The right way to run Windows software on Linux depends on the program. Use Wine for many individual Windows applications, Proton for Windows games in Steam, and a Windows virtual machine when the software needs Windows itself, a Windows driver, or compatibility features that a translation layer cannot provide. None of these approaches guarantees that every application will work.

Wine and Proton do not boot Windows. They provide compatibility layers that translate or implement Windows interfaces for Linux. A virtual machine is different: it runs a complete Windows guest operating system inside Linux. Checking the exact application, version, game storefront, dependencies, and online-service requirements before choosing a method prevents most wasted setup time.

What Wine, Proton, and a Windows virtual machine actually run

Wine implements Windows interfaces instead of running Windows

Wine is a compatibility layer for running Windows applications on POSIX systems such as Linux. It does not contain a booted copy of Windows and is not a conventional virtual machine. Wine implements Windows APIs and translates Windows API calls into interfaces the Linux system can use, including POSIX calls, while the application itself runs on the Linux host.

The project describes its name as “Wine Is Not an Emulator.” The practical distinction matters more than the acronym: you do not install a Windows desktop inside Wine. You install or launch an individual Windows program through a Wine environment, and that program may or may not work depending on its version, libraries, graphics needs, installer, and other dependencies.

Proton is Wine-based and managed through Steam

Proton is Valve’s Steam-focused compatibility tool. Valve describes it as a modified version of Wine combined with high-performance graphics API implementations so Windows games can run on Linux through Steam. Proton is not a separate Windows operating system and is not intended to replace a Windows guest for every type of software.

For most users, the sensible starting point is the Proton version supplied by the Steam client. Proton versions can change as compatibility improves, but changing versions is not a universal fix. A particular game may depend on anti-cheat middleware, launchers, media components, copy protection, or other Windows-specific behavior that still prevents it from working.

A virtual machine runs a complete Windows guest

A virtual machine (VM) creates a separate guest computer in software. Linux remains the host operating system, while Windows is installed inside the VM as its own guest operating system. Applications running in that guest see Windows APIs, Windows drivers, and a Windows system rather than a compatibility implementation.

On Linux, QEMU with KVM can provide hardware-assisted virtualization when the host exposes KVM. The libvirt QEMU driver looks for QEMU/KVM and the /dev/kvm device when hardware acceleration is available. A VM still requires a Windows installation, storage, memory, processor capacity, and whatever Windows licensing applies to your use; the sources here do not establish licensing terms.

Wine versus Proton versus a VM

Approach What runs Best fit Main qualification
Wine The Windows application on Linux through Wine’s Windows-interface implementation An individual non-Steam Windows application Support varies by application and version; inspect the specific WineHQ report and its configuration details.
Proton A Windows game through a modified Wine layer and graphics API implementations Windows games purchased or managed through Steam Anti-cheat, launchers, media components, DRM, and other dependencies can block a title. Some middleware needs developer-side configuration.
Windows VM A full Windows guest operating system under a virtual-machine monitor Software that needs Windows itself, a Windows driver, or functionality unavailable through a compatibility layer Requires a Windows guest installation and allocated host resources. KVM acceleration depends on KVM availability.

There is no evidence here for a universal performance ranking. Wine and Proton avoid running a second operating system, while a VM can provide stronger Windows compatibility at the cost of a full guest environment and its resource overhead. The result depends on the application, graphics workload, drivers, and configuration.

How to check a Windows program before installing anything

1. Identify the exact software

  1. Write down the application’s exact name, edition, and version. A report for one release does not automatically apply to another.
  2. For a game, record the storefront, whether it uses an online service, and whether it has anti-cheat, a separate launcher, DRM, or a specialized controller or media component.
  3. Note whether the program needs a Windows kernel driver, hardware dongle, system-wide service, or another component that a compatibility layer may not be able to provide.

2. Check the WineHQ Application Database for non-Steam software

For a conventional Windows application, search the WineHQ Application Database for the exact program. Read the individual report rather than relying on a general reputation for Wine. Pay attention to the tested application version, Wine version, distribution, installation steps, known bugs, and whether the report is current.

Reports are user submissions, so they can describe different hardware and configurations. A favorable result is evidence that a particular combination worked for someone; it is not a guarantee for a different release or Linux system. Conversely, an old failure report may not reflect newer Wine builds, but it should still alert you to a known dependency or design limitation.

3. Check a Steam game with Proton information

  1. Open the game in the Steam client and inspect its Properties. Steam’s compatibility controls are normally grouped under a Compatibility section, although labels can change between client versions.
  2. Start with the Proton tool supplied by Steam unless the title’s current compatibility information points to another version.
  3. Look for title-specific reports and recent player notes, especially about multiplayer access, launchers, cut-scenes, controllers, and updates.
  4. Investigate anti-cheat support before spending time on launch options. A game may start successfully and still fail when it connects to an online service.

Valve documents friction involving Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, .NET or WPF launchers, Media Foundation, and anti-tamper or DRM systems. Some supported anti-cheat middleware requires the game developer to enable or configure Linux support. Kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported, so changing a Proton setting cannot solve every anti-cheat failure.

4. Decide whether the software needs a Windows guest

Choose a VM when the application requires Windows itself, a Windows-only driver, a system component that Wine cannot implement, or a level of compatibility that the available reports do not establish. A VM is also a practical fallback when the program is business-critical and you need a complete Windows environment rather than an experiment with a compatibility layer.

Choosing Wine for a non-Steam application

Wine is usually the first route to test when you need one Windows application and the application database shows a recent, credible report. It keeps the program integrated with the Linux desktop without requiring a second operating system.

  • Use Wine first when: the software is a desktop application, its report is recent, and it does not require a Windows kernel driver or specialized system service.
  • Expect extra work when: the installer uses uncommon frameworks, the program depends on specific fonts or media components, or the report lists manual configuration.
  • Stop escalating Wine when: the application depends on a Windows driver, hardware-level protection, or a component the reports identify as unsupported.

Keep the application version tied to the report you consulted. Updating the Windows program can change behavior even if the Wine version is unchanged.

Choosing Proton for Steam games

Proton is the natural route for a Windows game in Steam because Steam manages the compatibility tool and integrates it with the game’s library entry. This avoids treating every game as a separate Wine project.

  • Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging

Compatibility is still game-specific. Graphics translation can make a title playable, but launchers, video playback, copy protection, and online services can fail independently. Anti-cheat is the most important qualification for multiplayer games: Valve says some middleware can work after manual configuration, but kernel-space anti-cheat is not currently supported. Where developer configuration is required, the player cannot necessarily repair the problem with a different Linux setting.

Do not interpret a game starting at the menu as proof that multiplayer, updates, cut-scenes, or every graphics option will work. Check current title-specific information and retest after major game or Proton updates.

When a Windows VM is the better answer

A VM trades simplicity for completeness. Because Windows is actually installed as the guest, software that expects Windows APIs, services, or drivers has a better chance of behaving as it would on a Windows PC. That does not make every peripheral or graphics workload ideal in a VM, but it removes the compatibility-layer question for many ordinary applications.

Host requirements

  • Hardware virtualization: QEMU/KVM acceleration requires KVM to be available on the Linux host; libvirt checks for the /dev/kvm device.
  • Guest resources: reserve processor time, memory, storage, and graphics capacity for Windows without starving Linux and other applications.
  • Guest installation: install Windows in the VM and maintain it like a separate computer, including updates and security controls.
  • Licensing: use a Windows license and activation arrangement appropriate to your edition and situation. Specific licensing terms are not established here, so verify them with the relevant Microsoft documentation.

VM trade-offs

A VM adds a second operating system to update, back up, and troubleshoot. It also consumes resources while running. On the other hand, it gives you a clearly separated Windows environment and can be easier to support for software that has strict Windows assumptions. The available documentation confirms KVM hardware acceleration but does not provide a like-for-like benchmark against Wine or Proton, so do not choose solely on an assumed speed ranking.

Optional paid Wine-based support

If you prefer a commercial product with vendor support instead of configuring Wine directly, CrossOver is an optional paid Wine-based route. It remains a compatibility layer, not a guarantee that every Windows program will run. Free Wine and Proton remain valid choices.

CrossOver option Price shown on the US store on October 13, 2026 Included support or term
Free trial Listed as free for 14 days Trial access
CrossOver+ $74 USD Full version, 12 months of email and phone support, upgrades, and bug fixes for 12 months
CrossOver Life $494 USD Full version, no renewal fees, lifetime email and phone support, upgrades, and bug fixes

Prices can change, and the store page states “No Refunds.” Verify the current terms before purchasing. A paid layer can reduce configuration effort or provide support, but it does not change the application-specific nature of compatibility.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The installer fails before the program opens

Confirm that the report matches the exact application version. If it does, follow the report’s stated dependencies and configuration rather than applying random launch options. If the installer requires a Windows service, driver, or framework identified as unsupported, move to a VM instead of repeatedly reinstalling.

The game launches but multiplayer does not work

Check anti-cheat and online-service requirements first. Determine whether the title uses Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, kernel-space protection, or another service. Developer-side enablement may be required, and kernel-space anti-cheat is not currently supported by Proton.

Graphics or video playback is broken

For Proton games, check reports for graphics API, Media Foundation, launcher, and cut-scene issues. For Wine applications, compare the report’s graphics and media dependencies with your version. If the software requires Windows components that the compatibility layer cannot provide, test it in a Windows VM.

The program works until an update

Record the previously working application, Proton or Wine version, and configuration. Recheck current reports for the new application build. Compatibility can change when either the Windows program or its supporting components are updated.

Bottom line: select the narrowest solution that meets the requirement

For one non-Steam application, check its exact WineHQ entry and try Wine when the report is recent and promising. For a Steam game, begin with Steam’s Proton tool and investigate anti-cheat and other dependencies before looking for workarounds. Use a QEMU/KVM Windows VM when the software needs Windows itself, a Windows driver, or dependable behavior that the compatibility reports do not establish. Treat CrossOver as a supported paid Wine option, not as a universal compatibility guarantee.
