To use wired Beats with a PS4, connect a compatible 3.5 mm audio cable to the headphones and the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s headset jack. Then open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and select All Audio to hear game and system sounds through the headphones. Whether the microphone also works depends on the Beats model and cable.
Will your Beats work on PS4?
They can work for wired listening if your exact Beats model has a compatible 3.5 mm connection. Beats models and included cables vary, so check the model rather than assuming any Beats cable will fit or carry microphone audio.
Apple lists a 3.5 mm analog audio cable for Beats Solo 4 and Beats Studio Pro. For Solo 4 specifically, Apple says wired playback through the 3.5 mm cable does not require battery power. - Confirm that your Beats model supports wired 3.5 mm audio and use a cable compatible with that model.
- Connect the cable to the headphones, then plug its other end fully into the headset jack on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller.
- On the PS4, go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones.
- Select All Audio to route game and system audio to the headphones. Choose Chat Audio if you want headphone output limited to chat. PlayStation says Chat Audio is the default on its current PS4 audio-output instructions.
How to check whether the Beats microphone works
Headphone audio and microphone input are separate checks. If you need voice chat, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level and speak into the microphone. Watch whether the input meter responds. PlayStation recommends trying another headset or controller if the meter does not respond; its voice-chat troubleshooting guide describes this check.

Do not assume every wired Beats model-and-cable combination supports PS4 chat. In an archived FAQ published October 30, 2013, Sony said some third-party headsets may support basic audio and chat, but it could not guarantee that functionality for all of them. That is historical general guidance, not a model-specific compatibility confirmation: PlayStation 4: The ultimate FAQ – Europe.
Fix common connection problems
- No sound or faint sound: Push the plug all the way into the controller’s headset jack. PlayStation lists a fully inserted plug as a basic check in its DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting guidance.
- “Output to Headphones” is grayed out: The controller has not detected the headphones. Reseat the plug. If possible, try a different headset or controller to help identify which part is causing the problem.
- Game sound stays on the TV or is missing from the headphones: Return to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and select All Audio.
- The microphone meter does not move: Check the connection and microphone level, then test another headset or controller if available. A cable that carries headphone audio is not, by itself, proof that microphone input is supported.
If you need a different cable
Choose a replacement cable for your exact Beats model, especially if you need the microphone as well as headphone audio. Fit and microphone support can vary; the available guidance does not establish one universal cable for all Beats headphones. For Solo 4, Apple documents wired playback over its 3.5 mm audio cable without battery power, but that specific statement should not be generalized to other models.
