Yes, WinRAR can open and extract some EXE files: specifically, self-extracting archives (SFX files). But an .exe extension does not mean a file is an archive. A regular program or installer may not be browsable with WinRAR, and double-clicking an unfamiliar EXE can run its code rather than show its contents.
Why some EXE files open in WinRAR
An archive is a container for files. A self-extracting archive combines archived data with an executable component, so it can be opened as an archive in WinRAR or launched as a program. RARLAB confirms that WinRAR can unpack self-extracting .exe archives without running them. RARLAB’s guidance on SFX archives describes this distinction.
WinRAR’s archive workflow lets you inspect or extract the contents. Launching the EXE is a different action: it executes code. Some SFX files can also be configured to run an executable contained in the archive when launched.
Which EXE files can WinRAR open?

How to extract an EXE without running it
- Open the file in WinRAR. Use WinRAR’s archive-opening workflow rather than double-clicking the EXE in Windows. If WinRAR recognizes it as an archive, its contents should appear in the archive window.
- Choose the files to retrieve. Select the contents you want, then use WinRAR’s extraction command and choose a destination folder.
- Do not launch the EXE to test it. If WinRAR does not recognize the file as an archive, that does not prove it is safe or that it can be extracted. Treat it as an executable unless you can verify it is an SFX archive.
RARLAB’s developer Eugene Roshal advised users to unpack SFX archives with WinRAR and not run them. His guidance on unpacking SFX files makes clear that extracting an archive and executing its EXE are separate actions.
Is it safe to open an EXE in WinRAR?
Using WinRAR to extract an SFX archive is not the same as running the EXE. However, an SFX file remains executable if launched, and executable files can run code. RARLAB advises running SFX files only when they come from a trustworthy source. Extraction alone should not be treated as proof that a file is harmless.

If you are unsure whether a file is an archive, do not double-click it just to find out. WinRAR may be able to inspect a genuine SFX archive, but it cannot turn an ordinary program into an archive browser.

The basic distinction is about the file and the action: WinRAR can unpack SFX archives, while an EXE is not automatically an archive. Version listings change over time; as checked October 7, 2026, RARLAB listed WinRAR 7.23 as a release and WinRAR 7.30 beta 1 as available. Check RARLAB’s homepage for the current release listing.
