Wired headphones connect only when the plug and any adapter match the phone’s supported audio connection. First identify whether your phone has a 3.5 mm headphone jack, USB-C, or Lightning, then check that any adapter is compatible. If the connection matches, test the headphones and phone separately before treating the problem as a hardware failure.
Check that the headphone plug matches your phone
Look at the phone’s ports and the headphone plug. A 3.5 mm plug fits a 3.5 mm headphone jack. If the phone has only USB-C or Lightning, 3.5 mm headphones need the appropriate adapter. Apple documents separate connection options for 3.5 mm, Lightning, and USB-C devices: Apple’s guide to headphones and adapters.
| Phone connection | Headphone plug | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm headphone jack | 3.5 mm | Connect directly; check that the plug is fully seated. |
| Lightning | 3.5 mm | Use a Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter intended for a compatible device. Apple specifies iOS 10 or later for the setup described on its headphone support page. |
| USB-C | 3.5 mm | Use a compatible USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter, and verify digital-audio support for the phone and accessory. |
| USB-C | USB-C | Confirm that the exact phone model supports wired USB-C audio and the headphones’ required features. |
Why a USB-C adapter may not work
USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guarantee that every USB-C accessory or adapter will work for audio on every phone. Google advises Pixel users to check that USB-C accessories and adapters support digital audio: Google Pixel headphone and audio guidance. Samsung also notes that USB-C headset features can vary by device: Samsung’s USB-C headset troubleshooting.

#1 Best Overall
- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
Try these checks in order
- Confirm the connection. Match the headphone plug to the phone’s jack, or use the correct adapter for Lightning or USB-C. Push the connector in fully without forcing it.
- Test each side separately. Connect the headphones to another device. Then try a known-working wired headset on the phone. If the headphones fail on multiple devices, the headset or its cable may be the issue; if multiple working headsets fail on this phone, the phone or its compatibility may be the issue.
- Remove interference. Take off the phone case if it blocks the connector, disconnect other accessories, and reconnect the headphones. If you are using a USB-C charging-and-audio splitter, remove it and test the headphones directly. Samsung recommends trying a direct connection and notes that third-party dual adapters can cause issues: Samsung support.
- Restart the phone. A restart can clear a temporary recognition or audio-routing problem. After it starts again, reconnect the headphones and check for sound.
- Inspect the cable and ports visually. Look for a damaged cable, bent or broken plug, visible debris, or bent parts in the port. Do not insert sharp objects or probe inside the phone’s port. Samsung advises service if pins are bent: Samsung troubleshooting guidance.
- Check volume and software. Raise the phone’s media volume and install any available phone software update. Samsung includes software updates among its troubleshooting steps: Samsung support.
When to contact the phone maker
Contact the phone manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the port appears damaged, pins are bent, or several known-working headphones still fail after you confirm compatibility and complete the basic checks. Samsung recommends requesting service when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem: Samsung support. If only one headset fails across devices, check that headset’s cable and connector or contact its manufacturer instead.
