For a rechargeable wireless keyboard, the habit is to keep its battery roughly between 20% and 80% rather than repeatedly running it very low or leaving it fully charged. BGR recommends this range as a way to reduce battery stress, but its article does not establish that following it extends a keyboard’s lifespan.
What the 20%-to-80% habit means
In an August 26, 2026 article, Briley Kenney at BGR applies a familiar smartphone charging habit to rechargeable wireless keyboards: recharge before the battery is nearly empty and, when convenient, unplug before it reaches full charge. The range is approximate, not a requirement to hit exact percentages every time.
BGR’s rationale is that avoiding very low and very high charge levels may reduce chemical stress on lithium batteries. That is the article’s explanation; it does not cite a manufacturer, technical study, or other primary source validating the range for keyboards. It also does not report a test showing that the practice increases the service life of any particular keyboard.
How to apply it without making charging a chore
- If your keyboard shows a battery percentage, use about 20% as a reminder to recharge and about 80% as a reasonable point to stop when convenient.
- If it only gives a low-battery warning, recharge when the warning appears; there is no need to estimate an exact percentage.
- If you need the keyboard for a long stretch, charge it fully. BGR’s advice is a general habit, not a reason to risk losing power when you need the device.
The article does not specify keyboard models, charging systems, or whether a given device manages charging internally. Follow the keyboard maker’s instructions if they differ, and treat the 20%-to-80% approach as optional guidance rather than a guaranteed battery-life fix.

Choose a keyboard setup that fits your upkeep preferences
