Choose wired if the keyboard will remain at one desk and you want uninterrupted USB power with no battery routine. Choose wireless if a cleaner desk, several host devices or movement between locations matters more than charging and receiver management. A tri-mode board can cover both use cases by offering USB, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth, but you still have to maintain its battery and keep track of the receiver.
Connection mode is only one part of the purchase. Layout, switch feel, operating-system support, hot-swap capability, charging behavior, receiver requirements and the manufacturer’s exact performance claims can matter just as much.
Wired or wireless? Start with where the keyboard will live
The most useful first question is whether the keyboard stays connected to one computer. A wired mechanical keyboard is the simpler fit for a permanent desk: connect its USB cable, select the layout and switches you want, and there is no keyboard battery to charge during normal use. The cable does occupy a port and remains visible, so routing it neatly may take a little desk planning.
A wireless mechanical keyboard removes that permanent data cable. That can make a desk easier to rearrange and can let one board serve a desktop, laptop and other compatible hosts. The trade-off is a rechargeable or replaceable battery, a possible USB receiver for 2.4 GHz operation and another device to troubleshoot when a connection or charge is unavailable.

Neither category is automatically better for gaming or office work. Wireless behavior depends on whether a model uses Bluetooth, a 2.4 GHz receiver or both, while wired and wireless polling figures are model- and mode-specific. Treat the numbers on a product page as that model’s specifications, not as a universal test of every keyboard.
What “wireless” actually means
Wireless is an umbrella term. The keyboard may use one radio technology, several, or a wired fallback. Check the exact product page and the ports on each device you plan to connect.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth connects directly to a host that supports Bluetooth, so it can be convenient with laptops and tablets that have no spare USB-A port. A keyboard may store more than one Bluetooth host or may require you to switch profiles manually; the number of profiles and the switching method are implementation details to verify before buying. Bluetooth Low Latency Mode is a vendor-described feature on the CHERRY MX 3.0S Wireless, intended by CHERRY for gaming. That description is marketing language rather than an independent latency measurement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

In 2.4 GHz mode, a small receiver (also called a dongle) plugs into the host’s USB port. The receiver must be available when you want that mode, and a laptop with only USB-C ports may need a suitable adapter or hub. The receiver can be preferable when you want a dedicated wireless link, but it adds a piece of hardware that can be misplaced and a port that must remain accessible.
USB wired mode
Many wireless boards also work as ordinary USB keyboards. USB mode is useful when the battery is low, when a host has no compatible wireless option, or when you want the board to remain attached to one machine. Confirm which cable and connector the model includes. The CHERRY MX 3.0S Wireless, for example, uses an included USB-A to USB-C cable.

Tri-mode keyboards
A tri-mode keyboard combines USB, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth. That flexibility can cover a fixed desktop, a laptop and a mobile setup with one board, but it does not eliminate battery care: the battery still powers the wireless modes. Examples in current manufacturer specifications include the Keychron K2 HE, CORSAIR K65 PLUS Wireless and CHERRY MX 3.0S Wireless.
Wired vs. wireless at a glance
| Decision area | Wired | Wireless | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desk setup | The cable remains connected. | Less cable clutter and easier repositioning. | Whether the keyboard stays in one place and whether the host has a usable port. |
| Connection choices | USB connection to a host. | Bluetooth and/or 2.4 GHz receiver, depending on the model; some also provide USB. | Host compatibility, receiver availability and the intended switching method. |
| Power | Normal USB use does not require a keyboard battery routine. | The battery must be charged or replaced, depending on the design. | Battery test conditions, lighting settings and whether the board can be used while charging. |
| Device flexibility | Usually a straightforward single-host arrangement. | Some models support several hosts or connection modes. | How many devices can be stored and how you change between them. |
| Performance figures | Manufacturers may publish wired polling or response figures. | Figures can differ between Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz and USB. | Compare the same model and mode; polling rate is not the same as measured end-to-end latency. |
| Mechanical features | Layout, switches, keycaps and hot-swap design still matter. | The same mechanical choices apply, plus battery and radio hardware. | Layout, switch type, operating-system compatibility and hot-swap support. |
A buying decision in the order that avoids regrets
- Identify the hosts. List every computer or tablet you expect to use. Mark which ones support Bluetooth and which have a free USB port for a receiver. If one important host supports neither, plan on USB operation and check the included cable or an adapter.
- Choose the physical format. Decide whether you need a number pad, function row, navigation keys or a compact layout. Wireless capability cannot compensate for missing keys you use every day. The CHERRY MX 3.0S Wireless is a full-size example, while the ASUS ROG Falcata uses a 75% split design.
- Choose the typing hardware. Select the switch feel and sound you can live with, then check keycap compatibility and whether the PCB is hot-swappable if you expect to change switches later. These are model-specific specifications, not consequences of being wired or wireless.
- Pick the radio mode. Bluetooth favors hosts with built-in Bluetooth; 2.4 GHz requires the supplied USB receiver; USB avoids radio and battery concerns. If you want all three, confirm that the model really supports all three rather than assuming every “wireless” label means tri-mode.
- Read the power details. Note the battery capacity, the manufacturer’s test mode, lighting condition and charging behavior. A quoted maximum with lighting disabled is not a universal runtime for RGB use.
- Check switching and recovery. Look for dedicated mode controls or profile keys, and decide where the receiver will live. A keyboard that is difficult to switch or whose receiver is easy to lose can erase the convenience of wireless.
- Compare performance claims in context. Put the connection mode beside every polling or response number. Do not turn a high polling specification into a promise of a visibly better experience without independent testing.
Layout, switches and compatibility still decide daily comfort
Layout and desk space
Full-size boards include a dedicated number pad and generally occupy more horizontal space. Tenkeyless and 75% designs reclaim room for the mouse while retaining different portions of the navigation cluster. A compact board can be ideal for a small desk, but count the keys you actually use before accepting layers or function shortcuts. The Falcata’s 75% split format and the MX 3.0S Wireless’s full-size format show why connectivity should be evaluated after the physical layout.

Switch feel and keycap choices
Mechanical switches determine the force, travel and sound you feel; wired and wireless versions can use the same broad switch categories. Compare the specific switch option, stabilizers and keycap profile offered by the model. If you want to experiment, verify hot-swap support rather than assuming it. CHERRY lists the MX 3.0S Wireless as having no hot-swap support, so changing switches on that model is not the same as swapping sockets on a hot-swappable board.
Operating-system support
Check compatibility for each operating system and for the features you intend to configure. The Keychron K2 HE manufacturer page lists macOS, Windows and Linux compatibility. A compatibility list does not guarantee that every lighting or remapping feature has identical software support on every system, so review the model’s current documentation if customization is important.
Battery life and charging: read the conditions, not just the headline
Battery figures are conditional specifications. Lighting, radio mode and power settings can change runtime, so two “hours” claims cannot be compared as a laboratory head-to-head unless their test conditions match.

- CORSAIR lists up to 266 hours for the K65 PLUS Wireless with LEDs off and 2.4 GHz operation. This is a vendor claim on the current product page, accessed October 13, 2026, not an independent test.
- ASUS lists up to 200 hours for the ROG Falcata in SpeedNova normal mode with RGB off. That is a different mode and lighting condition, so it is not a direct comparison with the CORSAIR figure.
- The Keychron K2 HE page lists a 4000 mAh rechargeable battery. Capacity alone does not tell you runtime without the model’s power settings and usage conditions.
If you use RGB lighting, expect the relevant claim to be lower than an LEDs-off maximum unless the manufacturer provides a separate test. Also check whether the board can type while charging. CHERRY says the MX 3.0S Wireless can charge while you play, which can reduce disruption when the battery runs down.
2.4 GHz vs. Bluetooth: choose for the host and the workflow
Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz are not interchangeable labels. Bluetooth avoids a dedicated receiver when the host already supports it. A 2.4 GHz connection needs the keyboard’s USB dongle but may be the mode a manufacturer targets for its gaming-focused wireless specification. Some models provide both, letting you use Bluetooth for one host and the receiver for another.
Before buying, confirm three practical details:
- Port access: can the host accept the receiver, directly or through an adapter?
- Pairing and switching: does the keyboard store the devices you need, and can you change profiles without opening a settings panel every time?
- Fallback: can you connect by USB if Bluetooth pairing fails, the receiver is missing or the battery is empty?
The Keychron K2 HE lists 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.2 and Type-C wired connectivity. The CORSAIR K65 PLUS Wireless lists 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and USB wired connectivity. The CHERRY MX 3.0S Wireless lists Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz with a USB dongle and USB-A to USB-C cable operation. Those are examples of specific products, not a guarantee that every wireless mechanical keyboard has the same modes.
Polling rate and latency claims need careful reading
Polling rate describes how often a keyboard reports to the host; it is not a complete measurement of the time from a key press to an application’s response. A higher advertised rate can also require a particular connection mode, receiver and power setting. Compare like with like and avoid treating a manufacturer’s maximum as proof of a perceptible advantage.
| Model | Manufacturer-stated connection and performance details | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Keychron K2 HE | 1000 Hz polling in wired and 2.4 GHz modes; Bluetooth 5.2, 2.4 GHz and Type-C wired connections. | 1000 Hz applies to the named modes, not automatically to Bluetooth. |
| CORSAIR K65 PLUS Wireless | 1000 Hz report rate; 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and USB wired connections. | The page does not turn the report rate into an independently measured latency result. |
| ASUS ROG Falcata | Up to 8000 Hz in wired and SpeedNova modes. | This is a manufacturer specification; it does not establish that 8000 Hz is necessary for typical users. |
For the CHERRY MX 3.0S Wireless, CHERRY describes 2.4 GHz as offering minimum latency and maximum speed. Treat that phrasing as product marketing, not as a cross-brand test. No independent market-wide battery or latency study establishes a universal wired-versus-wireless winner.

Current tri-mode examples and their trade-offs
Keychron K2 HE
The manufacturer lists 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.2 and Type-C wired connectivity, a 4000 mAh rechargeable battery and 1000 Hz polling in wired and 2.4 GHz modes. It also lists macOS, Windows and Linux compatibility. This combination suits someone who wants one board for a desktop, laptop and USB fallback, provided the layout and switch options meet their needs.
Read the mode-specific polling statement carefully: it names wired and 2.4 GHz, so do not infer the same figure for Bluetooth.
CORSAIR K65 PLUS Wireless
The product page lists 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and USB wired modes, a 1000 Hz report rate and up to 266 hours with LEDs off. The battery number is conditional and comes from CORSAIR’s specification, not an independent endurance test. Its tri-mode design is useful when you want both a receiver link and direct Bluetooth, but you still need to plan charging.
CHERRY MX 3.0S Wireless
CHERRY describes Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz through a USB dongle and USB-A to USB-C cable operation. It can charge while in use, uses a full-size layout and does not support hot-swapping. Those details make it a better match for a buyer who wants a conventional number-pad layout and charging fallback, but a poor fit if changing switches is a priority.

ASUS ROG Falcata
The ROG Falcata is a 75% split design with wired USB, Bluetooth and SpeedNova wireless modes. ASUS states up to 8000 Hz in wired and SpeedNova modes and up to 200 hours in SpeedNova normal mode with RGB off. Both figures are manufacturer claims tied to named modes and settings; they should not be read as proof that every wireless user needs 8000 Hz or will obtain 200 hours with lighting enabled.

How to set up each connection mode
USB wired setup
- Connect the keyboard’s supplied USB cable to the keyboard and a compatible host port.
- Set the keyboard’s mode control to USB or wired if the model has a mode selector.
- Wait for the operating system to recognize the standard keyboard input, then test every key group you rely on, including function and navigation keys.
- Route the cable so it does not pull against the connector or interfere with mouse movement.
2.4 GHz receiver setup
- Plug the keyboard’s receiver into a free, compatible USB port. Keep it in a location where it will not be lost when the keyboard travels.
- Charge the keyboard if needed, then select its 2.4 GHz or receiver mode.
- Use the model’s pairing procedure if the receiver and keyboard are not already paired.
- Test input at the distance and desk position where you will actually work or play; if it fails, move the receiver to a more accessible port or use the supplied adapter or hub when appropriate.
Bluetooth setup
- Enable Bluetooth on the host and put the keyboard into its Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Select the keyboard from the host’s Bluetooth device list and complete pairing.
- Record which profile or device slot you used if the board supports several hosts.
- Switch back to USB or 2.4 GHz if pairing is unavailable or if you need the mode with the manufacturer’s stated polling specification.
Common failure points and practical fixes
The battery runs out during work or play
Connect the USB cable and use wired mode if the keyboard supports it. For future sessions, reduce or disable lighting when runtime is more important than effects, because the quoted maximums from CORSAIR and ASUS are specifically based on RGB or LED-off conditions.
The host has no free USB-A port
Use Bluetooth if the host supports it, or plan a compatible USB-C adapter or hub for the 2.4 GHz receiver. Do not buy a receiver-dependent model without checking the host’s physical ports.
The receiver is missing
Use Bluetooth or USB only if the keyboard supports those modes. Store the receiver with the keyboard when transporting it; a tri-mode label does not guarantee that every mode can replace a lost dongle on every host.

Verify the physical format before buying. A full-size board and a 75% split board place keys differently even when both are mechanical and wireless. If you need a number pad or dedicated navigation keys, make that requirement non-negotiable.
You expected to change switches later
Check the hot-swap specification before purchase. The MX 3.0S Wireless, for example, is listed without hot-swap support, so selecting it for future switch experimentation would conflict with its documented design.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before you order
- Will the board stay at one desk, or must it move among hosts?
- Do you need a number pad, a 75% arrangement or another specific layout?
- Which switch feel, sound and keycap profile suit your work?
- Does the model support your operating systems and the features you need?
- Is it hot-swappable if you plan to replace switches?
- Does wireless mean Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz, USB, or all three on this exact model?
- Can every intended host accept the selected connection, including the receiver’s USB plug?
- What are the battery-life conditions, and can you type while charging?
- Are polling or report-rate figures tied to a specific mode?
- Where will you store the receiver when the keyboard is not at the desk?
