Make accessibility a requirement for every WordPress template, block, plugin, and piece of content—not a last-minute overlay. Start with an accessibility-ready theme, then verify semantic structure, alternative text, contrast, keyboard operation, forms, responsive text, and assistive-technology behavior on the actual site you publish. Automated scans can find many defects, but only a combination of code inspection, keyboard testing, and assistive-technology checks gives you useful evidence about accessibility.

What WordPress accessibility covers

An accessible WordPress site can be used by people with different visual, hearing, motor, cognitive, and speech abilities, including visitors who use screen readers, screen magnification, voice control, switch devices, captions, or keyboard navigation. Accessibility is not a single setting in the dashboard. It is the combined result of your theme, templates, blocks, plugins, custom code, media, editorial choices, and the browser or assistive technology a visitor uses.

  • Content: Headings, link text, image descriptions, captions, transcripts, language, instructions, and error messages must communicate their meaning without relying on color, shape, position, or sound alone.
  • Code and structure: Pages need valid, semantic HTML, correctly associated labels, logical landmarks, sensible heading levels, and ARIA only where native HTML cannot express the behavior.
  • Interaction: Every link, button, menu, dialog, carousel, picker, and form must be reachable and operable without a mouse, with a predictable focus order and a visible focus indicator.
  • Presentation: Text must remain readable when enlarged or reflowed; meaningful controls need adequate contrast; content must not be clipped at narrow widths or high zoom.
  • Compatibility: The result must expose useful names, roles, states, and changes to browsers and assistive technologies.

Fixing only one layer—for example, installing a toolbar that changes color contrast—cannot repair unlabeled form controls, a keyboard trap, missing headings, or inaccessible markup emitted by a page builder.

Which standard should a WordPress site target?

WordPress’s coding guidance names Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA as the target for integrated WordPress code. WordPress.org says it aims to make the administration interface and bundled themes fully conformant with WCAG 2.2 AA where possible. The U.S. Department of Justice explains that inaccessible web content can deny people with disabilities equal access to information, goods, services, and privileges offered online, and identifies WCAG and Section 508 as useful technical references.

Those statements do not create a universal legal safe harbor. Whether a particular business, school, nonprofit, or government service has obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 508, state law, or another country’s rules depends on the entity, service, and jurisdiction. A theme label, plugin, audit report, or accessibility statement cannot promise legal compliance. Treat WCAG 2.2 AA as an engineering and quality target, then obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice when the consequences warrant it. The DOJ web-accessibility guidance cited here is dated March 18, 2022; WordPress’s accessibility-guidelines page was updated October 13, 2026.

Plan accessibility before you build

The WordPress Theme Handbook recommends putting accessibility in the project specification from the start. Add it to design reviews, content workflows, acceptance criteria, and release checklists rather than assigning it to a final scan.

  1. Define the audience and journeys. List the tasks visitors must complete—finding an article, buying a product, submitting a contact form, signing in, or watching a video—and include keyboard, screen-reader, zoom, and mobile scenarios.
  2. Set a conformance target. Document WCAG 2.2 Level AA as the technical target, any applicable regulations, and which page types and third-party services are in scope.
  3. Assign ownership. Give named people responsibility for theme code, plugin selection, content review, testing, issue triage, and regression checks.
  4. Build representative test pages. Include a homepage, article, archive, search results, form, logged-in or account page, ecommerce flow if applicable, media-rich page, modal or menu, and the narrowest supported viewport.
  5. Keep an issue log. Record the URL, steps to reproduce, affected users, WCAG criterion when known, severity, owner, fix, and retest result.

Choose and inspect a theme

The accessibility-ready designation is a useful starting filter, not a whole-site certification. The WordPress Accessibility Team explicitly notes that accessibility-ready does not mean a theme meets WCAG at Level AA. WordPress also says it cannot guarantee that every theme is compliant.

What to evaluate Questions to answer in the theme you will deploy
Navigation and landmarks Is there a working “Skip to content” link? Are header, navigation, main, complementary, and footer regions identified without duplicate or misleading landmarks?
Heading structure Does each template have one meaningful page heading, followed by a logical hierarchy that does not jump levels merely to achieve a visual size?
Keyboard focus Can you reach menus, search, account controls, carousels, dialogs, and close buttons with Tab and arrow keys? Is focus visible against every background?
Responsive behavior At high zoom and narrow widths, does text reflow without horizontal scrolling for ordinary content? Are menus and tables still operable?
Forms and dialogs Are labels programmatically associated, instructions discoverable, errors announced and explained, and dialog focus moved in and returned correctly?
Contrast and states Do text, icons, borders, hover states, disabled states, and focus indicators remain distinguishable in the actual color scheme?
Editor output Do blocks and Site Editor patterns preserve semantic elements and accessible names when authors change text, images, columns, or buttons?

Install the theme on a staging site, add your logo and navigation, publish realistic content, and test the resulting pages. A theme can pass a review in isolation yet become inaccessible when a child theme, custom CSS, page builder, font, analytics widget, or plugin changes its output.

Write accessible WordPress content

Use a meaningful heading outline

Start with the page’s purpose in an h1. Use h2 for major sections and h3 for subsections within them. Do not choose a heading only because it looks the right size; adjust appearance with CSS. Keep headings descriptive enough that someone navigating by headings can understand the page without reading every paragraph.

Make links and buttons descriptive

Link text should identify its destination or action: “Download the annual report” is useful, while repeated “Read more” links are ambiguous when heard out of context. If several links lead to different articles, include the article title in each link or provide an accessible name that does so. Use a button for an action such as opening a dialog or submitting a form, and a link for navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write useful alternative text

  • For an informative image, describe the information the image contributes, not every visible detail. A chart needs its key trend or a nearby data table, not merely “line graph.”
  • For a functional image, describe the action: an icon inside a search button may need an accessible name such as “Search.”
  • For a decorative image that adds no information, use an empty alternative-text value so a screen reader can skip it. Do not omit the alt attribute.
  • For images containing essential text, put the text in real HTML when possible and repeat the meaning in nearby content or alternative text.

In the block editor, select an Image block, open its block settings, and enter the alternative text field. Review captions and surrounding copy as well; alternative text is not a substitute for a long description when an image conveys complex data.

Provide captions, transcripts, and audio alternatives

Caption prerecorded video when spoken information or meaningful sounds are present. Provide a transcript for audio and for video when it improves access to the same information. Check that the media player itself can be operated with a keyboard and exposes play, pause, volume, captions, and progress controls to assistive technology.

  • 【Smooth and waterproof surface】: Micro-textured cloth surface, for extremely precise mouse control and a smooth movement. When liquid splashes on the gaming mouse pad, it forms water droplets and slides down. Will not delay your work or gameplay.
  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.

Do not rely on color alone

Pair color with text, icons, patterns, or position. “Fields in red are required” is insufficient if a visitor cannot perceive red. Error messages should identify the field and problem in text, and links should remain distinguishable without requiring color vision.

Make every interaction work without a mouse

Start a keyboard pass with the mouse unplugged or untouched. Press Tab repeatedly and verify that focus follows a logical reading order, never disappears, and never becomes trapped. Use Shift+Tab to move backward, Enter or Space for the expected activation, and arrow keys or Escape where the component’s pattern requires them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Skip link: The first focusable item should let users bypass repeated navigation and reach the main content.
  • Menus: A menu button needs an accessible name and expanded/collapsed state. Opening it must expose its items to the keyboard, and closing it must return focus sensibly.
  • Dialogs: Move focus into an opened dialog, keep it within the dialog while it is modal, provide a labelled heading, support an obvious close action, and return focus to the triggering control.
  • Carousels: Provide buttons to pause, move, and select slides. Do not auto-advance essential content without a pause mechanism, and ensure off-screen slides do not create confusing focus targets.
  • Custom controls: A clickable div is not a keyboard-accessible button. Use native elements first; if a custom widget is unavoidable, implement its keyboard behavior, role, name, value, state, and announcements completely.

Check focus against light and dark sections, sticky headers, cookie notices, and every state of a component. A focus outline that exists in the stylesheet but is hidden behind a fixed header is not practically visible.

Use semantic HTML before ARIA

Native elements carry behavior and semantics that browsers and assistive technologies already understand. Use button, a, label, input, select, fieldset, legend, nav, main, and article where they match the purpose. Add ARIA only to fill a genuine semantic gap, and test the result in the browsers and screen readers your audience uses.

Common failures include adding role="button" to a non-focusable element, assigning duplicate landmark labels, overriding a native role, or setting aria-hidden="true" on content that still receives keyboard focus. An ARIA attribute can expose a state; it cannot supply missing keyboard behavior, visible text, validation logic, or focus management.

Build accessible forms and error handling

  1. Give every control a persistent, visible label. Associate the label with the control’s id; do not use placeholder text as the only label.
  2. Group related controls with fieldset and legend, such as a set of shipping-address or contact-preference choices.
  3. Explain required formats before submission, including date, password, file, and character requirements.
  4. After an invalid submission, identify the problem in text beside the field and in a summary near the form. Move focus to the summary or first invalid field without erasing the user’s entries.
  5. Expose the invalid state programmatically and ensure the error remains available to a screen reader as focus moves.
  6. Confirm success or failure in text; do not rely only on a color change, toast that disappears, or a sound.

Test validation with empty values, malformed values, very long text, keyboard-only input, browser autocomplete, zoom, and a screen reader. A form plugin’s settings page may show labels that are not actually associated in the front-end HTML, so inspect the rendered page.

Check contrast, zoom, and reflow

Review the final color palette, not just design swatches. Verify ordinary text, large text, icons that convey meaning, input borders, button states, links, focus indicators, and other non-text controls. Contrast tools are useful for finding candidates, but inspect real text over gradients, images, hover states, and disabled or selected states.

Increase browser zoom and text size, then test narrow mobile widths. Content should reflow without forcing two-dimensional scrolling for ordinary paragraphs, controls, and headings. Check long words, translated strings, large text settings, dynamic notices, tables, embedded documents, and sticky elements. Make sure CSS does not clip text with fixed heights or hide focus with overflow: hidden.

Allow users to adjust line spacing and letter spacing without losing content or functionality. Respect the browser’s text-size settings and avoid locking the viewport with an arrangement that prevents zoom.

Review plugins, page builders, and custom blocks

The WordPress plugin directory has no general accessibility requirement for plugins. Therefore, “available in the directory” is not evidence that a plugin’s front-end output is accessible. Inspect each plugin that adds forms, pop-ups, menus, sliders, galleries, social feeds, maps, chat, checkout, cookie consent, or account controls.

Inspect Warning signs Preferred evidence
Rendered markup Clickable non-buttons, unlabeled inputs, duplicate IDs, missing headings, or incorrect landmark nesting Valid semantic elements and stable labels in the browser’s accessibility tree
Keyboard behavior Focus skips a widget, becomes trapped, or cannot reach a close or submit control Documented keyboard pattern verified on the live component
Announcements Dynamic results, errors, or dialog changes are silent or repeated confusingly Useful names, roles, states, and status messages tested with assistive technology
Responsive layout Horizontal scrolling, clipped controls, tiny hit areas, or inaccessible hover-only content Successful zoom, reflow, touch, and keyboard checks at supported widths
Maintenance No update history, unresolved accessibility issues, or a widget loaded from an uncontrolled third party Active maintenance, a clear issue process, and a way to test updates before release

Do not assume an overlay or accessibility toolbar repairs the underlying page. Such tools may alter presentation for some visitors while leaving source markup, keyboard logic, focus management, and third-party widgets defective. Remove or replace components that cannot be made operable and understandable in your target environment.

Test in layers

Use several complementary methods. An automated checker is a fast way to find missing labels, suspicious contrast, duplicate IDs, and structural patterns; it cannot judge whether alternative text is meaningful, whether focus order makes sense, or whether a screen-reader announcement is understandable.

  1. Scan representative templates. Run an automated checker on the homepage, article, archive, search, form, account, checkout, modal, and media pages. Record the exact selector and state for each result.
  2. Perform a keyboard-only pass. Start at the browser address bar, use only the keyboard, and complete each critical journey. Check skip links, focus visibility, order, menus, dialogs, validation, and dynamic updates.
  3. Use assistive technology. Test at least one screen reader or other assistive technology with a current supported browser. Navigate by headings and landmarks, read links and form controls, submit errors, open dialogs, and operate media.
  4. Check visual and responsive states. Test zoom, text enlargement, high-contrast or forced-colors settings where relevant, mobile widths, orientation changes, and content with unusually long labels.
  5. Retest after every change. Repeat the affected journey after updates to WordPress core, the theme, plugins, templates, CSS, JavaScript, or content.
Method Finds well Cannot prove by itself
Automated checks Missing or empty labels, some contrast failures, duplicate identifiers, heading and landmark patterns, and certain keyboard issues Meaningful alt text, sensible focus order, understandable instructions, complete widget behavior, or conformance
Keyboard testing Reachability, focus order, visible focus, traps, skip links, and operation without pointer input Whether announcements, names, and descriptions are correct for screen-reader users
Screen reader or other assistive technology Headings, landmarks, names, states, validation, dynamic announcements, and practical task completion Every browser, device, disability, and user configuration
Human content review Clarity, alternative-text usefulness, link purpose, language, captions, and whether color carries meaning All implementation defects hidden in code or uncommon component states

Use scan results as a defect list, not as a certificate. Prioritize issues that block a critical task, affect many pages, or prevent keyboard or assistive-technology access.

Maintain accessibility after launch

Accessibility changes whenever content, dependencies, templates, and integrations change. Add these controls to normal WordPress operations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Review every new page, image, download, video, form, and reusable block before publishing.
  • Run a regression check after core, theme, plugin, page-builder, and JavaScript updates; test updates on staging first when possible.
  • Keep a versioned issue log with owners, priorities, due dates, evidence, and retest dates.
  • Train authors to select heading levels, write alternative text, create descriptive links, add captions, and avoid color-only instructions.
  • Provide a clearly discoverable way for visitors to report barriers, and route reports to someone who can investigate rather than to an unattended mailbox.
  • Publish an accessibility statement that accurately describes your target, known limitations, contact method, and the date of the latest review. Do not claim full compliance unless a qualified evaluation supports that claim.

How to evaluate an accessibility plugin or service

There is no universally “best” WordPress accessibility plugin. A useful choice depends on what your site already does and whether the product fixes source content, adds testing, monitors regressions, or merely changes the visitor’s presentation. Compare candidates using the same questions:

  • Does it fix or expose the actual HTML, keyboard behavior, labels, headings, and focus management?
  • Does it work with your theme, Site Editor or page builder, forms, ecommerce flow, and other plugins?
  • Can you review findings by URL, selector, severity, and WCAG criterion, assign owners, and verify fixes?
  • Does it test mobile reflow, zoom, non-text contrast, dynamic content, dialogs, and screen-reader announcements—or only static markup?
  • What is the update history, support process, browser coverage, and testing evidence?
  • Are claims described as a baseline review, automated detection, assisted remediation, or documented WCAG conformance evaluation?

Prefer tools that help your team correct the underlying theme, template, content, and plugin output. Treat an overlay, statement generator, or automated score as one part of a workflow, never as proof that the whole site is accessible or legally compliant.

Launch checklist

  • Project requirements name WCAG 2.2 Level AA and identify applicable legal obligations.
  • The deployed theme has been checked beyond its accessibility-ready designation.
  • Every template has logical landmarks, a usable skip link, a coherent heading hierarchy, and visible keyboard focus.
  • All links, buttons, menus, dialogs, carousels, and forms work without a mouse.
  • Controls have visible labels and programmatic names; errors identify the field and explain the fix.
  • Informative images have useful alternative text; decorative images have empty alternative text; prerecorded media has captions or transcripts where applicable.
  • Text, controls, focus indicators, and meaningful graphics meet contrast expectations in every state.
  • Pages remain usable when text is enlarged, zoomed, reflowed, or viewed on a narrow screen.
  • Plugins and custom blocks have been inspected in their rendered, interactive states.
  • Representative pages have passed automated, keyboard, assistive-technology, visual, and responsive checks.
  • Open issues have owners and retest dates, and visitors have a working barrier-reporting channel.

An accessible WordPress site is maintained through ordinary design, editorial, development, and release decisions. The theme is only the starting point; the evidence comes from how the complete site performs for people using different ways to perceive and operate it.
