A Windows shortcut and a symbolic link both provide another way to reach something, but they operate at different layers. A shortcut is a separate .lnk file interpreted by the Windows Shell; it behaves like a launcher and can carry options such as arguments, a working directory, an icon, and a keyboard shortcut. A symbolic link is a file-system entry that redirects path resolution, so an application opening that path is sent to the link’s target.

Use a shortcut when a person should activate a target from Explorer, the desktop, Start, or another Shell workflow. Use a symbolic link when software or a workflow needs an alternate file or directory path. The distinction also explains why a shortcut is not a substitute for a directory link, and why a symbolic link is not simply a shortcut with a different icon.

The difference at a glance

Question Shell shortcut (.lnk) Symbolic link
What kind of object is it? A separate binary link file interpreted by the Windows Shell. A file-system link resolved while Windows processes a path.
What happens when it is used? The Shell reads the link and launches or opens the recorded target. The link’s path component is replaced with its target, then the rest of the requested path is resolved.
Best fit A human-facing launcher on the desktop, in Explorer, or in another Shell location. An alternate path that applications can open directly.
Launch metadata Can store a working directory, arguments, initial display state, icon, description, and keyboard shortcut. The Microsoft documentation describes target-path behavior, not equivalent launcher metadata.
Typical creation method The Windows Shell’s Create Shortcut function or Shell link interfaces. The mklink command or the CreateSymbolicLink API.
File extension Normally .lnk. No required shortcut-style extension; it occupies a file or directory path.
Deletion effect Removing the .lnk removes the launcher file, not the recorded target. Removing the link entry is separate from removing its target; verify the exact path and command before deleting anything.

Microsoft documents the Shell-link model in its Win32 links documentation and symbolic-link behavior in Creating Symbolic Links.

What a Windows shortcut actually is

A separate Shell object

A shortcut is a binary .lnk file. The Windows Shell reads that file when a user activates it, then uses the information stored inside to locate and launch the target. The target is not contained inside the shortcut; the shortcut is a separate file that records where the target is and how the Shell should start it.

That separation is why copying a shortcut does not copy the application, document, or folder it points to. It also means that deleting the shortcut file does not delete the target object. The target can remain in its original location while the launcher is removed or replaced.

Metadata a shortcut can carry

Shell links can contain more than a target path. Microsoft lists these kinds of launch information:

  • Target location: the file, folder, or program to open.
  • Working directory: the directory used as the process’s starting location.
  • Arguments: command-line text supplied when the target is launched.
  • Initial display state: how the launched window should initially appear.
  • Icon: the icon displayed for the shortcut.
  • Description: explanatory text associated with the link.
  • Keyboard shortcut: a Shell-level key combination associated with activation.

These fields make a shortcut useful when the goal is to launch something in a particular way. For example, two shortcuts can point to the same executable but pass different arguments or use different working directories. That is a launcher decision, not a file-system path decision.

How a shortcut is used

The Shell is the component that interprets a shortcut. A person activates the .lnk from a desktop, Explorer view, Start-related location, or another Shell workflow; the Shell reads its recorded data and performs the launch or open operation. A program that simply receives a path does not automatically receive the shortcut’s launch metadata. If an application needs a real path to a file or directory, a symbolic link is usually the relevant object instead.

What a symbolic link actually is

A path resolved by the file system

A symbolic link is created through a file-system API or command. Windows treats it as part of path resolution. When an application opens a path containing a symbolic-link component, Windows substitutes that component with the link target and continues resolving the remainder of the path.

Suppose C:WorkAlias is a symbolic link to D:SharedReports. An application opening C:WorkAliasJanuary.xlsx is directed to the target path with the remaining component appended: D:SharedReportsJanuary.xlsx. The application is using a path; it is not asking the Shell to launch a .lnk file.

Absolute and relative targets

Microsoft’s CreateSymbolicLink documentation supports both absolute and relative symbolic-link targets. A relative target can use . and .. components. Relative symbolic links are restricted to a single volume, so a relative link cannot be used as a way to span from one volume to another.

The API documentation also describes UNC paths for remote targets. A symbolic link can therefore refer to a network location expressed as a UNC path when the surrounding application and permissions support access to that location. A current-working-directory-relative input form is created as an absolute link, so the way a relative-looking target is supplied matters when designing scripts or tools.

What a symbolic link does not provide

The cited Microsoft documentation explains symbolic links in terms of target paths and path substitution. It does not describe a symbolic link as carrying shortcut-style fields for arguments, icons, descriptions, window state, or keyboard activation. If those launch controls are required, put them in a Shell shortcut or in the application’s own launcher configuration rather than expecting the symlink to supply them.

How path handling differs in practice

Opening a shortcut versus opening a symlink path

With a shortcut, the Shell first identifies the .lnk file and interprets its recorded launch data. The Shell may pass arguments, set the working directory, choose a display state, and show the configured icon. The link file is visible as an object in its own right.

With a symbolic link, path resolution is the important operation. An application can be given a path such as C:DataCurrent; if Current is a symlink, Windows redirects that component to its target while resolving the path. The application does not need to launch a shortcut file for this to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why this distinction affects software

Programs that accept a file or directory path can often use a symlink because the path resolver performs the redirection before the program accesses the target. A program designed specifically to activate Shell shortcuts may instead expect a .lnk file. Behavior is application-specific: the Microsoft pages establish the Windows object models, not a guarantee that every third-party application treats every link type identically.

Choosing the right object

Choose a shortcut when a person needs a launcher

  • You want a desktop, Explorer, or Start-facing entry that someone activates.
  • The target needs command-line arguments each time it is launched.
  • The target must start with a particular working directory.
  • You want to control the initial display state or show a custom icon and description.
  • You need a keyboard shortcut associated with the launcher.

A shortcut is also the clearer choice when the target is an application and the user should see a recognizable launcher rather than an alternate directory path.

Choose a symbolic link when software needs another path

  • An application or script must open a file or directory through a different path.
  • You want a stable path such as C:AppDataCurrent while changing which real directory it targets.
  • A workflow must expose a target under a directory hierarchy without creating a duplicate copy.
  • The consumer works with normal file-system paths rather than Shell launchers.

A symlink is the path-level tool. It does not add the launcher controls available in a .lnk file.

For a directory, decide between a directory symlink and a junction

Windows has more than one directory-link type. The mklink command uses /d for a directory symbolic link and /j for a directory junction. Both are directory links, but they are distinct file-system objects. Do not label either one a .lnk shortcut, and do not choose between them merely because both appear to redirect a folder.

Do not call a hard link a symbolic link

The /h switch creates a hard link for a file. Microsoft documents hard links and junctions separately from symbolic links in its Hard Links and Junctions documentation. A hard link is therefore another option with different semantics, not another name for a symbolic link.

Creating a Windows shortcut

The Windows Shell provides a Create Shortcut operation, and developers can create Shell links through Shell link interfaces. The exact presentation can vary by Windows Shell surface, but the operation follows this model:

  1. Select the file, folder, or application that should be launched.
  2. Invoke the Shell’s Create Shortcut function and choose the location and name for the new .lnk file.
  3. Open the shortcut’s configuration when you need to set launch details such as the working directory, arguments, display state, icon, description, or keyboard shortcut.
  4. Activate the new .lnk to confirm that the Shell reaches the intended target with the intended options.

The resulting shortcut is independent from the target. Moving or deleting the .lnk changes the launcher, not the target file or directory it records.

Creating symbolic links with mklink

Command syntax

Microsoft documents this syntax for the Windows mklink command:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
mklink [[/d] | [/h] | [/j]] <link> <target>

The first path is the new link entry. The second path is the object the link should reference. Quote paths that contain spaces.

Form Object created Use it for
mklink <link> <target> A file symbolic link. Giving a file another file-system path.
mklink /d <link> <target> A directory symbolic link. Giving a directory another path.
mklink /h <link> <target> A hard link. Creating a hard link for a file when that is specifically required.
mklink /j <link> <target> A directory junction. Creating a junction rather than a directory symbolic link.

The Microsoft mklink reference lists applicability for Windows 10, Windows 11, and multiple Windows Server versions. Check that page for the current support list when a script must target a specific Windows release.

File symbolic-link example

This command creates a symbolic link named notes.txt under C:Links that points to a file on drive D::

mklink "C:Linksnotes.txt" "D:Datanotes.txt"

Applications that open C:Linksnotes.txt are directed through the link to D:Datanotes.txt. The command creates a file symbolic link because no switch was supplied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Directory symbolic-link example

Use /d when the link entry should represent a directory:

mklink /d "C:ProjectsCurrent" "D:ProjectsRelease-2026"

A program using C:ProjectsCurrentbuild.log resolves the Current component to the target directory and then appends build.log.

Junction and hard-link examples

These commands create different objects, even though each uses the same command family:

mklink /j "C:CacheActive" "D:CacheActive"
mklink /h "C:Reportslatest.txt" "C:Reports2026-10-17.txt"

The first command creates a directory junction; the second creates a hard link for a file. Neither should be described as a Shell shortcut, and the second is not a symbolic link.

  • Absolute targets: the target contains a complete path.
  • Relative targets: the target can use . and .., but relative symbolic links are restricted to one volume.
  • UNC targets: a remote file or directory can be addressed with a UNC path.
  • Current-working-directory-relative input: an input supplied in that form is created as an absolute link.

These rules matter when generating links programmatically. A script that moves a link between volumes, or assumes that every relative-looking input remains relative, can produce a result different from what its author intended. Design the target path deliberately and document whether it is absolute, relative, local, or UNC.

Removing links without removing the wrong thing

Removing a shortcut

A .lnk is a separate file. Removing that file removes the Shell launcher while leaving the recorded target in place. Before deleting it, verify that you are selecting the shortcut and not the target shown elsewhere in the same folder.

Removing a symbolic link

A symbolic link is a file-system entry at the link path. Removing the link entry is a different operation from removing the target, but deletion commands act on paths, so confirm the exact link path and command before proceeding. Do not infer the result from the icon or name alone, and do not assume that deleting a path is harmless merely because it was intended to be a link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a link appears broken

  • Check whether the target was moved or renamed.
  • For a relative link, verify that the target remains on the same volume and that the relative path is still correct.
  • For a UNC target, verify that the remote path is reachable in the current environment.
  • For a shortcut, inspect its recorded target, working directory, and arguments; a bad launch setting can make a valid target appear unusable.
  • Confirm that the application supports the link type you supplied. Shell shortcuts and file-system symlinks are not interchangeable inputs.

Common mistakes and better fixes

Putting a shortcut where an application expects a folder

A shortcut is a launcher file, not a directory path. If software is configured to open C:DataCurrent, placing a .lnk in that location does not turn the path into a directory. Create a directory symbolic link with mklink /d or use a junction with mklink /j, depending on the object you require.

Using a symlink when launch arguments are required

A symlink redirects the path; it does not supply the shortcut metadata used to pass arguments or set a working directory. Keep the symlink for path compatibility and create a separate Shell shortcut when a person must launch the program with those options.

Confusing /d, /j, and /h

The switches encode different object types. Use /d for a directory symbolic link, /j for a directory junction, and /h for a file hard link. Omitting the switch creates a file symbolic link. Choosing the switch based only on the word “link” can produce the wrong object for the application or workflow.

Assuming every program treats links identically

The Windows path resolver and Shell have defined behaviors, but an application can impose its own checks. Test the exact program, script, or service that will consume the path, especially when the target is remote or the link is relative. Do not generalize one application’s behavior to all software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Ask whether a person is activating a launcher or whether software is opening a path.
  2. If it is a launcher, use a Shell shortcut and configure its target, arguments, working directory, display state, icon, description, or keyboard shortcut as needed.
  3. If it is a path, use a symbolic link and select a file link, directory symbolic link, or another link type deliberately.
  4. For a directory, choose between /d and /j; do not call either one a .lnk.
  5. Choose absolute or relative target syntax with the volume restriction in mind, and use UNC syntax when the target is remote.
  6. Before removing anything, identify whether the selected path is the link entry or the target.
  7. Validate the result with the actual application that will consume it, because support can vary by program.

The shortest reliable rule is: a shortcut tells the Windows Shell how to launch something, while a symbolic link tells Windows path resolution where a path should lead. Select the object according to that layer, and the differences in metadata, commands, directory behavior, and deletion become predictable.
