Updated October 15, 2026: A WordPress block theme lets you edit the entire site with blocks—not just the text inside posts and pages. With a compatible theme active, Appearance > Editor opens the Site Editor, where you can change global styles, navigation, headers, footers, templates, and reusable layouts without editing PHP files.
Block themes were introduced in WordPress 5.9. They are a good fit when editors want visual control over the site structure; classic themes remain more suitable for sites that depend on PHP templates, widgets, the Customizer, or traditional theme APIs.

What a WordPress block theme changes
In a classic WordPress theme, the block editor mainly controls post and page content. The theme supplies the surrounding structure through PHP templates, widget areas, menus, Customizer settings, CSS, and theme-specific options.
A block theme extends block editing to that surrounding structure. Headers, footers, navigation menus, page layouts, archive views, search results, 404 pages, and other site areas are assembled from blocks. WordPress describes the model as a theme that uses blocks for all parts of a site, including navigation menus, header, content, and site footer.

The practical scope
- Site-wide styles: Set colors, typography, spacing, layout defaults, and block-specific styling in one interface.
- Templates: Define the layout used by a page type, such as a single post, an archive, search results, or a 404 page.
- Template parts: Reuse structural regions such as a header, footer, or sidebar across several templates.
- Navigation: Build and maintain menus with the Navigation block rather than a traditional menu screen alone.
- Patterns: Save reusable sections or layouts for insertion into pages and templates.
Widgets are replaced by blocks in the block-theme workflow. The Customizer is generally unavailable, although a plugin or a particular theme can activate it. The Site Editor is available only when a block theme is active.
How to install and activate a block theme
Use a test site or staging copy before changing a production site. A template or global-style change can affect many URLs at once, so testing gives you a place to check mobile layouts, menus, forms, and dynamic content.

- Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New.
- Choose the Block Themes filter to browse compatible themes in the official WordPress directory.
- Select a theme, review its details, and choose Install.
- After installation finishes, choose Activate.
- Open Appearance > Editor. If the Editor entry is missing, confirm that the active theme is a block theme and that your user account can manage the site.
Activating a theme does not automatically rewrite every page. The theme supplies templates and style defaults, while your saved Site Editor changes become the active customizations for the areas you edit.
Learn the Site Editor in the order you will use it
The Site Editor is the main workspace for a block theme. Its sidebar provides access to site identity, Styles, Pages, Navigation, Patterns, and Templates. Names and screen details can change as WordPress evolves, but the following areas describe the core workflow.
Styles: set the visual system
Open Appearance > Editor > Styles to control the visual rules used across the site. Depending on the theme, you can set global colors, typography, layout dimensions, spacing, and block-specific styles.
- Colors: Choose the site palette, background and text colors, gradients, and other available color options.
- Typography: Set font families, sizes, line height, letter spacing, and text appearance where the theme exposes those controls.
- Layout: Define content width, wide width, padding, and spacing defaults.
- Blocks: Apply focused rules to individual block types, such as buttons, headings, links, images, or navigation.
Style changes can be made while viewing a template or template part. A global rule is useful for consistency; a block-level rule is useful when one component needs a deliberate exception.

Check the menu in both the desktop and mobile states supplied by the theme. A menu that looks correct in the editor can still need testing for long labels, nested items, keyboard access, and the mobile overlay or toggle behavior provided by the theme.
Templates: control page-type layouts
Templates determine how WordPress lays out a class of content. Typical entries include:
- Single posts
- Pages
- Archives and category or tag listings
- Search results
- 404 pages
To edit one, open Appearance > Editor > Templates, select the page type, and edit its blocks. You can also create a custom template when the theme and your site structure require a layout beyond the supplied choices.
A template change is broad by design: every post or page using that template receives the change. The version saved in the editor takes precedence over the template file bundled with the theme. This lets you customize a theme without modifying its files, but it also means a saved customization can remain in place when the theme later updates its bundled template.
Template parts: reuse structural regions
Template parts are reusable structural areas, most often headers, footers, and sidebars. Edit a part from the relevant template or from the template-parts area in the editor. When a template includes that part, it displays the same saved version.
Use a template part for an element that should stay structurally consistent across multiple page types. For example, put the logo, primary navigation, search control, and utility links in a header part rather than rebuilding them separately in every template.
Because a part is shared, changing it can affect every template that includes it. If one landing page needs a different header, create or assign a separate part instead of changing the global header unintentionally.

Patterns: save reusable sections
Patterns are reusable arrangements of blocks for content or layout sections. Examples include a call-to-action band, a feature grid, a testimonial section, or a page-introduction block group.
Since WordPress 6.3, patterns and template parts can be managed from the Site Editor sidebar. Theme-supplied patterns are provided by the theme and may be locked. Duplicate a locked theme pattern to create an editable copy. User patterns can be edited, renamed, duplicated, exported as JSON, or deleted, and patterns can also be imported from JSON.
The distinction is useful:
- Template part: A repeated structural region such as a header or footer.
- Pattern: A reusable content or layout section that editors can insert into pages or templates.
Editing the header and footer
Headers and footers are normally template parts, so you do not need to open each page individually.
- Go to Appearance > Editor.
- Open Patterns or the template-part area, depending on the interface presented by your WordPress version and theme.
- Select the header or footer part.
- Use the block editor to add, remove, or rearrange blocks. Common choices include Site Logo, Site Title, Navigation, Search, Social Icons, and Paragraph blocks.
- Check the block toolbar and sidebar for alignment, spacing, visibility, and responsive options supplied by the theme.
- Choose Save, review the list of affected areas, and confirm the save.
Return to a representative post, page, archive, and 404 view to check the result. If a header is missing on one page type, inspect that template: it may use a different header part or may not include a header part at all.
Creating and modifying templates safely
Templates are powerful because they replace repeated manual layout work. They also have the largest blast radius. Before editing, identify which content uses the template and note any existing customizations.
Change a supplied template
- Open Appearance > Editor > Templates.
- Select the page type you want to change.
- Edit the block structure, query or post-content areas, metadata, and spacing.
- Preview more than one item that uses the template, including an item with a long title and one with missing or short content.
- Save and confirm the affected template.
Create a custom template
Use a custom template when a specific page type needs a layout that should not replace the default for the whole site. Give it a clear name, build the required blocks, and assign it only where needed through the page or post settings. Keep the assignment documented so another editor understands why that page does not use the standard template.
Understand saved editor versions
The editor stores your customization separately from the theme’s bundled template file. That saved version takes precedence. If you want to return to the theme’s original design, use the available reset or revert control for the template or style, rather than assuming that switching away and back will remove the customization.

Using patterns for a maintainable content system
A pattern is most useful when it represents a repeatable editorial decision, not merely a random group of blocks. Name patterns by purpose—for example, “Three-column features” or “Article callout”—so editors can find them later.

- Keep global structural elements in template parts.
- Keep campaign, marketing, and editorial sections in patterns.
- Duplicate a locked theme pattern before changing it.
- Export important user patterns as JSON when you need a portable backup or want to move the arrangement to another site.
- Review imported JSON before using it on a production site, especially when it contains links, images, or custom classes.
If a pattern should remain synchronized everywhere, use it in a way that preserves its shared behavior when your WordPress version and pattern settings support that choice. If editors need to customize each insertion independently, use a regular pattern insertion instead of treating it as a globally locked component.
What theme.json does
For developers and advanced site builders, theme.json is the central configuration file for editor settings and global styles. It helps a theme declare what controls appear in the editor and how those controls behave on the front end.
What it can configure
- Settings: Enable or disable color, typography, spacing, layout, and other editor controls.
- Styles: Define default and block-specific visual rules.
- Design tokens: Supply palettes, gradients, duotone filters, font families, and font sizes.
- Custom properties: Add custom CSS properties that support a consistent design system.
- Template metadata: Describe custom templates and template parts.
- Patterns: Register patterns that the theme makes available.
Documented top-level areas include settings, styles, customTemplates, templateParts, and patterns. A minimal illustrative structure looks like this:
{
"settings": {},
"styles": {},
"customTemplates": [],
"templateParts": [],
"patterns": []
}
This is a structural example, not a complete production configuration. Direct editing requires basic JSON and CSS familiarity. Invalid JSON can prevent settings from loading as intended, and a technically valid value can still produce poor contrast, awkward spacing, or controls that editors do not understand. Make changes in a development or staging copy and keep a versioned backup of the file.
Recommended Free Tools
Because theme.json can influence both the editor and the front end, it is the right place to express a theme-wide design system. Use the Site Editor for routine editorial adjustments and code for settings that should be consistent across every installation of the theme.
Block themes versus classic themes
| Decision axis | Block theme | Classic theme |
|---|---|---|
| Site-wide editing | Blocks in the Site Editor can edit headers, footers, navigation, templates, and styles. | Primarily PHP templates, widgets, menus, and Customizer workflows. |
| User workflow | Visual editing from Appearance > Editor. | Traditional theme settings and template-file workflows. |
| Best fit | Users who want direct control of the whole site and are comfortable with the block editor. | Sites or teams that depend on classic PHP, widget, Customizer, or theme-API behavior. |
| Development model | HTML block templates plus configuration such as theme.json. |
PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and classic theme APIs. |
Neither model is automatically better for every site. Choose a block theme when visual control of the complete site is the priority and your plugins work with the block editor. Stay with a classic theme when a business-critical workflow depends on a widget area, Customizer panel, PHP override, or theme-specific feature that has no block-theme equivalent.

Moving from a classic theme to a block theme
Treat migration as a design and compatibility project rather than a simple theme switch.
- Inventory the current site: Record menus, widget areas, Customizer settings, custom templates, sidebars, theme-specific shortcodes, and PHP changes.
- List plugin dependencies: Confirm that forms, commerce features, memberships, analytics, and other important plugins render correctly with blocks and Site Editor templates.
- Clone the site: Work on staging or a separate test installation.
- Activate the candidate theme: Review the generated templates before making large edits.
- Rebuild the shell: Create the header, footer, navigation, archive, single-content, search, and 404 experiences.
- Replace widgets: Recreate required widget content with blocks or an appropriate plugin-supported block.
- Reapply global styles: Set typography, colors, widths, spacing, and button treatment in Styles or through the theme’s configuration.
- Test content variations: Check long titles, galleries, embeds, tables, comments, author information, empty search results, and missing images.
- Test responsive behavior and accessibility: Use keyboard navigation, zoom, small screens, and contrast checks.
- Deploy deliberately: Back up the production site, schedule the change, and compare key URLs after activation.
Some classic-theme settings have no automatic one-to-one translation. Preserve the old theme and its configuration until the replacement has been verified, but do not continue editing both versions in parallel after the migration begins; that makes it difficult to identify which setting controls the live result.

“Appearance > Editor” is missing
Confirm that a block theme is active. The Site Editor is not provided by a classic theme. If the correct theme is active, check your user capability and whether a plugin or site configuration is altering the dashboard menu.
A change appears on every page
You probably edited a shared template or template part. Inspect the affected templates and decide whether the change belongs globally. For a one-off layout, create a separate custom template or use a page-level pattern instead of modifying the shared part.
The theme update did not change the design
A saved Site Editor version takes precedence over the theme’s bundled template. Review the template’s saved customization and reset or revise it if you want to adopt the updated theme structure.
A locked pattern cannot be edited
Duplicate the theme-supplied pattern, then edit the duplicate. Locked patterns are intended to remain controlled by the theme; a user copy gives you an editable version.
The header or footer is different on one template
Open the outlying template and inspect its template-part block. It may reference a different part or have its own blocks instead of the shared header or footer. Replace it with the intended part, then test the page type again.
The editor and front end do not look identical
Check the theme’s style configuration, block-specific rules, custom CSS, responsive settings, and plugin output. Dynamic blocks can also render content differently when viewed outside the editor. Test the published page at the relevant screen sizes rather than relying solely on the editor preview.
A theme.json change has no effect
Validate the JSON syntax, confirm that the property is supported by your WordPress version and theme, and check whether a saved Site Editor style overrides the bundled setting. Make one controlled change at a time so you can identify whether the issue is syntax, precedence, or unsupported configuration.
Quick Recap
A practical operating routine for editors
- Use a staging or test site for theme changes, template experiments, and
theme.jsonedits. - Make global style changes before styling individual blocks so local exceptions do not multiply.
- Use template parts for repeated shell elements and patterns for reusable content sections.
- After editing a template, test at least one representative URL for every content type that uses it.
- Review the save confirmation so you know whether you changed a template, a template part, a pattern, or a global style.
- Keep a record of custom templates and their assigned pages.
- Export important user patterns as JSON and retain backups of development configuration.
- When a plugin adds its own blocks or templates, test those blocks after changing the site-wide styles.
Key points to remember
- Block themes make the site shell editable with blocks, not only post content.
- Activate a block theme before looking for Appearance > Editor.
- Use Styles for global design rules, Navigation for menus, Templates for page-type layouts, Template Parts for repeated structure, and Patterns for reusable sections.
- Template edits apply to every item using that template, while a saved editor version takes precedence over the theme’s bundled file.
theme.jsoncontrols editor settings and global styles for advanced builders who are comfortable with JSON and CSS.- Block themes began with WordPress 5.9, and interface details continue to evolve.
