Start with Windows Disk Cleanup if you want a manual, built-in way to choose what to remove. Choose Storage Sense when you want selected cleanup to run automatically. Wise Disk Cleaner is worth considering if you specifically want the extra customization its vendor documents—but the available documentation does not show that it cleans more effectively or makes a PC faster than Windows tools.
How the three options differ
Wise Disk Cleaner and Disk Cleanup are not identical tools, and on Windows 10 and 11 there is a third option: Storage Sense. The practical differences are how much you configure, whether cleanup is manual or automatic, and which files you choose to remove.

When Wise Disk Cleaner makes sense
Consider Wise Disk Cleaner if you want cleanup controls beyond the Windows manual workflow, especially custom rules or the ability to choose particular folders. WiseCleaner’s manual also describes secure erasure and a system-slimming feature. Those are documented features, not proof that using them improves speed or is preferable for every user.
Because the cited manual describes an older documentation generation, confirm that the option you need is present in the version you install before relying on it. The product page lists version 11.3.9; version and compatibility information can change.

When Windows tools are the better fit
Use Disk Cleanup for a deliberate, one-time review
Disk Cleanup is a straightforward starting point when you want to inspect file categories yourself and avoid installing another utility. Microsoft documents the workflow and the consequences of removing certain files, but does not claim that Disk Cleanup is more effective than Wise Disk Cleaner.
Use Storage Sense for recurring cleanup
Storage Sense can automatically remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Microsoft says it is off by default, though Windows may turn it on to manage selected temporary files when a PC is low on space and notify you. Review its choices rather than assuming it manages Downloads or cloud files: those require configuration.

How to use Disk Cleanup without losing files you need
- Search Windows for Disk Cleanup and open it.
- Choose the drive you want to review.
- Read the file categories and select only those you are comfortable removing.
- If you need additional system-file options, select Clean up system files, choose the drive again if prompted, and review the expanded list.
- Before deleting Previous Windows installation(s), make sure you do not need to return to the earlier Windows version. Microsoft warns that removing it deletes Windows.old and removes that rollback option.
- Confirm the cleanup only after reviewing your selections.
File-category names and available options can vary with the Windows installation. Treat the category descriptions and the rollback warning as more important than a general promise that cleanup is harmless.
What to configure before enabling Storage Sense
Storage Sense is an automation choice, not simply another name for Disk Cleanup. Microsoft describes it as a modern feature whose functionality overlaps the historical cleanmgr.exe utility. Its system-drive scope matters: as Microsoft puts it, “Storage Sense works on your system drive only, which contains the Windows operating system and is usually referred to as C:.” Microsoft Support

- Choose how often cleanup runs.
- Review the Recycle Bin retention choice before letting Windows clear its contents.
- Configure Downloads separately if you want Storage Sense to manage them; otherwise, they are left alone.
- Review cloud-content settings before allowing files to become online-only or otherwise managed.
- Use separate storage settings to manage drives other than the system drive.
If you need space for a Windows update
A cleanup utility is not the only remedy when an update cannot proceed because the device lacks space. Microsoft documents using external storage when internal capacity is insufficient; that specific update workflow calls for at least 10 GB free on the external storage.
