If Word says, “We couldn’t print because there doesn’t seem to be a printer installed,” that does not necessarily mean Windows has no printer. First try printing from another app. If that works, check Word’s printer selection and troubleshoot Word; if it fails there too, check the printer’s connection and Windows availability.
Find out whether the problem is Word or the printer
Open another application, such as a PDF viewer, and try printing to the same printer. This simple check determines where to focus; the message alone does not identify a cause.
- Printing fails in other apps too: Check that the printer is powered on, connected to the computer or network, online, and available to Windows. Resolve that broader connection or availability issue before changing Word.
- Other apps print successfully: The printer can print outside Word, so check Word’s selected printer and then investigate Word-specific settings or application state.
A January 2018 Microsoft Q&A report described a printer that worked in other applications but was not recognized by Word. That example shows why the error should not be treated as proof that no printer is installed; it does not establish a single cause. Read the Microsoft Q&A thread.

Confirm the printer selected in Word
In Word, open the print screen and check the printer shown in the printer selector. Choose the printer you intend to use and confirm it is available, rather than selecting an offline or obsolete printer entry. If you use a virtual printer, such as a PDF printer, select that explicitly when appropriate.

Consider setting a Windows default printer manually
If Word’s selection appears wrong or keeps changing, Windows may be managing the default printer automatically. On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners and turn off Let Windows manage my default printer; then select the intended printer and choose Set as default if that option is shown. The precise labels can vary by Windows version.
This was suggested by a volunteer moderator in a 2018 support thread, but it did not resolve every reported case. Treat it as a targeted check, not a guaranteed fix. See the thread and its proposed default-printer check.

Restart and check for Office updates
Save your work, close Word, reopen it, and test printing again. If that does not help, restart the computer and retry. A user reporting Word 2016 on Windows 10 said a restart restored printing temporarily; that is one anecdotal report, not evidence that restarting fixes the error generally. Read the 2018 Word 2016 report.
Also check for available Office updates through Word’s File > Account > Update Options > Update Now path, if those controls are available in your edition. A 2018 support response connected a reported issue to an old Office build and recommended an update. That historical case is not evidence of a current known defect, but keeping Office up to date is a reasonable next check.

Isolate Word-specific add-ins or background conflicts
If the printer works elsewhere and Word still cannot use it after the checks above, test whether Word itself or software running alongside it is involved. A secondary troubleshooting guide recommends checking Office add-ins and using a clean boot as diagnostic options; it does not establish that either is a common cause or quantify how often these steps work. Test Word without add-ins
Disable Word add-ins temporarily, restart Word, and try printing. If printing works, re-enable add-ins one at a time and test after each change to identify a possible conflict. If it still fails with add-ins disabled, restore your usual add-in settings and move on.

Use a clean boot only if simpler checks fail
A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of startup programs and services, which can help identify interference from background software. It changes how Windows starts, so follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for your Windows version and restore normal startup settings afterward. If printing works only in the clean-boot state, re-enable items methodically rather than leaving startup services disabled indiscriminately.
Repair Office after the lower-impact checks
Office repair is more disruptive than checking the printer selector, restarting, or updating, so reserve it for a Word-only problem that persists. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some versions), select Microsoft 365 or Office, choose Modify, and follow the repair options offered. If both are available, try Quick Repair before Online Repair; the latter may take longer and require an internet connection. The available troubleshooting guidance mentions these options, but does not verify that repair resolves this particular message.

What not to change first
Avoid jumping straight to driver replacement, changing Office from 64-bit to 32-bit, renaming the printer, uninstalling a Windows update, or reinstalling Office. These actions appear in historical user reports or secondary guidance, but the available evidence does not show that they are broadly effective fixes for this error. Renaming a printer reportedly helped one user in one case; that does not establish a general remedy. Reinstalling or making broad system changes before checking scope and printer selection can add work without addressing the actual issue.
What is known about this error
Reports from 2018 describe Word failing to recognize a printer that worked in other applications, and one Word 2016 user reported temporary improvement after restarting. A troubleshooting article updated August 23, 2026 lists steps including checking printer selection, updating Office, testing add-ins, clean boot, and Office repair. These reports and recommendations do not establish a definitive root cause or a measured success rate for any fix. No prevalence statistic for this exact error is established by these sources.
