To set up a conditional discount in WooCommerce, first decide whether shoppers should enter a coupon code or the discount should apply automatically. Use WooCommerce’s built-in coupon restrictions for code-based offers limited by spend, products, categories, or email address. For automatic quantity tiers, cart or order thresholds, role-based pricing, and more involved rules, use a dynamic-pricing extension and test the final cart calculation before announcing the offer.
Choose the right kind of discount
WooCommerce coupons can restrict when a code is valid, but they are not a general-purpose automatic pricing rules engine. Dynamic-pricing tools support conditions such as quantity, order total, product or category, and customer role. The appropriate choice depends on how a shopper qualifies and how the discount should be applied.

Before configuring anything, write down the trigger (such as spend or quantity), the products that qualify, the products that receive the discount, the discount form (fixed amount, percentage, or fixed item price), and whether a code is required. Also decide whether dates, customer or role targeting, or exclusions apply. These choices determine which settings to use and help prevent a promotion from applying more broadly than intended.
Set up a coupon with eligibility restrictions
Use this path when a customer must enter a coupon code and the offer is limited by the coupon’s built-in restrictions.
#1 Best Overall
- Create a coupon or edit an existing one in WooCommerce, then open its Usage restrictions settings. The exact surrounding screen labels can vary with the store’s WooCommerce setup.
- Set a minimum or maximum spend if needed. WooCommerce documents the minimum-spend condition as cart subtotal plus tax, so confirm that this is the threshold your promotion intends.
- Choose whether the coupon is individual-use and whether it excludes sale items. Select the products or categories the coupon applies to, and configure any product or category that must be present if that option is available in the coupon settings.
- Add allowed email addresses if the offer is limited to particular billing emails.
- Review the restrictions and publish the coupon when they are ready.
Coupon restrictions are a good fit for eligibility attached to a code. If the offer should apply automatically, uses quantity tiers, or needs more elaborate cart logic, configure a dynamic-pricing rule instead.
Configure automatic and tiered rules with Dynamic Pricing
WooCommerce describes Dynamic Pricing as a way to define pricing rules based on products, order totals, roles, and product categories. The configuration path depends on the rule type and whether you are setting bulk pricing or a special offer. See the Dynamic Pricing documentation.

Product quantity rules
- Edit the target product and open Product Data > Dynamic pricing.
- Add a pricing group, choose who it applies to, and select the quantity basis: product, variation, cart line, or category.
- Choose bulk or special-offer processing, add dates if the offer is time-limited, and define the quantity ranges and discount values.
- Update the product to save the rule.
Use this approach when the discount depends on how many eligible items are bought. Check whether the qualifying quantity should count one product, a variation, a cart line, or products in a category; those choices can produce different results.
Order-total rules
- Go to WooCommerce > Dynamic Pricing > Order totals and add a pricing group.
- Choose whether the condition uses the cart total or a category total.
- Set role eligibility and the minimum or maximum order amount, then select the percentage discount.
- Save the rule and test it with a cart both below and above the intended threshold.
Category rules
- Go to WooCommerce > Dynamic Pricing > Category.
- For a simple category adjustment, set a fixed or percentage change for that category.
- For advanced pricing, configure category quantities, role eligibility, bulk or special-offer processing, and the relevant discount. An advanced rule can use one category as the qualifying purchase and adjust another category.
- Save the changes to enable the rule.
Set up cart-wide conditions with Product Dynamic Pricing and Discounts
If the promotion depends on eligible cart quantity or amount and needs product or category selection or customer targeting, the official Product Dynamic Pricing and Discounts extension documents cart discount rules for that use case. Its documentation also describes excluding non-eligible items from the calculation. Review the extension’s rule documentation.
Rank #3
- Activate the extension and open its Dynamic Pricing management area.
- Go to WooCommerce > Cart Discounts Rules and create a cart rule.
- Choose all products or select specific products or categories, then set the condition using eligible cart quantity or amount.
- Choose the adjustment type and any customer or role targeting, configure priorities if multiple rules may apply, and save.
Check which items count toward the qualifying amount or quantity. If non-eligible items should not help a shopper reach the threshold, configure the calculation accordingly.

Do not assume one promotion disables another. WooCommerce’s Dynamic Pricing documentation says coupon discounts can be added on top of Dynamic Pricing settings. It also states that pricing groups are evaluated from top to bottom and stop when a rule matches; the Product Dynamic Pricing and Discounts extension documents configurable cart-rule priorities. Dynamic Pricing rule behavior and cart discount priorities.
- Test a cart that does not qualify, one that just reaches the threshold, and one that exceeds it.
- Check whether the intended products qualify and whether the discount applies to the intended items.
- Test combinations with coupons and other active pricing rules, then inspect the actual cart and checkout totals.
- Verify date and customer or role restrictions with an eligible and an ineligible case.
- Explain the qualifying conditions where shoppers will see the offer, such as a site banner or product or category description.
Some advanced discounts depend on cart contents and may not appear as a simple sale price on product or catalog pages. A clear explanation on the site can help customers understand what they must add to the cart and when the discount will appear.
