Windows uses several identifiers at once: the product name (such as Windows 11), the release label (such as 25H2), the OS version number (10.0), the OS build, and the edition (such as Home or Pro). Each answers a different question. To identify your installation, open Settings > System > About and check Edition, Version, and OS Build. For support status, match the exact edition and release to Microsoft’s current support information.
What do the different Windows version identifiers mean?
Windows does not have one single version number that answers every question. The identifiers describe different levels of the operating system:
- Product name: Windows 10 or Windows 11 identifies the broad product generation.
- Release label: A label such as 24H2, 25H2, or 26H2 identifies a feature-release generation.
- OS version: The Win32 version reference lists both Windows 10 and Windows 11 as 10.0. That value alone does not tell you which product generation is installed.
- OS build: The build gives a more specific identifier for the installed operating system and its update state. Microsoft says the OS build determines which platform APIs are available at runtime.
- Edition: Home, Pro, Education, Enterprise, IoT Enterprise, and LTSC variants identify different product editions, some with different servicing terms.
These values should be read together. A release label is not a build number, and neither one by itself establishes whether an installation is still supported.

Windows 11 release labels follow a YYHX pattern: the first two digits refer to the year, and H1 or H2 marks the first or second half of that year. For example, 25H2 denotes a Windows 11 release associated with the second half of 2025. Microsoft’s policy describes annual feature updates in the second half of the calendar year; the release tables provide the actual availability dates and build information for each release.

The label describes a release generation, not the exact patch level on a particular PC. Two devices on the same release label can have different OS builds because their update state differs.
Why can Windows 11 show version 10.0?
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are both listed as OS version 10.0 in Microsoft’s Win32 version reference. So seeing 10.0 does not mean Windows 11 is actually Windows 10; it is an OS version value shared by both product generations.

There is another compatibility wrinkle for developers: applications that are not manifested for newer Windows versions can receive an older compatibility-oriented value from version APIs. Interpret API output in the context of the application’s manifest and the API being used, rather than treating every returned value as the definitive product name.
How do I find my Windows edition, version, and build?
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Read the Edition, Version, and OS Build entries in the device specifications area. Microsoft’s identification guide describes this page as showing those three details.
- Alternatively, open Start or Search, type
winver, and press Enter to display Windows version details.
For more complete system information, Microsoft also documents System Information (msinfo32) and command-line or PowerShell methods. The Settings page is the direct place to check the edition, release, and build together.

How do Windows releases, builds, and support relate?
A release label tells you which feature-release generation you have; a build identifies the installed OS more precisely. Neither is a substitute for checking lifecycle support. Microsoft’s supported-version tables pair releases with builds and servicing information, while lifecycle terms can differ by edition and servicing channel.
As of Microsoft’s release information checked on October 7, 2026, Windows 11 version 26H2 was listed as available on September 29, 2026, with build 26300 in the release table. The same table also lists 26H1, 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2, with their associated builds and servicing dates. These are time-sensitive table entries, not permanent support guarantees: consult the live table for current status.

Windows 11 26H1 has specific device context. Microsoft says availability began February 10, 2026, and that the release is scoped to select new devices. It is not designed as an in-place update for existing 24H2 or 25H2 devices, uses a different Windows core from those releases, and includes the features introduced with 25H2. It should not be treated as the ordinary next upgrade for every Windows 11 PC.

LTSC exceptions depend on the precise LTSC product and edition; do not apply general Windows 10 timing to an LTSC installation without checking its specific lifecycle listing.

- Find the installed edition, release version, and OS build using Settings > System > About or
winver. - Compare the exact edition and release against Microsoft’s current supported-version and lifecycle information.
- Check whether that release is available for your device. In particular, a release scoped to selected new devices may not be an upgrade option for an existing PC.
Do not infer support from the Windows 10 or Windows 11 name, the 10.0 OS version, or a build-number prefix alone. LTSC and other edition-specific servicing terms make the edition an essential part of the check.
Are Windows SDK versions the same as Windows versions?
No. The Windows SDK and Windows App SDK are separate developer products, each with its own version numbers. Those SDK versions are not the release label or OS build installed on a PC. When checking whether an application can use a platform API at runtime, distinguish the SDK used to build the application from the device’s OS build, which Microsoft identifies as the factor determining runtime API availability.
