WordPress 7.1 is reasonable to install when your backups, server versions, extensions, and rollback plan are ready. The release, named “Mary Lou,” arrived on August 19, 2026. You can start it from Dashboard > Updates or use the release archive, but a one-click update is not a substitute for testing.
Use this guide to document your current site, verify PHP and database compatibility, test plugins and themes, perform the upgrade in a controlled window, and recover if the site enters maintenance mode or a dependency fails.

WordPress 7.1 (“Mary Lou”) was released on August 19, 2026. Its core database version is 61833. Administrators can update through Dashboard > Updates or obtain the package from the WordPress release archive. The release page links to a Field Guide and developer notes; consult those documents for any feature-specific behavior that affects your theme, plugins, custom code, or integrations.
Whether the update is “safe” is therefore a site-specific question. A current, restorable backup and a tested extension stack matter more than the age of the site or the fact that the update is offered in the dashboard. A brochure site with a maintained theme and a few current plugins has a different risk profile from a store, membership site, newsroom, or application with custom database tables and external APIs.

Record the site before changing anything
Create a short change record before you touch core files. This gives you a comparison point when a problem appears and tells a host or developer exactly what must be restored.
Inventory to capture
- Current WordPress version and whether it is a single site or multisite network.
- PHP version, database engine, database version, web server, and operating-system details available from your host.
- Active theme, child theme, inactive themes, and any theme framework or build process.
- Every active and inactive plugin, including premium or manually uploaded packages.
- Custom code in
functions.php, must-use plugins, snippets, composer packages, drop-ins, and modified core or distributed theme files. - Scheduled tasks, cron implementation, queue workers, and server-level jobs.
- Page, object, opcode, CDN, and browser caching layers, including cache exclusions for logged-in users, carts, checkout, or APIs.
- Payment, shipping, identity, email, analytics, search, CRM, advertising, webhooks, and other third-party integrations.
- Special content types, custom database tables, REST endpoints, XML or JSON feeds, and import/export jobs.
Save screenshots or exported settings where practical. Note the last successful backup and restore test, not merely that a backup plugin reports “complete.”

Back up files and the database—and prove the restore path
Official WordPress guidance says to back up both the database and files before upgrading. The database contains posts, users, settings, orders, and other data; files contain core, plugins, themes, uploads, and custom code. Restoring only one can leave code and data out of sync.
What a usable backup includes
- A complete database export, including custom tables created by plugins.
- The entire WordPress fileset, especially
wp-content, uploads, themes, plugins, must-use plugins, drop-ins, and configuration files. - Server and PHP configuration details needed to recreate the runtime.
- A copy stored separately from the production server or hosting account.
- The exact WordPress, PHP, database, theme, and plugin versions recorded alongside the backup.
Confirm that the backup can be downloaded or accessed independently and that you know who can restore it. For a high-value site, perform a test restore in staging before the change window. A backup that cannot be located, decrypted, or imported in time is not a rollback plan.

Verify PHP and database versions
For new WordPress 7.1 installations, the WordPress Hosting Team recommends PHP 8.4.x or 8.5.x, MySQL 8.4.x, or MariaDB 10.11.x, 11.4.x, or 11.8.x. The stated absolute compatibility floors are PHP 7.4 or newer and MySQL or MariaDB 5.5.5 or newer. Those floors include legacy, end-of-life software; they should not be treated as a security target or a reason to postpone a supported PHP upgrade.

Do not change PHP and WordPress core simultaneously without a reason and a rollback plan. If your host controls PHP, ask which versions are available, how to switch them, and how quickly support can revert the setting. A PHP change can expose deprecated functions or incompatible extensions even when WordPress itself updates correctly.

Core compatibility does not guarantee extension compatibility. Review the changelog, update notice, support statement, and required PHP version for every plugin and theme. Include premium products whose updates occur outside the WordPress dashboard and manually installed packages that may not report an available update.
Prioritize high-risk components
- Checkout, payment, tax, shipping, subscription, and membership components.
- Authentication, role, privacy, security, backup, and caching plugins.
- Page builders, block extensions, multilingual systems, and editor customizations.
- Plugins that add database tables, rewrite rules, scheduled jobs, REST endpoints, or background queues.
- Custom themes, child themes, must-use plugins, snippets, and code copied from older tutorials.
- Integrations that depend on a specific PHP library, API version, webhook signature, or server module.
Replace abandoned extensions or obtain a clear compatibility statement from their author. “It has not been updated recently” is not proof of failure, but it is a reason to test it in staging and prepare an alternative. Keep a list of components that must be updated together, such as a theme and its companion plugin.

Test a staging or local copy before production
A staging clone is the safest place to discover a fatal error, layout regression, failed database upgrade, or broken integration. Refresh it from a recent production backup, restrict search indexing and outbound email, and mask sensitive data where your policy requires it.
Critical journeys to exercise
- Log in as an administrator, editor, and ordinary user; verify roles and capabilities.
- Create, edit, schedule, preview, and publish content, including custom post types.
- Submit every important form and confirm validation, spam controls, notifications, and storage.
- Run a representative cart, checkout, payment, refund, account, and subscription flow if applicable.
- Search for common terms, filter archives, open feeds, and inspect pagination and canonical URLs.
- Upload, resize, serve, and download media; check image processing and protected files.
- Call REST or other APIs used by mobile apps, integrations, JavaScript, or automation.
- Run scheduled events, queues, imports, exports, backups, and cron-triggered notifications.
- Verify email delivery, analytics events, webhooks, cache behavior, and CDN invalidation.
Compare the staging site with production before and after the update. Record errors from PHP, web-server, WordPress, queue, and payment logs. A successful page load alone does not establish that background jobs or business transactions still work.
Choose an upgrade method

Compare options on rollback readiness and restore time, PHP and database support status, plugin and theme compatibility, staging coverage, post-update verification, access to logs, PHP version controls, and support availability. The cheapest method is not the safest if restoring service would take hours.
Perform the WordPress 7.1 update
Use a maintenance window that avoids launches, billing runs, scheduled imports, and peak traffic. Freeze unrelated deployments until verification is complete.

- Create and verify a fresh backup. Confirm both database and files are present, separate from production, and associated with the exact versions you recorded.
- Put operational safeguards in place. Notify stakeholders, pause conflicting jobs if necessary, and make sure you can reach hosting support and server logs.
- Open
Dashboard > Updates. Review the offered WordPress 7.1 package and start the core update. The documented process unpacks and verifies files, installs the new version, and upgrades the database. - Wait for completion. Do not close the browser, deploy another change, or delete files while the updater is working.
- Confirm administration. Sign in again, verify the displayed WordPress version, and complete any database-upgrade prompt. The 7.1 database version is
61833; do not edit database version values manually. - Update extensions in controlled groups. Update related plugins and themes one group at a time, checking the site after each group. Keep the backup current before plugin updates.
- Clear caches selectively. Purge application, object, CDN, or browser caches only when stale assets or cached responses require it. Avoid masking an underlying PHP or application error with repeated purges.
- Run the verification checklist. Test the journeys listed in the staging section, inspect Site Health and logs, and confirm scheduled events, forms, email, search, analytics, and third-party integrations.
What to check immediately after the database upgrade
Open the front end in a private browser session and test both anonymous and authenticated views. Check representative pages rather than only the homepage: an article, archive, search result, media file, form confirmation, account page, and any transaction path.
Operational checks
- Look for PHP fatal errors, warnings promoted to failures, JavaScript console errors, HTTP 4xx/5xx responses, and database errors.
- Review WordPress Site Health, scheduled events, REST responses, rewrite behavior, and permalink resolution.
- Confirm that cache layers are serving the right version to logged-in users and visitors.
- Send a real test email through the configured path and verify delivery, not just a “sent” status.
- Check analytics and conversion events after caches are cleared and consent controls are exercised.
- Monitor resource usage and slow queries during the first busy period after release.
Keep the change record open until normal traffic, scheduled jobs, and support channels show no unresolved regressions. Do not remove the pre-update backup until the retention policy says it is safe.
Recovery when an update fails
The site is stuck in maintenance mode
If a failed update leaves maintenance mode active, the official update documentation says to remove the .maintenance file from the WordPress directory and retry. Use the host file manager or secure shell access, remove only that file, then check the site and logs. If the updater stopped midway, restore the backup or rerun the update only after confirming file integrity.
A plugin or theme causes a fatal error
Use the host’s file access or recovery mode to disable the suspected extension, then inspect its compatibility notice and logs. Do not update a large group of unrelated extensions while diagnosing the failure; changing one variable at a time makes the cause identifiable. Restore the known-good plugin or theme version from your backup when the author has not supplied a compatible release.

PHP was changed and the restore cannot start
If PHP was upgraded as part of the incident, the PHP guidance notes that the host may need to return the site to its prior PHP version before the backup is restored. Ask the host to switch the runtime back, then restore files and database together. After service is stable, plan a separate PHP compatibility project rather than repeating both changes in one window.
You need a full rollback
Rollback requires the matching pre-update database and files, not merely an older copy of WordPress core. Preserve the exact PHP version, database engine, configuration, uploads, plugins, themes, and custom code that existed before the change. Document who authorizes the rollback, the expected restore time, and how you will prevent new orders or content from being written while the old database is restored.

Do not assume a major-version rollback is automatic. Keep the pre-update backup and the configuration needed to restore service, and verify the recovered site before reopening traffic.
Common mistakes that make WordPress upgrades harder
- Backing up only the database: missing plugins, themes, uploads, or configuration can make the database unusable after restore.
- Editing distributed theme or core files: updates can replace those edits. Use a child theme or a maintained custom-code mechanism instead.
- Ignoring inactive extensions: an inactive plugin or theme can still become relevant when reactivated and may contain incompatible code.
- Changing PHP at the same time without a plan: two simultaneous variables complicate diagnosis and may prevent a straightforward restore.
- Testing only the homepage: forms, checkout, cron, email, APIs, and search can fail while pages appear normal.
- Purging every cache first: this can hide whether the problem is stale content or a real application failure.
- Deleting the backup immediately: keep it until post-update traffic and scheduled work have been verified.
Decision checklist before you click Update
- Is WordPress 7.1 required now, and have you read the release Field Guide or developer notes for relevant features?
- Have you recorded WordPress, PHP, database, theme, plugin, custom-code, cron, cache, and integration details?
- Do you have separate, restorable copies of both files and database?
- Is the server on a supported PHP and database branch, or is a separate runtime upgrade required?
- Has every critical plugin, theme, and integration been checked for compatibility?
- Have you tested a staging or local clone using real critical journeys?
- Do you have host access, logs, a maintenance window, and a named rollback decision-maker?
- After updating, will you verify the database prompt, Site Health, logs, forms, email, search, cron, analytics, cache, and transactions?
If any answer is no, postpone the production update until that control exists. If all are yes, proceed through the dashboard in the change window and retain the documented rollback path until the site has completed a normal operating cycle.
