To change a product’s starting quantity, minimum, maximum, or increment, use WooCommerce’s woocommerce_quantity_input_args filter. For variable-product quantity limits, use woocommerce_available_variation as well. If you want to change how the selector looks, add it to a shop page, or alter Cart and Checkout behavior, use the approach for that specific page and editor: those are separate customizations.
Choose the customization that matches your goal
Quantity rules and quantity-selector appearance are different things. First identify where the input appears, what product type it serves, and whether the store uses classic templates, a block theme, or a page builder.

Set quantity values on product pages
WooCommerce’s quantity input guide documents the woocommerce_quantity_input_args filter. Its arguments include input_value, min_value, max_value, and step. A callback should adjust the arguments to match your store’s rules and return the modified array.

For example, a starting quantity change can be conditional on a single-product page so it does not also change the cart’s starting value. Set the minimum, maximum, and step only when those values reflect the product’s actual purchase rules; sample values should not be treated as universal defaults.

WooCommerce classifies this as developer-level guidance. If you are not comfortable working with PHP or resolving theme conflicts, use a qualified WooCommerce developer.
Variable products need variation limits
For variable products, WooCommerce also documents woocommerce_available_variation, where min_qty and max_qty can be set for each variation. The starting value and step remain controlled through woocommerce_quantity_input_args; setting variation limits alone does not configure those values.

Put custom code somewhere updates will not erase
Add custom PHP to a child theme’s functions.php file or use a plugin mechanism that accepts custom functions. Do not put it directly in the parent theme’s functions.php: WooCommerce warns that a theme update can wipe those changes. Its quantity guide gives placement guidance, and its hooks documentation explains that a filter callback must return the value being filtered.

Add quantity fields to shop and category pages
Shop-loop quantity inputs are a distinct customization from product-page quantity rules. WooCommerce’s loop template guide shows a developer approach using woocommerce_loop_add_to_cart_link and woocommerce_quantity_input(). The documented example is limited to simple products that are purchasable, in stock, and not sold individually; it does not establish a universal solution for every product type or theme.

If you prefer configuration rather than custom code, WooCommerce’s Shop Page Quantity Manager documentation describes options for showing fields across a shop or on selected products and categories. It also describes variable-product attribute selectors, minimums, optional maximums, steps, and stock-aware limits. Confirm the installed extension and version before following its settings, since the exact controls are extension-specific.
Change the selector’s appearance in a block layout
The Single Product block supports two quantity-selector presentations: a numeric input or a stepper with plus and minus buttons. This is a display choice; it does not replace setting quantity rules. See WooCommerce’s Single Product block documentation for the block’s options.

WooCommerce’s documentation says the Add to Cart + Options (Beta) block was introduced in WooCommerce 10.0. Because that release detail and beta status are version-sensitive, check the installed WooCommerce version and the current status of the block before relying on it.
For broader layout changes, block templates and the Site Editor offer one route, while classic themes and page builders use different controls. WooCommerce’s Cart page guide outlines how the editing path depends on the site’s setup.

Check which Cart and Checkout experience your store uses
WooCommerce documents Cart and Checkout blocks as the default for stores started after WooCommerce 8.3, released in November 2023. That does not mean every existing store uses blocks: Cart and Checkout may instead be classic shortcode pages, or be controlled through a page builder. Distinguish the quantity shown in an input from the quantity the cart accepts. When a quantity-rule extension is involved, block Cart and Checkout validation may override product quantity validations when a shopper changes the quantity. The extension’s Product Quantity guide contrasts that behavior with the legacy cart. Check the current extension behavior and the site’s cart type before relying on a displayed minimum or maximum to enforce a rule.

- Test the product page and cart separately if you changed the starting value; a product-page-only condition should avoid changing the cart’s starting value.
- For variable products, check each relevant variation’s minimum and maximum, as well as the shared starting-value and step behavior.
- On shop and category pages, check simple products against the documented eligibility conditions before expecting the quantity field to appear.
- In Cart and Checkout, verify both the displayed control and what happens after a shopper changes the quantity, especially when an extension supplies quantity rules.
- If the field is missing or behaves differently than expected, confirm the product type, editor or template, installed extension, and WooCommerce version before changing code.
