If Windows started freezing, shutting down, or restarting after an update, first check whether it can still reach the desktop. Use Settings for a running PC; use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) if it will not start. The timing can point to an update, but it does not prove the update caused the problem: hardware, drivers, and other software can also trigger crashes or unexpected restarts.

1. Check how Windows is failing

Note whether the PC reaches the desktop and whether it freezes in Windows, powers off, or restarts with an error screen. If you see a blue screen or stop code, record the code and any “What failed” module name. Those details can help narrow down whether hardware, a driver, or software is involved, according to Microsoft’s unexpected restart and stop-code guidance.

If Windows repeatedly fails to start, stop trying normal sign-ins and use WinRE. Microsoft documents entry through Advanced startup, automatic recovery after repeated failed starts, or Windows installation media.

2. Try low-disruption checks while Windows is usable

Run Windows Update troubleshooting

On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. For Windows 10 or 11, Microsoft also provides update troubleshooting and repair guidance. Check update history to identify what installed shortly before the symptoms began; the sequence helps guide troubleshooting but does not establish cause.

Check devices, hardware, and free space

  • Disconnect newly added hardware, then check whether the problem continues.
  • Try Safe Mode to see whether Windows behaves differently with a limited set of drivers and services.
  • In Device Manager, look for devices marked with an exclamation point.
  • Check available space on the system drive. Microsoft suggests keeping 10% to 15% free as a general rule of thumb, not a fixed minimum; the amount needed varies by system configuration.

These checks follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for unexpected restarts.

3. Remove a recent update if the timing points to it

If you can open Settings

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
  2. Select the relevant recent update and choose Uninstall, if that option is available.

Labels may vary by Windows version. Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled. Before removing a security update, weigh the risk: doing so can temporarily remove protections. Reinstall the update or apply a corrected update when an appropriate fix is available. See Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling a Windows update.

If Windows will not open

In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then follow the prompts. This route is for a problem that began after an update; if the PC cannot start for another reason, use the recovery option that matches the startup problem.

4. Use Startup Repair for a PC that will not start

In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Startup Repair checks for certain startup problems, including missing or damaged system files and boot configuration errors. It is aimed at Windows failing to start, not a guarantee against freezes that happen after you reach the desktop. Microsoft explains its scope in Startup Repair guidance.

To reach WinRE, use Advanced startup in Settings if available, let Windows enter automatic recovery after repeated failed starts, or boot from Windows installation media. Microsoft says a BitLocker recovery key may be required for Startup Repair on an encrypted device. Its Windows Recovery Environment guide covers entry paths and recovery tools; installation media can be created on a USB drive or DVD.

5. Repair system files, then investigate other causes

If Windows starts and system-file corruption is suspected, run the repair tools in the order Microsoft specifies. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run DISM first, wait for it to finish, then run System File Checker and allow verification to reach 100%:

  2. sfc /scannow

DISM supplies files that SFC may need to repair corrupted files. SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files from a cached copy. These tools address system-file corruption; using them does not prove corruption caused the freeze or shutdown. Follow Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker instructions.

If the symptoms continue, use the stop code, Device Manager warnings, recent hardware changes, and Safe Mode behavior to narrow down other driver, hardware, or software causes. Choose the next recovery action according to whether Windows starts, the issue followed an update, or the PC is stuck in a startup loop, as outlined in Microsoft’s recovery options guide.

Before using recovery options

Back up important files where possible. Microsoft warns: “Before you start: Some recovery options can result in data loss.” The warning appears in its Recovery options in Windows guidance.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Your Windows version and support arrangement affect what comes next; see Microsoft’s update guidance and recovery environment information.
