Windows does not document a universal setting to turn webcam on/off OSD notifications on or off. Microsoft says a device with a camera light uses that light to indicate activity; when a device has no camera light, Windows shows a notification as the camera turns on or off. To troubleshoot access, check camera permissions, Windows 11 device controls, and any physical shutter or switch.
How Windows indicates camera activity
The indicator depends on the device: a camera light signals activity when present; otherwise, Windows displays an on-screen notification when the camera turns on or off. Microsoft’s camera privacy guidance describes this behavior but does not document a separate setting that forces the notification on every Windows 10 or 11 device.
This is different from permission. Permissions decide whether apps may use the camera; the activity indicator communicates that the camera is turning on or off. Changing permission settings is not a documented way to enable a missing OSD alert.

- Windows 11: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Privacy > Camera.
Check device camera access and app access. Windows also separates Microsoft Store app access from desktop-app access; desktop apps such as browsers and video-call clients use the desktop-app permission. If a setting is unavailable, an administrator may manage it. See Microsoft’s instructions for managing camera permissions.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Select the connected camera you want to disable, or choose a disabled camera to enable it.
- Follow any prompts. You may need administrative access; some devices require a restart, and disabling one camera may disable multiple cameras.
These controls manage whether the camera is enabled, not whether Windows displays an activity notification. Microsoft’s camera settings guidance covers the device controls.
Check for a physical camera control
A keyboard camera key, dedicated button, side switch, or built-in shutter can block the camera regardless of app permissions. Check the device for these controls and make sure a shutter is open or a switch is enabled before troubleshooting Windows settings. Their presence and location depend on the device. Microsoft describes these possible controls in its camera privacy guidance.

What to do if the notification does not appear
- Determine whether the device has a camera activity light. Microsoft says that light is the indicator on devices equipped with one.
- If the device has no camera light, confirm that the camera is enabled and that the relevant app has permission to use it.
- Check for a physical shutter, switch, or camera key that may be blocking operation.
- If these checks do not explain the behavior, consult the device maker’s documentation or support for model-specific camera controls. The cited Microsoft instructions do not provide a universal notification toggle to try.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Readers still using Windows 10 should check Microsoft’s current camera guidance and support information when deciding whether to continue using that version.
