A Windows update can install successfully without changing the version shown by winver. Monthly quality updates add fixes and security improvements; only a feature update changes the Windows release. Check the update’s name and your installed version before trying to install anything again.

Why an installed update may not change your Windows version

Windows delivers different kinds of updates. Quality updates are smaller, more frequent fixes and security updates, and they usually change the OS build rather than the Windows release. Feature updates introduce a new Windows release and are the updates expected to change the version shown in winver. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows Update Assistant guidance.

Update type What it does Should the Windows release change?
Quality update Provides recurring fixes and security updates. No. The OS build may change, while the release version stays the same.
Feature update Installs a Windows feature release with new capabilities. Yes, if the update applies to your device and completes installation.

Check the installed version and the update status

  1. Check the Windows version: Select taskbar Search, type winver, and open the result. Record the version and OS build shown. You can also open Settings > System > About and review Windows specifications.
  2. Check what Windows installed: Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Note the update name or KB number and whether it says installed, failed, or requires a restart. A successful KB entry by itself does not mean a feature release was installed.
  3. Restart if Windows asks you to: Restart normally, then run winver again. If the update was only a quality update, the release version will remain unchanged.

If the feature update is not offered

A feature update may not appear immediately for every device. Microsoft rolls releases out in phases and can apply a safeguard hold when a known compatibility issue could affect a device. A hold prevents the feature update from being offered until the underlying issue is resolved; it is not proof that an earlier update failed. See Microsoft’s guidance on checking safeguard holds.

Eligibility can also depend on the target release. For example, Microsoft says Windows 11 version 26H1 is intended for select new devices and is not offered as an in-place update from versions 24H2 or 25H2 on existing devices. That is specific to 26H1, not a general rule for every Windows feature update. Check the relevant Windows 11 version 26H1 information and 26H2 update history for current release details.

If Windows says the device is managed by an organization, ask your work or school administrator about update timing. Organization policies can control which updates are offered; do not try to bypass them.

If the feature update was offered but failed

Use the error message or code shown in Windows Update to choose the next step. Avoid applying fixes for a different error: causes and remedies vary, including insufficient storage, update database problems, access issues, and system-file problems.

Can you install a feature update manually?

If the feature update has not arrived and the device is eligible, Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant can manually install the latest compatible feature update rather than waiting for automatic rollout. It supports x86/64 devices, but it does not run on ARM-based PCs. Do not use it to override an apparent compatibility hold; check the hold or eligibility information first.

If the PC is still running Windows 10

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on that date. This lifecycle change does not by itself explain why a particular installation failed. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant and lifecycle information for applicable upgrade details.
