To create a WooCommerce product lightbox, first check which gallery your product page uses. In a block-based product template, select the Product Gallery block and enable Open pop-up when clicked. In the classic gallery, full-screen viewing depends on theme support, so there may be no universal WooCommerce setting to switch on.
First identify the product gallery in your template
WooCommerce has two similarly named gallery blocks, and the setting you need depends on which one appears in the single-product template. The Product Gallery block has its own pop-up and zoom settings; the classic gallery’s full-screen and zoom behavior depends on the theme. See WooCommerce’s product page customization documentation for the distinction.
In a block theme, open the single-product template in the site editor and select the gallery in use. If the block’s settings include Open pop-up when clicked, use the block setup below. If you see the classic Product Image Gallery block, or the page is rendered by a classic theme template, use the classic-gallery guidance instead.

Enable the lightbox in the Product Gallery block
- In WordPress, open the site editor and edit the single-product template used by your store.
- Select the Product Gallery block in that template. Confirm it is not the classic Product Image Gallery block.
- In the block’s media settings, turn on Open pop-up when clicked. WooCommerce documents this setting as enabled by default; if it is already on, save the template only if you made other changes.
- Check Zoom while hovering if you also want magnification when a shopper hovers over an image. WooCommerce documents this as enabled by default as well.
- Save the template, then open a product page as a shopper. Click the main image, move between gallery items, and close the pop-up using its close button or the Escape key. Test tapping and swiping on a phone or tablet you expect customers to use.
The pop-up presents a full-screen gallery, not just a larger copy of one image. The controls and touch behavior should be checked on your own store because a custom template or theme can affect the experience. See the official Product Gallery block documentation for its settings.

What to do with the classic product gallery
For the classic gallery, full-screen viewing and zoom are theme-dependent. WooCommerce describes changes to the classic gallery’s zoom, full-screen view, or slider as theme customization rather than a universal core setting. Check the theme’s documentation and any template overrides before adding a plugin; if the theme does not provide the behavior you want, assess an extension or ask a developer to customize the gallery. Prepare product images for a useful full-screen view
WooCommerce recommends product images of at least 800 × 800 pixels. A larger source image can preserve more fine detail when shown in a large view. Add the main product image and any additional gallery images in the product editor, then inspect them on the storefront at the size shoppers will see. The recommendation is in WooCommerce’s product image and gallery guide; it is not a guarantee that every image will look sharp at every screen size.

When an extension is worth considering
Use an extension when the built-in block or theme behavior does not meet a specific requirement. Choose based on the feature you need, where it should appear, and whether it works with your theme or template. The two documented options below offer different controls; verify current compatibility and terms before installing or purchasing. Avoid running overlapping gallery scripts without first checking that they work together.

If clicking the image does not open a full-screen view
- The pop-up option is missing: Confirm the selected block is the Product Gallery block, not the classic Product Image Gallery block. If the template uses the classic gallery, look for theme support rather than a block setting.
- The option is enabled but nothing opens: Save the template and test a product page on the storefront. Check whether the page uses a different template or a theme override than the one you edited.
- The classic gallery has no lightbox: Check the theme’s gallery features and documentation. WooCommerce does not provide one universal core control for changing the classic gallery’s full-screen behavior.
- The overlay opens but images look soft: Check the source image dimensions and use images at least 800 × 800 pixels, as WooCommerce recommends. Larger originals can retain more fine detail.
- Mobile interaction differs: Test on the actual device and theme combination. The product gallery supports touch interaction in its full-screen view, but custom-template behavior should be verified on the store itself.
- An extension conflicts with the gallery: Check whether the theme or block already supplies zoom or a lightbox, then verify the extension’s compatibility before enabling overlapping gallery features.
