If you still generate PDFs with wkhtmltopdf, plan a migration rather than assuming the renderer will receive future fixes. The project lists version 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as its current stable series, and its GitHub repository has been archived and made read-only since January 2, 2023. More urgently, the project warns that untrusted HTML or JavaScript can allow complete server takeover. The right replacement depends on whether your pages rely on dynamic JavaScript or are controlled report HTML.
What wkhtmltopdf’s maintenance status means
The official downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the current stable series and gives its release date as June 11, 2020. The GitHub repository banner says the owner archived the repository on January 2, 2023; it is now read-only. The downloads page also says bug reports will not be accepted for versions it lists as obsolete.
That combination matters operationally: the project is not an actively maintained dependency to rely on for future fixes. Its status page also records that Qt 4 has been unsupported since 2015 and that the WebKit used by wkhtmltopdf had not been updated since 2012. Those are the project’s historical statements, not an independent assessment of every downstream package.

The project’s downloads page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise there can be complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat this as a security boundary issue, not merely a rendering-quality concern. Check whether user-controlled HTML, JavaScript, CSS, URLs, or referenced assets can reach the process that creates PDFs.
A GitHub issue reports CVE-2022-35583 as an SSRF vulnerability affecting version 0.12.6. This is an issue report; it does not establish a verified patch status or a validated severity score. Regardless of that report, the project’s own warning about untrusted content is sufficient reason to sanitize inputs and limit the renderer’s privileges and access.

wkhtmltopdf alternatives: choose by document behavior
The project’s status page distinguishes between dynamic pages and controlled report generation. Its suggestions are useful starting points, not a feature-parity guarantee or a ranking based on current benchmarks.

The project names Prince as a commercial option and says its maintainer is not affiliated with Prince. Current versions, support terms, costs, benchmarks, and migration effort are not established by these project recommendations; check each candidate’s current primary documentation before adopting it.

Inventory what your current PDFs depend on
Do not select a replacement based only on whether it can produce a PDF from HTML. wkhtmltopdf behavior can vary across Linux distribution builds, and some features require the project’s patched Qt build, as the downloads page notes. Record what your deployed system actually uses before comparing output.
- List every application call site, package version, operating system or distribution build, and command-line flag.
- Identify whether the executable uses the patched Qt build and which flags or features depend on it.
- Trace all renderer inputs, including user-supplied content, external URLs, local files, stylesheets, images, and fonts.
- Document observable PDF requirements: page dimensions, margins, page breaks, headers and footers, links, image handling, and JavaScript-dependent content.
How to migrate from wkhtmltopdf
- Build a representative PDF corpus. Include ordinary and long documents, non-Latin text and fonts, images, links, page-break edge cases, and JavaScript-dependent pages if your workload uses them. Keep known-good output so reviewers can compare changes.
- Shortlist engines by workload. Start with Puppeteer for dynamic JavaScript pages; consider WeasyPrint or Prince for controlled report HTML, following the project’s guidance. Confirm current requirements and terms from each candidate’s primary documentation.
- Render the same inputs with both engines. Compare pages visually and inspect important structural behavior, including page count, text, links, fonts, image placement, and headers or footers. Treat differences as migration work to resolve, not as proof that either engine is universally better.
- Reduce exposure during the transition. Sanitize user-controlled content. Restrict the renderer’s network and filesystem access and run it with limited privileges where appropriate. The project specifically suggests considering AppArmor or SELinux as additional controls.
- Roll out reversibly. Put the new renderer behind a feature flag or release it to a controlled cohort. Monitor rendering errors and output regressions, and retain a rollback path until the replacement is validated against your documents.
What to decide before removing the old renderer
Choose based on the documents you actually produce and the way you can safely operate the renderer. A candidate that handles your JavaScript behavior may still differ in pagination or fonts; a report-focused choice may fit controlled HTML but not script-driven pages. Make the decision only after the corpus comparison, security review, and deployment review are complete.
