For premium wireless headphones with active noise cancellation (ANC), the strongest pick depends on what matters most: What Hi-Fi? names the Sony WH-1000XM6 its best overall, while SoundGuys highlights the Apple AirPods Max 2 for noise blocking and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for comfort on long flights. This shortlist covers five models for different priorities—not a universal ranking.

Although the assignment calls them “headsets,” these are over-ear headphones, not gaming headsets with a boom microphone. ANC reduces sound reaching the wearer; microphone performance determines how clearly other people hear you on calls.

Sony WH-1000XM6: the all-rounder

What Hi-Fi? selects the WH-1000XM6 as its best noise-cancelling headphones overall, citing its all-round strengths. SoundGuys also positions it as a balanced travel option. That makes it a sensible starting point if you want one pair for commuting, travel and music rather than a model chosen for a single standout trait. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 table lists 30 hours of battery life and multipoint support; treat those as that publication’s reported specifications, not a promise of identical runtime in every use.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): comfort for long flights

SoundGuys identifies the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra as its most comfortable choice and recommends it for long flights. Comfort is personal: headband pressure, clamp force, earcup space, heat and glasses can all change how a pair feels over several hours. Use the reviewer’s pick as a promising lead, then check the fit if you can.

Apple AirPods Max 2: a noise-blocking choice

SoundGuys names the AirPods Max 2 its top noise-cancellation pick and says it blocks the most noise among its travel recommendations. TechRadar notes the AirPods Max family’s appeal to iPhone users for connectivity, but confirm that a review statement applies to the current Max 2 rather than an earlier generation. The sources support an Apple-device-use angle; they do not establish that every feature or experience is exclusive to Apple devices.

Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless: long rated battery life and replaceability

SoundGuys describes the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless as rated for more than 50 hours and notes that its battery can be replaced with a screwdriver. Replaceability is a practical ownership consideration, but the published runtime is a rating, not a guarantee of how long a charge will last with every volume level, feature set or listening pattern.

Do not confuse this model with the Sennheiser HDB 630: What Hi-Fi? lists 60 hours for the HDB 630, which is a separate product.

JBL Tour One M3: a feature-rich option with call credentials

SoundGuys names the Tour One M3 its feature-packed choice and says it performs well for calls alongside the Sony WH-1000XM6. That is useful if calls matter alongside music and travel, but call clarity and ANC solve different problems: ANC quiets sound for you, while the microphone and its noise handling affect what the person on the other end hears.

How should you choose ANC headphones for travel or commuting?

Noise cancellation is not one uniform task. Low-frequency aircraft or road rumble, nearby voices and irregular office sounds present different challenges. A reviewer’s comparison is most useful when you know the setting and the specific claim; a broad label such as “best ANC” does not guarantee the same result in every environment.

  • For a balanced travel pair: SoundGuys describes the Sony WH-1000XM6 as balancing noise cancellation and comfort.
  • For the strongest noise blocking in SoundGuys’ travel recommendations: SoundGuys points to the Apple AirPods Max 2.
  • For long-flight comfort: SoundGuys selects the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), while recognizing that fit varies by wearer.
  • For extended time away from a charger: SoundGuys highlights the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless’s more-than-50-hour rating and replaceable battery.

These are attributed editorial judgments, not a common laboratory ranking. What Hi-Fi? says it compares new arrivals’ sound with leading competing models it keeps on site and evaluates comfort, build and features. SoundGuys labels its current guide lab-tested and gives an update log dated September 17, 2026. TechRadar describes hours of testing and direct comparative listening among Bose and Sony models. Their methods and evaluation priorities differ.

Which headphones are best for calls in noisy places?

Choose based on microphone pickup and background-noise suppression sent to the other caller, not ANC alone. SoundGuys says the JBL Tour One M3 performs well for calls alongside the Sony WH-1000XM6. TechRadar notes that a microphone close to the mouth can be preferable when call clarity is critical; these over-ear headphones do not fit the boom-microphone headset category.

What else should you check before buying?

  • Fit and comfort: Consider headband pressure, clamp, earcup space, heat and whether you wear glasses. A reviewer’s comfort pick cannot predict your personal fit.
  • Sound character: Decide whether you prefer a neutral, detail-focused presentation, more bass, or adjustable sound. A small difference in ANC may matter less to you than the sound you enjoy for hours.
  • Battery and serviceability: Compare figures only when the product and test conditions match. Replaceable batteries and ear pads can matter for longer ownership.
  • Everyday features: Folding design, case, multipoint, transparency or ambient mode, ecosystem support and app controls can influence day-to-day usefulness.
  • Local price and availability: These vary by region and can change. Check current listings and confirm the exact generation and regional model name before purchasing.
