Wix is the stronger fit if you want to try a website builder for free, combine AI-assisted site creation with hands-on editing, and explore built-in business tools in one platform. Squarespace may suit you better if its design approach appeals to you or you want to sell through its entry-level plan. Neither platform is the best choice for every site, and the feature descriptions below come from the companies themselves—not independent usability or performance tests.
When Wix is the better choice
Wix’s advantage is the range of ways it lets you get started and build. Its official plans page describes a free option alongside paid plans, as well as AI-assisted site creation, drag-and-drop editing, templates, hosting, domain-registration options, marketing tools, and SEO features. That combination makes Wix a reasonable choice if you want to experiment before paying or expect to adjust your layout and business features as the site develops.
Those are vendor-described capabilities, not proof that Wix is easier to use or produces better business or search results. Squarespace also describes AI design guidance, customizable layouts, templates, and built-in marketing and SEO features in its company-authored Wix comparison. Choose based on the workflow and features you need rather than assuming one platform will rank better or be simpler for every user.
Compare plans by what you need to launch
A free starting option is useful for trying Wix, but it is not equivalent to a paid plan. Wix says a Premium plan can connect a custom domain and remove Wix branding, with additional benefits depending on the plan. The company also cautions that pricing and currency vary by location, and displayed prices may depend on yearly billing and payment in full. Check the current plans page for your region, billing term, and included features before comparing costs.
Squarespace’s comparison page lists paid plans and says its lowest-priced option can accept payments and send invoices. Its Help Center’s plan guide, last updated September 17, 2026, says products, content, and memberships can be sold on any current website plan. Plan names and features can change, so confirm the live terms on Squarespace’s plan guide before committing.
Do not treat headline starting prices as a like-for-like total. Your cost depends on the plan’s current feature limits, billing frequency, region, taxes, domain costs and renewal terms, and any payment fees that apply to your sales. Squarespace’s comparison is written by Squarespace, so its statements about both products are vendor claims rather than independent pricing or feature testing.
Understand the domain and site-plan distinction
A domain name and a website subscription are separate services. Wix’s Help Center explains that connecting a custom domain requires both a domain and an eligible Wix site plan; selected plans may include a one-year domain voucher. A voucher is an offer with eligibility terms, not evidence that the domain remains free at renewal. Review the plan and domain terms before choosing, including what renewal will cost.

Offers and eligibility can vary, so compare the renewal terms as well as any first-year promotion. Wix’s explanation of the distinction is available in its Help Center article, Purchasing a Domain vs. Purchasing a Site Plan.

For experimenting and hands-on editing
Wix’s free option gives you a way to begin without immediately choosing a paid plan. Wix describes creating a site with AI and refining it through drag-and-drop editing. That may fit if you want an assisted starting point but still want to arrange and revise the site yourself. A free site does not provide all the benefits of a paid plan, including the custom-domain connection and removal of Wix branding described for Premium plans.
For a design-led starting point
Squarespace describes AI design guidance and customizable layouts. If that presentation and workflow feel more natural to you, it may be the better fit, even though Wix offers more explicit drag-and-drop editing in its own feature description. The available vendor pages do not establish which editor is easier in practice, so try each platform’s current options before building a site you intend to keep.

For payments, products, or services
Check the exact plan needed for your selling model. Squarespace says its lowest-priced plan can accept payments and send invoices, and its current plan guide says products, content, and memberships can be sold on any current website plan. Wix’s plans page lists payments and ecommerce features on paid tiers, while its entry Light plan description does not list those features. Confirm current plan entitlements, fees, and regional availability directly with each provider; an attractive design or free starting tier does not by itself establish that the plan supports your checkout needs.

A practical decision checklist
- Choose Wix if: a free start matters, you want AI-assisted creation plus drag-and-drop refinement, or you are looking for the business and marketing features Wix describes across its plans.
- Consider Squarespace if: its design guidance and layout approach appeal to you, or its current entry-level selling options match your needs.
- Before paying: verify the plan’s selling features, billing term, regional price, fees, domain connection requirements, and renewal costs.
- For either builder: treat claims about SEO, ease of use, and business outcomes as unproven by feature lists alone. The cited pages describe product features; they do not provide an independent head-to-head performance study.
