In Windows 11, update controls are under Start > Settings > Windows Update; antivirus, firewall, and device-protection controls are in the Windows Security app. You can pause updates temporarily and choose when Windows is less likely to restart, but pausing does not permanently disable updates. This guide explains the practical settings and the risks of changing them.

Manage updates in Windows 11

Open Start > Settings > Windows Update to see update status. Select Check for updates to look manually. Windows normally downloads and installs updates automatically, and some updates require a restart to finish.

Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the available controls.

Pause updates temporarily

In Windows Update, use the pause control to choose when updates should resume. Microsoft documents a maximum pause of 35 days for the current Windows 11 experience. A pause is not a permanent way to turn off updates: when it ends, Windows checks for available updates, which may then download and install.

Reduce disruptive restarts with Active hours

Go to Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. You can let Windows adjust active hours automatically or set them yourself. Windows tries to restart outside those hours where possible, helping avoid interruptions during normal use.

Choose how soon to receive optional updates

The Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available setting affects how quickly optional non-security updates, fixes, and features are offered. Microsoft says regular security updates continue whether the setting is on or off. Rollouts can be gradual; opting in may bring new changes sooner and can mean more restarts. See Microsoft’s guidance on getting updates sooner.

Setting What it means
On Optional non-security features and fixes may be offered sooner; rollout timing is not guaranteed.
Off Optional non-security updates may arrive later; regular security updates still continue.

Find and understand Windows Security

Open Start and search for Windows Security. The app brings together several protection areas, though the controls shown can vary with device hardware, installed security providers, and work or school policies. Microsoft describes the app in its Windows Security overview and settings guidance.

The app can also show which security provider is active. If another antivirus product is installed, Defender controls may not appear in the same way on every PC.

Use antivirus protection safely

In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, you can review current threats and protection history, run a quick, full, custom, or Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and manage available Defender settings. Microsoft’s virus and threat protection guide describes these options.

Do not leave real-time protection off

Real-time protection checks files as they are opened or downloaded. If you turn it off, those files are not scanned in real time while it remains off. Microsoft says temporary deactivation turns back on automatically, but that is not a reason to disable it routinely.

Use an exclusion only for a specific trusted item

If a trusted file or folder is being incorrectly flagged, an exclusion can be narrower than disabling all antivirus protection. An excluded item will not receive the same Defender scanning, so add one only when you understand and trust it. Avoid broad exclusions that cover downloads or other locations where untrusted files may land.

Keep security intelligence current

Windows downloads security intelligence updates through Windows Update. These updates provide threat information Defender uses when scanning. To check manually, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and use the protection updates control to check for updates. Microsoft’s protection guidance covers these updates.

Choose the right firewall network profile

Windows Firewall distinguishes domain, private, and public network profiles. A home network may be appropriate for a private profile if you trust the other devices on it. Public Wi-Fi is generally a public-profile situation because you may not trust nearby devices. The profile affects how discoverable the PC is and what network traffic is allowed.

In Windows Security > Firewall & network protection, select a profile to review its status and settings. If the firewall blocks an app you need, Microsoft recommends allowing that specific app rather than turning off the firewall. Allowing an app is generally safer than opening a port, which can leave a path open for network traffic. See Microsoft’s firewall and network protection guidance.

Profile When it fits Decision to make
Private A network such as a home network where you trust the other devices. Whether those devices should be able to discover or connect to your PC.
Public Public Wi-Fi or another network where you do not trust other devices. Keep the PC less discoverable and limit unwanted connections.
Domain A network managed by an organization. Use the organization’s policy; an administrator may control the profile and firewall settings.

Check TPM and Secure Boot status

Open Windows Security > Device security to see security features available on your PC, including information about the security processor (TPM) and Secure Boot when supported. If the TPM entry is missing, the hardware may not be present or TPM may be disabled in UEFI firmware. Check the device maker’s instructions before changing firmware settings; changing them casually can affect how the device starts or protects data. Microsoft explains these features in its Device Security guide.

What changes on work or school devices?

An organization can manage Windows Security and update settings, so some controls may be unavailable or set by policy. If a setting is greyed out or changes back, contact the organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass its policy. Microsoft notes that security settings may be managed by an administrator in its Windows Security settings information.
