
- you have enough time for the transfer process before a launch deadline.
WordPress.com says an incoming transfer typically takes 5–7 days. A transfer does not move your site’s content. If the domain must work sooner, connect it first and consider transferring afterward.
How to connect an externally registered domain
- Confirm the plan requirement: use a paid WordPress.com plan that supports a custom primary domain.
- Open domain management: in the WordPress.com dashboard, use the domain-management area and choose the option to add or connect a domain.
- Enter the domain exactly: type the registered name without inventing a different extension or spelling.
- Review the displayed DNS instructions: WordPress.com will indicate whether your setup requires nameserver changes or specific DNS records.
- Sign in to the current registrar: make the requested DNS change there. Do not cancel the registration at that provider.
- Wait for DNS propagation and verification: keep the existing settings available until WordPress.com confirms the connection.
- Set the primary address: after verification, select the custom domain as the site’s primary domain in WordPress.com’s domain settings.
Because the registration remains external, renewals, payment details, transfer locks, and registrar contact information continue to be handled by that outside provider.
How to transfer a domain to WordPress.com
- Check eligibility and ownership: make sure you control the domain-owner account and that the domain is eligible to transfer.
- Review the financial terms: determine whether your new annual, two-year, or three-year plan supplies the one-year transfer credit. Without a qualifying credit, WordPress.com says the standard renewal cost applies; free sites and monthly plans do not receive the credit.
- Start the transfer in WordPress.com: open domain management, choose transfer, and follow the account-specific instructions.
- Authorize the move at the current registrar: provide any authorization code or approval requested by the existing provider.
- Keep the domain active during the process: do not let the registration expire while the transfer is pending.
- Allow the normal transfer window: WordPress.com says a typical incoming transfer takes 5–7 days.
- Verify the result: once complete, check the new domain owner, renewal date, DNS settings, and primary-domain setting in WordPress.com.
If the site needs the domain before the transfer finishes, connect it first. The connection and transfer are separate operations; completing one does not automatically complete the other.
What a domain transfer does—and does not—move
A transfer moves registration management. It does not copy WordPress.com pages, posts, images, files, comments, or other site content. Content migration is a separate project with its own export and import decisions.

This distinction matters when changing owners or providers. Keep a record of:
- the domain registrar and domain-owner account;
- the WordPress.com site owner and plan-owner account;
- the current DNS or nameserver configuration;
- the content location and any separate backups or exports.
Changing one of these relationships does not automatically change the others.
Ownership, billing, and cancellation traps
Different accounts can own different things
WordPress.com distinguishes the site owner, plan owner, and domain owner. The domain owner controls domain renewal, cancellation, and transfer. The plan owner controls plan billing, renewal, and cancellation. Those roles can belong to different accounts.

For a business, document these roles before a staff member leaves or a contractor finishes work. A person who can edit the site is not necessarily the person who can renew its domain.
Canceling the plan does not instantly erase a registered domain
WordPress.com says canceling the qualifying plan does not automatically mean the customer loses the already-registered domain immediately. The domain can be kept for the rest of its registration period, subject to the applicable refund rules. The domain still needs renewal later if you want to keep it beyond that paid period.
Check renewal dates separately
A plan renewal date and a domain renewal date may differ, especially when the domain was registered elsewhere or transferred at another time. Put both dates on the same calendar and verify which account receives renewal notices.
Decision framework: choose in five questions
- Does the address need to represent a durable brand? If yes, choose a custom domain. If no, the free address may be sufficient.
- Do you already own a domain? If yes, connect it to retain the registrar relationship, or transfer it only if consolidated management is more valuable.
- Do you need one account for hosting and registration? If yes, registering or transferring at WordPress.com provides that administrative simplicity.
- Can you accept a recurring domain renewal? If not, remain with the free address rather than treating a first-year credit as permanent.
- Is the launch date less than a week away? Connect first if necessary; a transfer may take the typical 5–7 days.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing a plan credit with permanent ownership: record the first paid renewal date and expected domain renewal amount.
- Using “connect” and “transfer” interchangeably: connection leaves registration external; transfer moves registration to WordPress.com.
- Expecting a transfer to move website content: plan a separate content migration if the site itself is moving.
- Canceling the wrong account: identify the domain owner and plan owner before changing billing.
- Changing DNS without saving the old settings: document current records so you can recover email or other services if a record was omitted.
- Waiting for a transfer during a launch: connect the domain first when timing matters.
- Comparing only the first-year total: compare the plan renewal and domain renewal costs over the period you expect to operate the site.
What should you choose?
Choose the free .wordpress.com address when the project is experimental, temporary, or intentionally platform-branded and you do not need a separately registered name. Choose a custom domain when the site is a business, portfolio, publication, community, or other identity you expect to keep and promote.

Transfer it when centralized registration and billing at WordPress.com are worth the administrative change and the typical 5–7-day wait. In either case, budget for recurring domain renewal, keep ownership roles explicit, and remember that domain control is separate from site-content control.
