No. Wine can run many Windows applications, but it cannot run every Windows program. Compatibility depends on the particular application, its version and dependencies, and the Wine and host-system setup. Before relying on an app, check reports for that exact version in WineHQ’s Application Database.

What Wine does—and what it does not do

Wine is a compatibility layer: it translates Windows API calls into calls that POSIX-compliant systems can use. WineHQ lists Linux, macOS, and BSD as examples of supported host operating systems. It is not a Windows virtual machine or an emulator that boots a complete copy of Windows. WineHQ’s description of Wine explains this distinction.

That design can let applications integrate with the host desktop without the overhead of running a full guest operating system. But it does not mean Wine implements every interface or behavior a Windows program might need. An app may rely on particular APIs, libraries, drivers, or other dependencies; Wine’s presence alone cannot establish that those requirements will be met.

Why compatibility varies by program

Different Windows applications make different demands of the operating system. One may work well while another fails to install, launches with missing features, or breaks during a particular task. Even a compatibility report may not apply to a different release of the app or a different host configuration.

#1 Best Overall

There is no authoritative universal percentage of Windows applications that Wine can run. WineHQ’s Application Database collects reports and test results for individual programs, so those entries—not a general claim about Wine—are the useful starting point for a specific app.

How to check whether your app will work

  1. Identify the exact application and version. A report for an older or newer release may not describe the one you need.
  2. Search WineHQ’s Application Database. Look for reports that match the app version and, where details are available, the host and setup you plan to use.
  3. Read the report’s context. Note what worked, what did not, and whether the reported result depended on a particular configuration. Do not treat one report as a guarantee for another environment.
  4. Consult WineHQ’s documentation and support resources if you need help with installation or troubleshooting; links to these resources are available from the WineHQ site.
  5. Test the real workflow before depending on the app. For work-critical software, confirm the tasks and features you actually need rather than checking only whether the program opens.

Wine releases and what the version numbers tell you

As of October 7, 2026, WineHQ lists Wine 11.0 as its stable release and Wine 11.19 as its development release; Wine 11.19 was announced October 2, 2026. These labels describe Wine releases, not a promise that any particular application works. Check WineHQ for the project’s current release information.

When to consider another approach

If your application has poor or uncertain Wine reports, a virtual machine is a different option: it runs a guest operating system rather than translating Windows API calls. That approach has different resource and desktop-integration trade-offs, and the best choice depends on the application and your needs.
