Infineon Technologies AG and Wolfspeed, Inc. announced on 15 October 2026 a new multi-year agreement covering Wolfspeed’s 200 mm silicon-carbide (SiC) wafers. The arrangement expands the companies’ existing 150 mm supply relationship rather than disclosing a replacement of every 150 mm shipment, giving Infineon access to both its established substrate supply and larger-diameter material as it converts production to 200 mm.
The companies did not disclose the contract’s value, wafer volumes, prices, delivery schedule or exact end date. Its strategic purpose is clearer: support Infineon’s 200 mm SiC manufacturing, diversify and strengthen substrate supply, and provide capacity flexibility for growth in electric vehicles, renewable power, industrial equipment, energy storage and data-center infrastructure.
What Wolfspeed and Infineon agreed to
A larger-wafer supply agreement
The 15 October 2026 announcement extends a relationship the companies describe as more than 20 years. Wolfspeed will supply Infineon with 200 mm SiC substrates under a multi-year agreement. The deal transitions part of Infineon’s existing Wolfspeed relationship from 150 mm technology to 200 mm and adds 200 mm wafers alongside the existing 150 mm supply.

Infineon operates a 200 mm SiC fab in Kulim, Malaysia. Securing substrates in the same diameter as that manufacturing platform is intended to support its conversion to 200 mm production and give the company more room to scale output.
#1 Best Overall
- Silicon carbide (SiC) 4H conductive wafers/square sheets, thickness 0.35 mm, for research and development experiments in power electronics and optoelectronics.
- Silicon carbide has a wider bandgap, enabling it to withstand higher operating temperatures, the bandgap of silicon carbide is approximately three times that of silicon, with a theoretical operating temperature exceeding 400°C.
- The critical breakdown field strength of silicon carbide is approximately ten times that of silicon, enabling it to withstand higher voltages and making it more suitable for high-voltage devices.
- The high thermal conductivity of silicon carbide effectively conducts heat, reduces device temperature, and maintains normal operation, its saturated electron drift velocity is twice that of silicon, which helps increase operating frequency and enables device miniaturization.
Commercial terms remain private
Neither company announced a contract value, committed wafer quantity, price, delivery milestones, capacity-reservation figure or precise term length beyond “multi-year.” Any estimate of revenue, market share or guaranteed capacity would therefore be analysis, not an announced term.
Why 200 mm silicon-carbide wafers matter
More usable area per wafer
A 200 mm wafer has about 78% more geometric surface area than a 150 mm wafer before edge losses are considered. That larger platform can yield more usable die in each manufacturing cycle. Infineon says the resulting scale can improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce substrate cost per unit, although actual savings depend on yield, wafer quality, equipment utilization and product design.

A manufacturing transition, not just a purchasing change
Moving from 150 mm to 200 mm requires compatible crystal growth, wafer processing, epitaxy, inspection, handling and device-fabrication equipment. It also requires stable defect levels and repeatable electrical characteristics at the larger diameter. A supply agreement helps secure material for that transition, but it does not by itself prove that a production ramp has reached a particular volume or yield.

How the agreement affects each company
Infineon
For Infineon, the agreement broadens substrate sourcing while supporting its 200 mm conversion. A second wafer diameter can let the company balance mature 150 mm products with newer 200 mm lines instead of forcing an immediate, all-at-once changeover. Infineon’s chief operations officer Alexander Gorski said, “Silicon carbide is at the heart of the energy transition, and securing a high-quality, resilient supply of 200-millimeter substrates is essential to delivering on our customers’ long-term commitments.”

- 90~130nm minimum microchip feature Copper Characterization with TEOS or Black Diamond Low-k ILD on the single crystal silicon wafer
- The original value of un-polished wafer is above $500
- No guarantee for research and other applications
The practical outcome will depend on Infineon’s ability to qualify Wolfspeed material, integrate it into the Kulim process and ramp devices with consistent yield. The announcement does not specify how much of Infineon’s future SiC output will use Wolfspeed wafers.
Wolfspeed
For Wolfspeed, the deal provides a named customer for its 200 mm substrate technology and extends a long-running relationship into the next wafer generation. Wolfspeed commercially launched 200 mm bare wafers and epitaxy in September 2025. The company described those materials as having 350 micrometre bare-wafer thickness plus improved doping and thickness uniformity.

- 4H Silicon Carbide (SiC) wafers devised for advanced research and development in power electronics and optoelectronics.
- With a thickness of 0.35mm, these conductive square sheets can withstand operating temperatures exceeding 400°C, making them ideal for high-temperature applications.
- Exceptional breakdown field strength, approximately ten times that of silicon, allows for reliable operation in high-voltage devices.
- Superior thermal conductivity effectively dissipates heat, reducing device temperature and ensuring stable performance during operation.
- Enhanced electron drift velocity, twice that of silicon, facilitates increased operating frequencies and supports the miniaturization of electronic devices.
Wolfspeed CEO Robert Feurle said, “The strong relationship between Wolfspeed and Infineon has paved the way for this expanded and extended agreement.” The announcement does not disclose whether the contract includes a fixed capacity reservation, minimum purchase commitment or other offtake structure.

SiC market outlook
Wolfspeed cited Yole’s Power SiC 2026 – Markets and Applications estimate that the SiC market will grow from $3.4 billion in 2024 to $11.1 billion by 2031. Those are market-level figures, not the value of the Wolfspeed–Infineon agreement, and they represent a forecast rather than reported contract revenue. Growth depends on vehicle electrification, renewable generation, storage deployment, industrial adoption and data-center investment, as well as the cost and availability of SiC wafers and devices.
How this builds on earlier supply commitments
In February 2018, Wolfspeed and Infineon signed a 150 mm SiC wafer agreement. In January 2024 they expanded and extended that arrangement, including a multi-year capacity reservation, as Infineon cited demand from automotive, solar, electric-vehicle and energy-storage applications. The October 2026 announcement adds the 200 mm dimension to that established supply relationship.
What to watch after the announcement
The releases include forward-looking cautions about production ramp-up, demand, costs, customer acceptance and supply-chain execution. The most meaningful evidence of progress will be qualification of 200 mm material in Infineon’s process, sustained manufacturing yield, disclosed shipment growth and confirmation that Wolfspeed can deliver the required quality and volume. Until those details are published, the agreement should be read as a strategic supply and capacity step, not as proof of a completed 200 mm ramp or a guaranteed financial outcome.
