A WooCommerce store is ready to launch only after a complete customer journey works: products display correctly, payments succeed and fail predictably, tax and shipping calculate for the regions you serve, emails arrive, and an order is recorded in the dashboard. Use the checklist below as a launch gate, then switch your payment gateway and storefront out of test or Coming soon mode deliberately.

1. Confirm the catalogue is ready

The official WooCommerce setup sequence starts with products because every later test depends on a correct catalogue. Review the storefront as a shopper, not only in the editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Publish each product that should be available at launch. Draft or private products will not be purchasable by customers.
  • Check the selling price, sale price (if used), currency display and decimal formatting on the product page and cart.
  • Open every product image at full size. Confirm the main image, gallery order, alt text and any variation images represent the item accurately.
  • Verify stock status and quantity. A product intended to be available must not appear out of stock, while a deliberately unavailable item should not be orderable.
  • For variable products, select each variation and confirm its price, image, stock state and purchasability.
  • Read the product title, description and key attributes on a phone-sized viewport as well as a desktop screen. Fix truncated or misleading information before accepting payments.

Record the final catalogue count and a short list of products used for testing. Keeping the same test products makes it easier to compare results after a plugin or theme change.

2. Put payments through the complete customer path

Connect at least one payment method and test both the shopper experience and the order result in WooCommerce. Payment settings are normally under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments; extension labels can differ by release.

Verify the gateway configuration

  • Use the gateway’s test or sandbox mode while validating the store. A test-mode card order follows the same checkout path as a real card order but does not charge the card.
  • Confirm the business or merchant account attached to the gateway is the intended one.
  • Before launch, switch the gateway to live mode and confirm that payouts are routed to the correct bank account. Do not assume a successful test transaction proves the live account is correct.
  • Check the currency and accepted card or wallet methods against the countries you plan to serve.

Test success and failure separately

  1. Place a successful test payment and note what the shopper sees after submission: the confirmation page, order number and payment status.
  2. Open the resulting order in the WooCommerce dashboard. Confirm the status is the one your fulfilment process expects and that the amount, billing details and line items match checkout.
  3. Use the gateway’s documented declined-payment test value to force a failure. The checkout must remain safe, return the customer to a usable state and show a clear explanation without exposing sensitive gateway data.
  4. Check that the failed attempt does not create a falsely paid order or send a fulfilment notification.

WooPayments displays only test data while its test mode is enabled and shows an administrator notice reminding you that the environment is not live. Treat that notice as a launch blocker: remove test mode only after the successful and failed paths pass.

3. Configure and test sales tax

Choose your tax approach under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax and connect any tax service required by your business. WooCommerce Tax can calculate tax at checkout, but it does not file returns or decide where your business has a tax obligation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requirements for WooCommerce Tax

  • Complete the store address, including the country and the state or province fields that apply to your location.
  • Connect the site to WordPress.com as required by the service.
  • Check that product tax status and tax class choices match the goods you sell. A calculator cannot correct an incorrect classification.

Run address-based checks

For a US store, place one checkout using a customer address in the same state as the store address. Then test an out-of-state address. A $0 tax result for the second address can be expected when no additional rate applies; it is not automatically evidence that the calculator is broken. Review the returned rate against the rules that apply to your business and products.

If you sell outside your home country, separately verify VAT, GST or other applicable rules. The tax feature calculates according to its configuration; it does not determine your legal registration, collection or filing duties. Obtain jurisdiction-specific advice from the relevant authority or a qualified tax professional.

Built-in calculator versus another tax service

Question WooCommerce Tax Third-party tax service
Initial connection Requires a complete store address and a WordPress.com connection. Requirements depend on the provider and its extension.
Checkout calculation Calculates tax at checkout from configured rates and address data. Usually calculates from the provider’s rate database and settings.
Returns and filing Does not file returns or determine where you owe tax. Filing, registration and compliance features vary; confirm them with the provider.

4. Make shipping rates predictable

Shipping is correct only when a customer in every served region sees the intended methods and price. In WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping, review the store location, shipping destinations, zones and methods.

  • Confirm the base store location and the countries or regions to which you actually ship.
  • Inspect each shipping zone in order. A customer should match one intended zone rather than a broad fallback that hides a more specific rate.
  • Check the displayed method names and prices, including handling charges and local pickup where offered.
  • Enter sample addresses from every region served. Verify that the correct options appear, that unavailable regions are rejected clearly and that the amount shown at checkout matches the configured rate.
  • For free shipping, test a cart below the threshold, exactly at the threshold and above it. Confirm the free method appears only when the qualifying amount is reached.

Use a test product with a realistic weight or dimensions when your carrier extension calculates rates from those values. A zone can be configured correctly while a missing product dimension still produces an unusable quote.

5. Place the WooCommerce test order that gates launch

A complete test order exercises browsing, cart, checkout, payment, notifications and the administrator’s order record. Test orders can also appear in WooCommerce analytics and reveal integration problems that a settings review will miss.

  1. Use a private browser window or a separate test customer account so saved addresses and sessions do not hide checkout problems.
  2. Start on the public product page. Add the chosen product to the cart and change quantity or variation if those controls are available.
  3. Review the cart totals, then proceed to checkout. Enter a real-looking test name, email address, billing address and one of the sample shipping addresses from each region you intend to serve.
  4. Choose the shipping method that should be offered for that address. Recheck the tax, shipping and grand totals before paying.
  5. Submit the order with the gateway’s documented test payment details. Confirm the browser reaches the expected confirmation page rather than looping back to checkout.
  6. Open the order in the WooCommerce admin. Match the order number, customer data, line items, taxes, shipping charge, total and payment status to what the customer saw.
  7. Check the customer’s confirmation email and the administrator notification. Verify the sender address, subject, order details, totals and links, and make sure messages are not landing in spam.
  8. Review any connected fulfilment, inventory or accounting integration using the test order. A successful payment is not enough if a downstream system receives the wrong status or amount.
  9. Repeat the checkout with a forced payment failure. Confirm the error is understandable and that the order is not marked paid.

Manual test mode or the Test Orders extension?

Method What it exercises Important limitation
Gateway test mode The normal checkout and gateway flow using non-production payment data. Requires the gateway’s test credentials or card values; no real charge is made.
Test Orders extension Creates an order for checkout and workflow testing without processing a real payment. Requires WooCommerce 5.0.0 or later; it is an optional extension, not a substitute for verifying the live gateway configuration.

After the sandbox checks pass, a cautious final verification is to make one small real purchase and refund it. This confirms that money can move into the intended account and back out through the refund path; treat it as an operational check rather than a replacement for the test-mode suite.

  • Open the order from a logged-out browser to ensure customer-facing links do not expose another customer’s information.

7. Secure the site and preserve a recovery point

These are prudent pre-launch controls commonly included in store setup checklists, although the WooCommerce setup sequence does not certify a host’s security configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the storefront, checkout and account pages load over HTTPS and that the browser shows a valid certificate.
  • Take a complete backup of the database and files before switching live settings or updating extensions. Store the backup somewhere independent of the production site and verify that it can be located for restoration.
  • Record the versions of WordPress, WooCommerce, the active theme and payment, tax and shipping extensions. This inventory makes a later rollback or support request faster.

WooCommerce’s launch checklist does not establish privacy-law compliance. If you serve jurisdictions with privacy, cookie or data-processing requirements, review the applicable regulator guidance or consult a qualified privacy professional before launch.

8. Decide what happens to Coming soon mode

Coming soon mode controls whether the public can browse and purchase. Decide explicitly when the launch order has passed.

  • Leave Coming soon enabled if you still need to fix catalogue, payment, tax or shipping issues, or if customers should not place orders yet.
  • Switch it off only after the live payment gateway, payout account and customer-facing pages are ready. Open the public URL in a logged-out browser and place a live smoke test if your process allows it.
  • Record the exact time and person who changed the mode so support staff know when orders became legitimate.

9. Launch-day sequence

Use this order to avoid exposing a half-configured checkout:

  1. Confirm the backup exists and the final test order has passed.
  2. Switch the payment gateway from test to live mode and recheck the payout account.
  3. Confirm tax and shipping settings have not changed since testing.
  4. Disable Coming soon mode when the storefront is intentionally open.
  5. Open the public site in a private browser, add a product and proceed far enough to verify that live prices, shipping and payment choices appear.
  6. Watch the first real order through the customer email, administrator notification and WooCommerce order record before beginning fulfilment.

If any live check fails, disable purchasing or restore Coming soon mode, capture the order number and error text, and correct the configuration before accepting another customer order.
