To clear Windows’ cached thumbnail previews, use Disk Cleanup and select Thumbnails for the drive you want to clean. Microsoft documents this built-in option, but its guidance does not establish that Windows keeps thumbnails of every deleted photo for years. Clearing the selected cache is a practical privacy step—not a guarantee that every copy or trace is erased.
Clear the thumbnail cache with Disk Cleanup
Microsoft’s free-space instructions list Thumbnails as a file type you can select in Disk Cleanup. Use these steps:
- Search Windows for Disk Cleanup and open it.
- Select the drive you want to clean, then choose OK.
- In the file-type list, check Thumbnails. Leave other categories unchecked unless you also intend to remove them.
- Choose OK, then confirm with Delete files.
Windows labels or screen layouts can vary by version and update. The key is to select the drive and the Thumbnails category before confirming.

What clearing thumbnails does—and does not establish
This procedure removes the selected thumbnail-cache files. A thumbnail is a preview, not the original photo. Microsoft’s instructions do not explain whether an original deleted photo can be recovered, how long any particular thumbnail remains on a device, or whether deletion meets forensic-erasure standards.

Nor does clearing this cache establish that copies or related data have been removed from backups, cloud services, or other applications. Treat it as cleanup of the selected Windows cache, not a universal deletion method.
Why Storage Sense is not the documented thumbnail-cache control
Storage Sense can automatically manage certain temporary files and Recycle Bin contents according to its settings. Microsoft describes it as a general storage-maintenance feature, but does not identify it as the specific thumbnail-cache control in its Storage Sense guidance. For directly documented thumbnail cleanup, use Disk Cleanup.

Windows’ Storage settings also provide storage categories and cleanup recommendations, but Microsoft’s Storage settings guidance does not identify a separate thumbnail-privacy remedy there.
