Wizards of the Coast will not voluntarily recognize union units representing employees on Dungeons & Dragons, D&D Beyond and Studio X. The decision does not end the organizing drive: representation will now be decided through a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) secret-ballot election. It is the second Wizards organizing effort in 2026 to reach the election stage, after the Magic: The Gathering Arena team reportedly won its vote with 83% support.
What Wizards decided
Employees working on Dungeons & Dragons and D&D Beyond, together with staff in Studio X, announced on October 6, 2026, that they intended to join United Wizards of the Coast-CWA (UWOTC-CWA). Their deadline for asking Wizards to recognize the units without an election passed on October 13.
On October 14, UWOTC-CWA said Wizards had told the union it did not intend to recognize either unit before a vote. Reports published by Wargamer, Rascal News and Backseat Gamer on October 15 and 16 described the refusal and the move toward an NLRB election.

Voluntary recognition would have allowed Wizards to accept the union as employees’ representative without first holding a representation election. Instead, the question will be put to eligible employees in a confidential NLRB ballot.
Why the election route matters
Wizards’ position, as quoted by Wargamer, is that “it is the right of every eligible employee to decide whether union representation is right for them.” That explains the company’s stated basis for requiring a vote, but the available statements do not provide a detailed campaign plan or other reasons for declining recognition.

The refusal is procedural, not a rejection that ends the organizing effort. If the units meet NLRB requirements and an election is scheduled, employees will decide whether to be represented by UWOTC-CWA. A majority of votes cast generally determines the result; the reports available for this development do not state the units’ eligible-employee counts, an NLRB case number or an election date.

The D&D unit covers employees working on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game and the D&D Beyond digital platform. The published reports do not establish how many eligible employees are in the unit.

Studio X
Studio X is described as the group encompassing most creative staff working on tabletop Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters. It is therefore separate from the digital-development unit that organized around Magic: The Gathering Arena.
How this compares with the Arena effort
UWOTC-CWA formed in June 2026 from the Magic: The Gathering Arena development team. Wargamer reported that 83% of Arena-unit workers voted in favor of unionization. That result is a precedent for the same union organization, but it is not a result for the D&D or Studio X units.

The Arena result should not be treated as a forecast for either new unit. The jobs, bargaining units and election circumstances differ, and neither new unit has voted yet.

- Compensation and advancement: fair wages, transparent career progression and greater job security during industry instability.
- Workload and location: protections for remote work, sustainable workloads, opposition to crunch and opposition to forced return-to-office policies.

These are organizing demands, not established contract terms. Whether any become enforceable workplace rules would depend on election results and subsequent bargaining.
