Storage Sense is Windows’ built-in tool for automatically clearing selected temporary files and managing drive space. Microsoft says it is off by default, but enabling it does not give Windows permission to delete everything: its default cleanup is limited, and you choose its schedule and categories in Settings.
What Storage Sense does—and what it does not do
Storage Sense can automatically clear unnecessary temporary files on the Windows system drive. With its default settings, it runs when that drive is low on space; it can also remove items from the Recycle Bin after the retention period you set. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance says Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you opt into those rules.
Storage Sense works on the system drive only. To inspect or manage other drives, use the separate storage settings for those drives. It also does not promise a fixed amount of reclaimed space or a performance improvement; the result depends on what eligible files are present.

Turn on Storage Sense
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Switch Storage Sense to On.
- Select Storage Sense to review its run schedule and cleanup preferences. Labels may vary slightly between Windows versions.
Microsoft says Windows may turn Storage Sense on to manage selected temporary files if the PC is low on disk space and you have not previously interacted with the feature; Windows notifies you if it does. You can review its settings there rather than assume every cleanup category is enabled.

Choose what it can clean
Set the run frequency and decide whether Storage Sense should clean the Recycle Bin, Downloads, or eligible cloud files. The cleanup categories have different consequences:
- Temporary files: With the default behavior, Storage Sense clears unnecessary temporary files when the system drive is low on space.
- Recycle Bin: Items can be removed after the retention period you choose. Do not rely on the Recycle Bin as long-term storage for files you may need.
- Downloads: This is not managed unless you enable the rule. If enabled, files not opened for the selected interval can be removed. Check the folder before opting in, especially if you keep installers, documents, or other files there.
Understand the cloud-file option
For supported cloud content, Storage Sense can remove the locally stored copy of an inactive file to free space while leaving the file in the cloud. This is not the same as permanently deleting the cloud file. Microsoft says the content can be made locally available again when there is free space and a network connection; choosing Always keep on this device exempts a file from being made online-only by this rule.

In Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft documents a default inactivity period of 30 days for this cloud setting. That figure applies to the documented version and setting, not every Windows release or every cloud-storage configuration.

When automatic cleanup runs
Turning Storage Sense on does not mean it runs continuously. Microsoft says it cannot run unless you are signed in and online for more than 10 minutes. The default cleanup trigger is low space on the system drive; the schedule and category rules you select determine other cleanup behavior.
