When WooCommerce does not send an email, first check whether the order reached the status that triggers it, then inspect the transactional email log. An order email can be blocked before WooCommerce tries to send it, fail during mail handoff, or be accepted by the site’s mail system and later filtered or rejected. Those are different problems, so the log result—not the customer’s empty inbox alone—determines the next step.
First, check whether the order should have triggered an email
Open the order and check its status alongside the payment outcome. A Pending Payment order does not trigger the expected order email. A shopper may have abandoned an external payment flow or had a card declined. If payment succeeded but the order remains Pending Payment, investigate why the payment gateway did not update the order status; that is a payment or order-processing issue, not yet an email-delivery issue.
A plugin, theme, or custom-code error can also interrupt order processing before the status change that triggers an email. The expected message depends on the email type and order state: for example, WooCommerce documents the Processing order email after payment and the Completed order email after an order is marked complete.

Confirm the specific email notification is enabled
- In WP Admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Emails.
- Select the notification the customer or store manager expected.
- Check that Enable this email notification is selected. For admin or shop-manager messages, verify the recipient setting is populated and correct.
- Identify whether the missing message is a core WooCommerce notification or one added by an extension; their settings may differ.

Read the transactional email log
Create a test order or trigger the exact notification, then open WooCommerce > Status > Logs and filter for transactional-emails. Interpret the entry as follows:

| Sent | WooCommerce handed the message to the site mail system. It does not prove delivery to the recipient’s inbox. | Check spam and recipient-side filtering, then inspect the SMTP or mail provider’s logs for acceptance, bounce, or rejection. |
| Failed | The mail-sending process returned an error. | Read the returned error and check mailer configuration, credentials, connection, sender authorization, and provider logs. |
| Disabled | The notification is turned off. | Enable that email type in WooCommerce’s Emails settings. |
| Skipped | A required condition was missing, such as a recipient. | Correct the missing condition identified by the log. |
For order-related emails, Sent and Failed attempts also appear as private order notes; Disabled and Skipped outcomes appear in the log but not as order notes. If an expected entry is missing, go to WooCommerce > Status > Logs > Settings and check that logging is enabled and its threshold does not hide INFO or NOTICE events.
The transactional email log does not necessarily cover WordPress password resets or other WordPress administrative mail. For those messages, check the mail provider’s logs or use a mail logging plugin. WooCommerce’s Email troubleshooting documentation explains the log states and order-note behavior.
If the log says Sent but no one received the email
“Sent” records a handoff to the site mail system, not inbox delivery. WordPress’s wp_mail() starts the sending process; it is not itself an email server. WooCommerce says, “By default, WooCommerce sends mail using the wp_mail() function, a core function of WordPress.” In the default route, WordPress delegates through PHP to a local mail server on the hosting account. The recipient’s mail service may then accept, filter, or reject the message.

- Ask the recipient to check spam or junk folders and any mailbox rules or filtering.
- Use a From address on the store’s own domain rather than a public address such as Gmail or Yahoo. WooCommerce explains this and the domain-authentication requirements in its Email authentication and sender requirements documentation.
- Ask the hosting or mail provider to confirm that the sending domain is correctly authenticated with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.
- If the host’s local mail route is unreliable, configure an authenticated SMTP or transactional-email provider to send through its infrastructure.
- Send a test message after configuration and inspect the provider logs for acceptance, bounce, or rejection. An email-testing service can help check authentication results.
WooCommerce describes the default mail pathway and the role of external providers in its Email and SMTP providers documentation. Provider setup, limits, and terms vary, so check them with the provider you use.
If the log says Failed, Disabled, or Skipped—or has no entry
Failed
Start with the error recorded in the log. Check the host or SMTP connection, credentials, sender authorization, and the provider’s logs. A provider may have a more specific connection or rejection reason.
Disabled
Enable the relevant notification in WooCommerce > Settings > Emails, then trigger it again.

Skipped
Use the log to identify what condition is absent. A missing recipient is one example; correct the relevant setting or order data and retry.

No entry
Recheck that the order reached the status needed to trigger that email and that the notification is enabled. Then verify logging and its threshold under WooCommerce > Status > Logs > Settings. If the trigger and logging settings are correct, inspect WooCommerce fatal-error logs and test for conflicts.
For a conflict test, reproduce the issue in a safe troubleshooting session with other plugins and extensions disabled and a default theme active. Avoid disabling components on a live storefront without a plan to restore them. If the error disappears, re-enable components one at a time to identify the conflict.

- Visibility: Does the setup give you useful test results and logs for errors, bounces, and delivery events?
- Administration: Can you safely manage the provider connection and credentials?
- Terms: Check the provider’s current cost and sending limits directly rather than assuming they are uniform.
