Use both, but for different jobs. Windows’ built-in NVMe health view is the fastest standardized warning system, while the SSD maker’s utility can expose model-specific SMART attributes and supported diagnostics. A Windows critical warning deserves immediate backup and follow-up; a clean status is not a universal guarantee, especially for SATA drives and failure modes that are not represented in the reported log.

Do not confuse Windows Security’s broad “Device performance & health” page with the detailed disk-health fields in Storage settings. The former reports general device maintenance; the latter is where supported NVMe health information appears.

Windows Security: Device performance & health

Open Windows Security > Device performance & health for a broad maintenance report. Microsoft says it checks storage capacity, battery life, apps and software, and the Windows Time service. It is not a detailed SMART dashboard and does not expose every SSD attribute.

A managed computer can have this page blocked by policy. Its absence is therefore not proof that a disk is healthy or failing; it may simply be an administrative restriction.

Storage settings: the drive-health details

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes, select the disk, choose Properties, and look for the health information. Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance uses the label Manage disks and volumes.

This documented health view is for NVM (NVMe) SSDs. Microsoft does not describe the same monitoring coverage for SATA SSDs or hard drives. If a SATA drive has no equivalent panel, that is a coverage limitation—not a clean bill of health.

What Windows’ NVMe values actually tell you

The underlying NVMe SMART/Health Information Log is a standardized set of fields. Windows can display some of these values in its user interface, while advanced tools may show the complete log.

Field What it represents How to act on it
Critical warning Flags conditions such as low available spare capacity, degraded reliability, or a drive that has entered read-only status. Treat any active warning as an urgent backup and support issue.
Available spare A normalized percentage of the drive’s remaining spare capacity. Compare it with the drive’s reported available-spare threshold; a warning means the reserve has fallen to a critical level.
Percentage used A vendor-specific estimate based on actual use and the manufacturer’s prediction of NVM endurance. Use it as a wear estimate, not as a countdown to a guaranteed failure.
Composite temperature The device temperature reported by the NVMe health log. Raw log values use Kelvin; the Windows support interface presents its health temperature attribute in degrees Celsius. Compare readings consistently and investigate sustained abnormal heat using the drive maker’s guidance.
Data read and data written Cumulative host read and write activity reported by the drive. Use it to understand workload and wear context, not to infer a precise remaining lifespan.
Power-on hours Accumulated time the drive has been powered. Useful context when reviewing an older drive or a second-hand system.
Unsafe shutdowns Count of power losses or shutdowns that did not follow the normal shutdown path. Repeated increases can point to power or operating-system problems worth correcting.
Media errors Errors reported while reading or writing the nonvolatile media. Increasing media errors strengthen the case for backup, diagnostics, and replacement planning.
Error-log entries Number of entries recorded in the NVMe error information log. Review the associated details with a tool that can display the drive’s full log; the count alone does not identify the root cause.

Why “Percentage used” is easy to misread

Microsoft explicitly cautions that the value is an estimate. Its documentation states: “A value of 100 indicates that the estimated endurance of the NVM in the NVM subsystem has been consumed, but may not indicate an NVM subsystem failure.” The field can also exceed 100.

That means 100 percent is not equivalent to “the SSD has failed” and it does not establish an exact number of days or terabytes remaining. Combine it with critical-warning bits, media errors, symptoms, and supported tests before deciding that the drive must be replaced.

What the critical-warning categories mean

  • Low spare capacity: the reserve used to replace worn or unusable media has reached the drive’s warning threshold.
  • Degraded reliability: Microsoft describes this as significant media-related errors or an internal NVM-subsystem error.
  • Read-only status: the device has placed itself in a mode that prevents normal writes, a condition that can make the operating system or applications unstable even if existing data remains readable.

Windows may phrase the alert as “critical warning for a storage device” or “Reliability is degraded.” These are actionable states, not cosmetic labels.

What an SSD manufacturer’s utility can add

A maker’s utility reads the same standard health information when the drive exposes it, but it may also understand attributes and commands specific to that model. It can therefore answer questions Windows’ general interface does not.

More complete SMART views

Manufacturer software commonly displays raw and normalized SMART attributes, firmware information, temperature history, and drive identity. Seagate’s SeaTools SSD guide, for example, documents SMART views for both SATA and NVMe drives and an option to export values to CSV. That documentation is evidence for the features it describes on supported drives; it does not establish that every function works with every non-Seagate SSD.

Short and extended diagnostic tests

The reviewed WD SSD Dashboard manual documents automatic SMART retrieval when a drive is selected, along with short and extended SMART diagnostic tests. It also warns that those tests are unsupported for WD-branded NVMe SSDs when certain Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver versions are in use.

This limitation illustrates why a missing test button is not automatically a failed drive. The SSD model, controller path, storage driver, and utility version can determine whether a test is available. Check the exact model’s current support documentation before interpreting an unavailable test as evidence of damage.

Vendor-specific commands

Microsoft documents APIs for reading standard NVMe log pages, including SMART/health data, and a separate pass-through mechanism for vendor-specific NVMe commands. A manufacturer utility may use those vendor-specific functions for firmware management or diagnostics. That distinction shows why the tools can provide different information, but it does not prove that a branded utility is always more accurate than Windows.

What to trust when the results disagree

There is no defensible rule that one screen is always right. Use a priority order based on the seriousness of the condition and the coverage of each tool.

  1. Act on a Windows critical warning first. Copy important files to a separate, verified destination and contact the computer or drive manufacturer. Microsoft advises backing up data and seeking support when a critical storage warning appears.
  2. Do not treat a clean Windows reading as an all-clear. The documented Windows view covers NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or hard drives, and it reports only the health attributes the device exposes. It is not a guarantee against every controller, firmware, electrical, or sudden-death failure.
  3. Identify the exact drive model and consult its supported utility. Use the model number shown in Windows or the utility itself, then read the maker’s documentation for compatible interfaces, drivers, controllers, and tests.
  4. Interpret endurance estimates alongside symptoms. A 100-or-higher Percentage Used value without critical warnings is a wear signal. Frequent crashes, disappearing volumes, rising media errors, or a failed supported diagnostic make the situation more urgent.
  5. Use the vendor’s official firmware source. Microsoft advises obtaining firmware directly from the OEM, solution vendor, or drive vendor and notes that Windows cannot verify the integrity of a firmware image. Do not rely on third-party firmware download sites.

A practical checking workflow

1. Establish the drive and interface

Record the manufacturer, full model number, capacity, and whether the device is NVMe or SATA. A SATA label changes the decision immediately: the documented Windows NVMe health panel may not appear, so use the drive maker’s supported utility or another documented SMART reader instead.

2. Check the correct Windows location

On Windows 11, use Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes > Properties. On Windows 10, follow the equivalent Manage disks and volumes path. Separately, you can open Windows Security’s Device performance & health page for broad system checks, but do not substitute it for disk-specific information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Record warnings and counters before changing anything

Write down the critical-warning state, available spare and threshold, Percentage Used, temperature, media errors, unsafe shutdowns, power-on hours, and error-log count. A dated record makes it possible to tell whether a counter is changing rather than relying on a single snapshot.

4. Install only the drive maker’s current utility

Match the utility to the exact model and operating environment. Confirm that the drive is visible through its current controller and driver path. If the software reports that a test is unsupported, read the manufacturer’s compatibility notes before trying workarounds.

5. Run only supported diagnostics

Use a documented short test for a quick check and an extended test when the maker supports it and the data is backed up. A pass means the drive completed that particular test under those conditions; it does not certify every future failure mode. A failed test, repeated error, or inability to remain detected should move the drive into backup-and-support handling.

6. Decide on monitoring, support, or replacement

  • Monitor: no critical warning, stable counters, normal behavior, and no failed supported test.
  • Back up and contact support: any critical warning, degraded reliability, read-only state, or increasing media errors.
  • Plan replacement after confirmation: a failed supported diagnostic or persistent symptoms after backup. Match a replacement’s interface, form factor, capacity, and system compatibility; the available evidence does not identify a universal model or price.

Common result combinations and the appropriate response

Windows result Manufacturer utility result Reasonable response
Critical warning for low spare capacity SMART appears readable or a short test passes Back up immediately and seek support. A passing short test does not cancel the warning.
“Reliability is degraded” or read-only status Any result Prioritize data recovery and support; avoid treating the drive as suitable for continued primary use.
No Windows warning on an NVMe drive Model-specific SMART errors or a failed supported test Follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic result and support process; Windows’ clean summary is not a veto.
Percentage Used at 100 or above No critical warning and no failed test Treat it as an endurance estimate. Keep a current backup, watch for changing errors or symptoms, and use the maker’s guidance for replacement timing.
No Windows health panel for a SATA SSD SMART data available in the maker’s utility Use the SATA-compatible utility and interpret its attributes according to the model documentation.
Manufacturer test unavailable WD-branded NVMe drive behind a documented incompatible Intel RST driver path Check the vendor’s driver and support guidance rather than concluding that the SSD has failed.

Why neither tool can promise a failure date

SMART and NVMe health fields are indicators, not warranties. They describe what the controller has reported: wear estimates, reserve capacity, errors, temperature, and operating history. A controller, firmware, power, connector, or sudden electronic failure can occur without a convenient warning, while a worn estimate can remain usable beyond the point at which it reaches 100.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, “healthy” should mean “no current warning in the covered fields and no concerning behavior,” not “data is safe without backups.” The most reliable protection remains an independent backup that has been tested by restoring files.

Firmware and driver decisions

Storage utilities operate through a hardware and software path: SSD, motherboard or adapter, controller mode, operating-system driver, and utility. A change in that path can expose or hide commands. Intel RST, for example, is specifically identified in the WD manual as a condition that can make certain NVMe diagnostics unsupported.

Before a firmware update, read the exact drive’s release notes and backup instructions. Obtain the image from the relevant OEM, solution vendor, or drive vendor. Windows’ API support for standard NVMe logs does not mean Windows can validate a vendor firmware image or guarantee that a third-party utility is safe for the device.

How to handle a drive that is becoming unstable

If the volume is still readable, copy irreplaceable documents, photos, and project files before experimenting with utilities or firmware. Use a separate destination and verify that important files open from the backup. A cloud sync folder alone should not be assumed to be an independent, restorable backup unless its recovery process has been tested.

When a drive repeatedly disappears, switches to read-only, or reports degraded reliability, limit unnecessary writes and avoid treating a diagnostic pass as permission to return it to primary duty. Preserve the model number, warning text, counter values, and utility version for the support case. Those details help the vendor distinguish a health-log warning from a controller, driver, or connection problem.

What the tools can and cannot cover

Windows’ standardized view is strongest when the storage device is an NVMe SSD that exposes the documented health log through a supported controller and driver. The maker’s software can broaden visibility to SATA devices, expose vendor-defined attributes, export records, or run short and extended tests, but only where that model and path are supported.

Neither interface should be scored as the universal winner. Compare them on five practical axes: interface coverage, information type, test capability, driver and controller compatibility, and the action justified by the result. A green label generally supports monitoring; a critical warning, failed supported test, or worsening symptom supports backup and support; replacement follows confirmation and compatibility checking.

Bottom line: use a layered answer, not a winner

Windows is the right first alert for supported NVMe health warnings because it presents standardized fields and clear critical-warning states. The manufacturer’s utility is the right second layer for model-specific SMART detail, firmware information, and supported short or extended diagnostics. When they disagree, protect the data first, verify model and driver compatibility, and let documented warnings and repeatable diagnostics—not a single green label—drive the decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a missing Windows drive-health panel mean my SSD is healthy?

No. Microsoft’s documented panel covers NVM/NVMe SSDs, not SATA SSDs or hard drives. A missing panel can simply reflect interface coverage, device support, or policy. Identify the interface and use the manufacturer’s supported SMART utility for SATA drives.

Should I replace an NVMe SSD when Percentage Used reaches 100%?

Not automatically. Microsoft defines 100 as consumed estimated endurance and says it may not indicate subsystem failure; the value can exceed 100. Keep a current backup and consider critical warnings, media errors, symptoms, and supported diagnostics before replacement.

Which result matters more: a Windows warning or a manufacturer test that passes?

Treat a Windows critical warning as actionable even if a short manufacturer test passes. Back up and contact support. A short test covers only that test’s conditions and does not cancel a low-spare, degraded-reliability, or read-only warning.

Why is a manufacturer diagnostic unavailable?

Availability depends on the exact SSD, controller, storage driver, and utility version. The WD SSD Dashboard manual, for example, documents unsupported tests for certain WD NVMe drives using specified Intel RST driver paths. Check compatibility notes before treating the missing test as failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows read every SSD’s SMART data?

No. Windows exposes documented standard NVMe health information in supported paths, while manufacturer utilities may add model-specific attributes and commands. Coverage differs by interface and hardware path, so a clean Windows summary is not a universal guarantee.

Where should I obtain SSD firmware?

Use the relevant computer OEM, solution vendor, or SSD manufacturer. Microsoft notes that Windows cannot verify a firmware image’s integrity. Avoid third-party download sites, and back up data before following the model’s update instructions.

The Bottom Line

Trust the warning, not the color. Use Windows’ NVMe health fields for standardized alerts, then use the exact SSD maker’s utility for model-specific SMART details and supported diagnostics. Back up immediately for critical warnings, degraded reliability, read-only status, rising errors, or serious symptoms; treat clean readings and endurance estimates as monitoring information, never as a backup substitute.
